A. Is your Ubuntu OS 64-bit?
Because the Steam client is 32-bit.
You didn't list the unresolved dependencies, but I suspect from other users having trouble installing Steam you need the following packages: ia32-libs ia32-libs-gtk ia32-libs-sdl
If you're using Ubuntu 12.10, you'll likely also need this package: libgl1-mesa-glx:i386
That should fix the problem.

What is the best free OS?
Q. I am going to start building a computer. My budget is pretty low and I don't know if I want to spend an extra hundred on hardware, or a OS. I am a little intimidated by linux. I want something that is good for gaming and web browsing. Should I just get windows? I was thinking windows 7 home premium. Or is there something out there that is almost as good for free?
What about ubuntu?

A. If you are looking to get games like Battlefield, CoD, etc. Then you can try your luck with wine.
http://appdb.winehq.org/
Search for the game you like, and see how well it works in wine.
wine is normally only a temporary solution. Really you should look at linux native games, such as UrbanTerror, http://www.urbanterror.info/home/ which uses the quake III engine.
Steam also started their beta in linux, and people have found ways to get steam even without the beta access. If you like some of the source steam games, and even some outliers, then there's a chance it works in linux. There is a compiled list somewhere online.
