Should http traffic be blocked to enable non transparent proxy?

Q. Hello everyone,
I would like to know if HTTP traffic should be blocked on Linux based firewalls to enable non transparent proxy (ie automatic redirection to a login page when a user tries to open any webpage).

P.S:The firewall I'm using is ENDIAN firewall.

A. I think you're more interested in port forwarding than blocking in this case.

Say if I've got squid running on my firewall box and it's accepting connections on port 8080, Web browsers are still going to send requests off to port 80 for HTTP and port 443 for HTTPS requests. It's just the way they work (unless you override it with the :portno at the end of the domain name).

It's the firewalls job to redirect port 80 requests to port 8080 where the proxy is listening and then the proxy can handle the request on behalf of all the hosts you've got on your LAN.

How to connect to fedora server 2.0 from win xp using puTTY?
Q. i have a fedora 2.0 server and i want to connect it from my windows xp. i can connect to another linux firewall on same network but i cant accces the fedora 2.0 server why? i use puTTY 0.60. plz help

A. What happens when you try? There are lots of different possibilities, but without knowing what goes wrong, it's hard to say.

1) An SSH server might not be running.

2) The server might only accept SSH1 connections and you might be attempting an SSH2 server with puTTY.

3) The SSH server might be running, but a firewall or TCP connection rule may be disallowing your connection.

How is Windows Antifirewall System Is Different From Linux Firewall System ?

A. im sorry to answer this way. but i don't think windows firewall do nothing at all ...i don't use linux so the Other i don't know. but one thing is for certain the comodo firewall is the best and it is free just give it a try.

What is the best software firewall and why?
Q. What is the best software firewall for home computer users and why? Which offers the most features and doesn't run down computer sources, and which is the most secure?

A. Have you noticed that the people who are always pushing different Browsers and operating systems always claim that any Windows based program(s) are bad.

In the last year of so, the Scumbags that write these programs have been insulted by the Firefox, Opera, Linux, and Mac users. All the bragging they do about being Malware proof has spurred the Scumbags into action.

The only reason these area have not been attacked is simple: Not enough users. The Scumbags get high off the attention their Virus(s) get in the media and the only way to get the attention is to infect the most computers. With approx. 600 million Windows users and approx. 60 million others, the Windows systems have had all the attention. The extensive media coverage of Windows OS's being attacked is a way for the media to try and bring down the big guy.

The Scumbags are now attacking these other browsers and OS's with a vengence. You are not hearing about it in the news media because they don't generate the attention the media want. If you saw a headline in the paper or on the net that said "LINUX OPERATING SYSTEM ATTACKED BY WORM", odds are you would not read it because you don't use Linux and the Worm doesn't affect you. Maybe a few thousand Windows users will read it. Change Linux to Windows and you will now have millions of readers. Since the number of readers equate to higher advertising rates, publishing a story about Linux is like reducing your AD rates.

Back to your question. Windows has a good Firewall built into the SP2. It does have one flaw in that it does not stop a Virus or spyware program from sending information out of your computer. This has been corrected for the Vista OS but not XP as of yet. Many security experts expect Microsoft to address this with XP after the Vista release early next year.

Zone Alarm is an excellent Firewall program that works in both directions (incoming and outgoing). Zone Alarm is free and will provide you as good protection as any brand you purchase. Most of the people you read that say any product like Norton, McAfee, Zone Alarm etc. is worthless or bad, usually have never used it, or, didn't know or understand how to use it properly. You know these kind of people. They make statements like "Zone Alarm is worthless" and then are incapable of providing and facts to back up their claim.

I recommend you read this site. It covers a lot of information on Malware, how it works to attack your computer and programs best suited to deal with each type of malware. It also has a very good area on Firewalls and how they work. This site is well worth the read.

What is the most powerful firewall for a Linux web-server?
Q. A software firewall not a hardware one.

A. Various answers here. Some firewalls (Linux) come with a web server, others just run on separate PC's.
Check out Distrowatch.com for the various firewalls. Some like Endian and ClarkConnect come with web servers embedded. Others like IPCop and Monowall are basic firewalls/routers.

I run my web servers on a dedicated Ubuntu server, with ISPConfig as the admin tool for multiple sites and security.
I then run a separate PC with a Linux firewall on the front end.

Linux Firewall on a home network?

Q. What would be the use of a linux firewall in a home network? Is there any point in making one?

A. The primary purpose would be to learn more about how firewalls, routers and IPTables work. It used to be that it took some big iron to run firewall and router software, "back in the day"
Today, of course, you can buy a $40 home router that does most everything you need

Here are some other reasons to set up a Liniux
1. you want to monitor all traffic in and out of your home network. Using a Linux machine as a router/firewall allows you to tap the Ethernet port with Wireshark and sniff the traffic coming to and from the whole network, not just one machine..
2. You want complete control of what all the machines can do and when they can do it on the network.
Home routers give you some control.
A Linux firewall/router gives you control that only a high priced router can give you.
Bandwidth allocation and limits are not available on low end home routers. Linux would give you the same controls as a full business router costing $500 or more.

But these days - mostly for fun and to learn

Linux users - does the Linux firewall block/make it difficult to watch video or film online?
Q. I am learning about Linux because Im thinking of changing my OS to Linux and trying to find out some pros and cons. I sometimes stream film from sites or watch you tube and Im wondering if Linux will interfere with this.

A. Linux won't really need a firewall. I run a number of Linux machines without any security software and they're fine. Linux is a lot more secure than Windows (Or Mac OS, for that matter), and because it's not used as widely, less viruses are produced for it.

The only issue you might have is that Flash isn't very well supported in Linux - you won't get very good frame rates in full screen, high quality video. Still, if your computer's powerful enough, it should be fine.

Linux is a fantastic platform, which is rapidly becoming more and more user friendly. I urge you to try out Ubuntu, from http://www.ubuntu.com. From there, you can create a Live CD, so you can test Ubuntu without installing it!

If I install Ultra VCN to a linux Os will my machine reboot?

Q. Currently I'm trying to install remote software into a linux platform and I'm planning to used Ultra VNC but i'm running a linux firewall. Will my machine reboot? I'm new to linux.

Linux Firewalls that can connect to a domain?

Q. Hi all (again)

Anybody know of a linux based firewall that has the ability to connect to an active directory domain controller to authenticate users?

I have a Server 2003 Enterprise x64 Domain controller...

Anybody know of a firewall that can do this

PS: Can't afford Smoothwall!

A. First question, why would a firewall (network device) need to authenticate against AD?
If trying to control users in the Firewall with AD , try maybe Radius. There are a few free versions out there.

PS Smoothwall is "free", as most Linux firewalls. What may not be free is add-ons or support...

How can I protect other machines on my Lan using virtual firewall appliance ?

Q. If I have a Windows machine with a virtual linux based firewall appliance inside of it, I know how to protect the host machine with the firewall. How do I protect the other machines on the LAN using the virtual appliance ? Would I only have to set the "Gateway" setting of the other machines to the address of the virtual machine ?

A. Yes, and set their firewalls to block anything not comming from the appliance.

I have activated a port for a office but have internet connection problems?
Q. Recently I have activate a port for a office room and i'm gettting internet connection but if i type something in search it gives me connect to office or offline. I'm currently running a linux firewall do i need to do some setting? or what should i do to fix it?

A. Make sure the port you specifies is not interfering with other services that is using the same port. You can also flush all the port to see which port is having problem. Also make sure your internet daemon is running.

You can always ping your router or any outside network to see if it has internet connection.

How to connect to fedora server 2.0 from win xp using puTTY?

Q. i have a fedora 2.0 server and i want to connect it from my windows xp. i can connect to another linux firewall on same network but i cant accces the fedora 2.0 server why? i use puTTY 0.60. plz help

Do i need networking knoweldge to become linux system administrator?
Q. Hello, i'm currently planning to study linux and get certified if possible, and i'm hoping for a linux system administrator career, i have no experience in sys admin, and i'm wondering if i do need good networking knoweldge (certification) in networking??

A. yes! they go hand in hand. you cannot administer systems if you cannot communicate with other systems on the network. you cannot shield your systems if you don't understand how firewalls, null routes, and routing works to counter ddos. go for RH certifications and LPIC and then CCNA and CCNP. if you have time go for VMWare certification. all companies in one way or another are affected by cloud services or some sort of virtualization. good luck.

Here are some other reasons to set up a Liniux
1. you want to monitor all traffic in and out of your home network. Using a Linux machine as a router/firewall allows you to tap the Ethernet port with Wireshark and sniff the traffic coming to and from the whole network, not just one machine..
2. You want complete control of what all the machines can do and when they can do it on the network.
Home routers give you some control.
A Linux firewall/router gives you control that only a high priced router can give you.
Bandwidth allocation and limits are not available on low end home routers. Linux would give you the same controls as a full business router costing $500 or more.

But these days - mostly for fun and to learn

Linux users - does the Linux firewall block/make it difficult to watch video or film online?

Q. I am learning about Linux because Im thinking of changing my OS to Linux and trying to find out some pros and cons. I sometimes stream film from sites or watch you tube and Im wondering if Linux will interfere with this.

I would like to know if HTTP traffic should be blocked on Linux based firewalls to enable non transparent proxy (ie automatic redirection to a login page when a user tries to open any webpage).

A. I think you're more interested in port forwarding than blocking in this case.

Say if I've got squid running on my firewall box and it's accepting connections on port 8080, Web browsers are still going to send requests off to port 80 for HTTP and port 443 for HTTPS requests. It's just the way they work (unless you override it with the :portno at the end of the domain name).

It's the firewalls job to redirect port 80 requests to port 8080 where the proxy is listening and then the proxy can handle the request on behalf of all the hosts you've got on your LAN.

How is Windows Antifirewall System Is Different From Linux Firewall System ?

A. im sorry to answer this way. but i don't think windows firewall do nothing at all ...i don't use linux so the Other i don't know. but one thing is for certain the comodo firewall is the best and it is free just give it a try.

How can I protect other machines on my Lan using virtual firewall appliance ?

Q. If I have a Windows machine with a virtual linux based firewall appliance inside of it, I know how to protect the host machine with the firewall. How do I protect the other machines on the LAN using the virtual appliance ? Would I only have to set the "Gateway" setting of the other machines to the address of the virtual machine ?

A. Yes, and set their firewalls to block anything not comming from the appliance.

I have activated a port for a office but have internet connection problems?
Q. Recently I have activate a port for a office room and i'm gettting internet connection but if i type something in search it gives me connect to office or offline. I'm currently running a linux firewall do i need to do some setting? or what should i do to fix it?

A. Make sure the port you specifies is not interfering with other services that is using the same port. You can also flush all the port to see which port is having problem. Also make sure your internet daemon is running.

You can always ping your router or any outside network to see if it has internet connection.

A. Have you noticed that the people who are always pushing different Browsers and operating systems always claim that any Windows based program(s) are bad.

In the last year of so, the Scumbags that write these programs have been insulted by the Firefox, Opera, Linux, and Mac users. All the bragging they do about being Malware proof has spurred the Scumbags into action.

The only reason these area have not been attacked is simple: Not enough users. The Scumbags get high off the attention their Virus(s) get in the media and the only way to get the attention is to infect the most computers. If you saw a headline in the paper or on the net that said "LINUX OPERATING SYSTEM ATTACKED BY WORM", odds are you would not read it because you don't use Linux and the Worm doesn't affect you. Maybe a few thousand Windows users will read it. Change Linux to Windows and you will now have millions of readers. Since the number of readers equate to higher advertising rates, publishing a story about Linux is like reducing your AD rates.

Back to your question. Windows has a good Firewall built into the SP2. It does have one flaw in that it does not stop a Virus or spyware program from sending information out of your computer. This has been corrected for the Vista OS but not XP as of yet. Many security experts expect Microsoft to address this with XP after the Vista release early next year.

Zone Alarm is an excellent Firewall program that works in both directions (incoming and outgoing). Zone Alarm is free and will provide you as good protection as any brand you purchase. Most of the people you read that say any product like Norton, McAfee, Zone Alarm etc. is worthless or bad, usually have never used it, or, didn't know or understand how to use it properly. You know these kind of people. They make statements like "Zone Alarm is worthless" and then are incapable of providing and facts to back up their claim.

I recommend you read this site. It covers a lot of information on Malware, how it works to attack your computer and programs best suited to deal with each type of malware. It also has a very good area on Firewalls and how they work. This site is well worth the read.

Linux Firewalls that can connect to a domain?

Q. Hi all (again)

Anybody know of a linux based firewall that has the ability to connect to an active directory domain controller to authenticate users?

I have a Server 2003 Enterprise x64 Domain controller...

Anybody know of a firewall that can do this

PS: Can't afford Smoothwall!

A. First question, why would a firewall (network device) need to authenticate against AD?
If trying to control users in the Firewall with AD , try maybe Radius. There are a few free versions out there.

PS Smoothwall is "free", as most Linux firewalls. What may not be free is add-ons or support...
