How do I switch my Chromebook back to Linux OS?

Q. I recently bought a Acer C7 Chromebook. The only downfall I could see was that it ran on Chrome OS but I had found I could get ChrUbuntu on it and it would run as a fully functional linux laptop. I did this and it worked but since the Chrome OS still lives on in its own dedicated partition it automatically booted into the Chrome OS when I restarted the computer. I would like to know how to run it back in ChrUbuntu. I know it's still on my computer but I don't know how to boot back into it. Thanks in advance!

A. delete the chrome os & reinstall the chrubintu os

How do I connect Windows and Linux?
Q. I have two laptops behind the same router. Both connect to the internet just fine. One is Windows XP Media Center Edition and the other is Ubuntu 6.06. I'm used to using Windows file sharing to share files between Windows laptops. I want to do something similar now between the Windows and Linux laptop. I just care about reliability, speed, and convenience, not security. What are my options and how do I do it?

A. you need to install samba on your linux machine in order for windows to see your linux files.

on linux, you need to mount the windows share using the mount command. you'll need to use type "cifs".

if you can't figure it out, you could always just use IIS WebDAV on windows and Apache WebDAV on Linux. Same concept and it lets you access files just as you normally would but using the HTTP protocol.

What design programs.........Asus Eee PC 8G Linux Laptop?
Q. I LOVE to design, but i am moving with my sister soon and i can't take my old desktop computer that i had when i was living with my mom, so i decided to invest in the Asus Eee PC 8G Linux Laptop(just ordered it online). I was wondering what programs are compatible with this laptop? By the way, i use Photoshop CS3 Extended now. Also if you have any other tips for me about this laptop please leave them!.

A. It runs Xandros Linux. There are tons of programs available for Linux, but you won't be able to use a lot of the programs you use with Windows. Don't worry, there is tons of alternatives that are, in many cases, better

Also, there is a program called Wine, which allows you to run many Windows programs on Linux. I don't think Photoshop CS3 runs yet, but I know Photoshop CS2 runs quite well. Photoshop might take up all the hard drive space on that thing. Check out GIMP for a photoshop alternative, it'll most likely be preinstalled on your laptop

Please suggest me a software that i can install in windows XP inorder to learn LINUX commands?

Q. I want to learn linux commands on windows platform (without the requirement of linux OS). I had a software but i forgot the name, can please help getting that similar kind of functionality.

A. If you want native solution, then Cygwin is the best. It allows you to configure and install only those applications that you want.

Can I get a job if I learn linux for 6 months?
Q. I am planning to learn Linux for 6 months ( about 3H per day). Will I be ab;le to find a job as entry level easly or not? If not what should I learn to make it happen ? Thx.

A. You should be able to if they are hiring. Kind of toiugh in the job market now but things should get better in a couple months.

To learn linux what distro should I use?
Q. I want to become a Mysql DBA therefore I need to learn linux. What distro should i use between: Mandriva 8. Fedora 8 and Unbutu 7.2?
Also I might use a wireless so I don't want any issue and spending days configuring that. I need a user friendly distro to handle my wireless connection & mysql/PHP duties.

A. Considering you will be spending the bulk of your time messing with mysql itself and your linux viewpoint will mostly be a shell command line and an editor, it probably doesn't matter all that much.

Consider that corps almost always play it safe. That means they go with something that provides support. In the US that primarily means Redhat,, Suse, or Ubuntu. Possibly Fedora or Centos.

Check around to see if you wireless card is support. If not, get one that is. Its not like they are a big expense these days.

How do I convert my musical technology on my laptop into hardware?

Q. I have a linux laptop with synthesizers, loopers, etc. The laptop is a pain in the ass and 70% of the time I spend with it is troubleshooting. I was wondering if anybody has or had a setup with a looper, synthesiser, and drum machine that is all hardware. I also need to know where to find these. I am also not quite sure about something else: Would a midi keyboard work with a hardware synthesiser and looper. Much appreciation if this question is answered.

A. There are several stand-alone sequencers like the Yamaha QY series. Also, several beat boxes like Korg's Electribe series will output midi data which allows them to be used as both a source of sounds and a sequencer for other drum machines.

I too do not like using laptops live (although I have.) Too many thing to go wrong. If you do end up using a laptop, keep it simple with only a midi sequencer running (like Cakewalk, Cubase, Sonar, etc.) Once you get softsynths running, you're maximizing CPU and memeory resources and running the risk of a crash.

As far as loopers, there are several stand-alone models like the Boss LoopStation. Synthesizer workstation like the Roland Fantom or Yamaha Motif will also play loops, although those types of keyboards are very expensive.

How do I swith operating systems on my laptop?
Q. My friend gave me an Ubuntu/Linux laptop but on the side of it it says Windows Vista. Does that mean It used to be Windows and if so how can I change it back. Please help, I really hate using Linux, it's a piece of trash.

A. Linux is great if you know what you are doing, and it isn't hard to figure out. If you must, though, then there are two possibilities for getting Windows back on it.

1. Ask if it is dual partitioned. If it is, then when you turn it on, when it is still in the BIOS it will give you an option briefly for which system to load. Select Windows and you will load up no problem.

2. If it not dual partitioned you will have to use a Windows OS disk. Those can be about $100+ unless your friend has one.

If you don't like Ubuntu you can try Linux Mint or some other nice operating system for free. Different versions of Linux run different and you might like another version better. You could also Google "free non linux OS" or something of the sort.


If you post your main problem with Ubuntu under additional details, I will recommend something further.

What is the best way to run Windows and Linux simultaneously on the same machine?

Q. I don't want to run one system inside another using an emulator or similar system.

I want a system that can run both OS's simultaneously and that I can switch between them.

Today I have both systems on my computer, but I need to shut one down to use the other.

A. You are talking about a virtual machine. There are pros and cons with that system.
Pros You can move back and forth between OSes without rebooting.
Cons If you host OS becomes inoperable (e.g. windows gets a serious virus) you will lose both systems, also if your computer does not have enough resources (ram and cpu power) it can run both OSes more slowly.
There are 2 free virtual machine: vmware and virtualbox.
The first link explains how to run linux in a virtual machine in windows.
The second explains how to windows 7 in a virtual machine on Ubuntu.
You should google both vmware and virtualbox to see which might suit you, and google "install windows 7 on virtualbox linux" to get more info and youtube videos.

What is good recording software for linux?
Q. Ive recently started useing ubuntu linux, because it runs better on my computer than windows. Any suggestions for good music recording software? I have An electric keyboard, electric guitar, electric, bass, electric drums, and a sampler (turn tables). Id like something flexible so i can use them all on the same software.

A. Audacity is a the easiest to get jump started and most likely to have drivers for your break out box.

There are several others. If you do a lot of Midi work I suggest Rosegarden. Keyboardists especially tend to favor Rosegarden. I love the interface, full featured but can be picky about which break out boxes it talks too.

Aurdor is another full featured recording software but it's interface is more like Pro Tools while Rosegarden more closely resembles Cakewalk.

Those are the 3 I'd start with. The best way to get them is through your favorite package manager. Synaptic is one of the better ones. Just do a search in synaptic for these packages. They take care of the dependencies for you. Makes installing software on Linux the easiest platform in the world to install software for. Audacity, Rosegarden and Aurdor are all listed in the Multimedia(universe) section in Synaptic. Just check them say yes you want ot install and it's dependencies. Then click on apply when you have selected all the packages you want to install.

You'll also want a good tagger. Easy Tag is solid, I personally prefer Kid3, but there are dozen good ones and Ubuntu comes with Gtag I think it is by default. You should be able to edit ID3 tags through your file browser thought that is a bit tedious.

Installing Lame is a must. If your terrified of a command line you'll also want a Lame front end but to be honest using lame on command line is a no brainer. Open a term window, lame -vbr (name of wave file you want to convert to a mp3) (name you want the MP3 to be)

lame -vbr something.wav something.mp3

This mp3's it using variable bit rate which gives you the best compromise between sound quality and compactness of the output. Most mp3s you download today use lame and it's vbr setting. You get 256k quality where it counts but where there's lots of quiet you get higher compression ratios usually saving a couple megs on the final output without reducing the quality any.

There are dozens of Lame front ends to let you do that without using a command line. Just search synaptic for lame and you'll find them. Audacity, Rosegarden and Audor will plug into Lame and allow you to output MP3s directly as well once you have lame installed. Personally I like to hand rip my stuff, then tag it w/mix & version. Then rename & retag anything I'm sending out to people or the public. Saves listening to 10 copies of the same tune to find that ONE mix you were looking for.

As for sampler software, again there are programs similar to Acid and you can use Rosegarden and Audor though they are not designed for it to do some of it. I don't sample so I can't recommend which are best of breed in that area.

What break out box you have is the trickiest part. I suggest using Maudio or going direct through USB if that's an option. Maudio is decently supported in Linux. Avoid Tascam, nearly impossible to get Linux to talk to a Tascam device.

How would computing look today if Bill Gates and Microsoft did not establish themselves in the world market?
Q. Would the software we use today in general be better e.g. more advanced and faster than it is currently?

A. It would be as good, maybe better. Back in the day there were plenty of good operating systems and software packages competing with Microsoft. Gates bought them, outmanuevered them, or bludgeoned them with brute force marketing muscle.

I used and preferred Novell DOS (aka DrDos, originally from Digital Research) to MS-DOS. It required less memory, ran better, and had more features. SuperCalc, QuattroPro, and even Lotus were far superior to Excel in price, performance, and features.

Even today, I use Openoffice instead of Microsoft Office. I've been using Windows as an operating system only because I haven't had time to investigate Linux alternatives.

How to connect to fedora server 2.0 from win xp using puTTY?

Q. i have a fedora 2.0 server and i want to connect it from my windows xp. i can connect to another linux firewall on same network but i cant accces the fedora 2.0 server why? i use puTTY 0.60. plz help

A. What happens when you try? There are lots of different possibilities, but without knowing what goes wrong, it's hard to say.

1) An SSH server might not be running.

2) The server might only accept SSH1 connections and you might be attempting an SSH2 server with puTTY.

3) The SSH server might be running, but a firewall or TCP connection rule may be disallowing your connection.

How do I setup our proxy server to require a password before users can connect to it to access the internet?
Q. I am using Fedora Core 4 proxy server.

Where can I download linux for mac and how?

Q. I want to download linux for mac and I need a link and I want to know how to do it. Thanks in advance.

A. Download the ISO file, use Apple's Disk Utility to burn it to a start-up DVD.

Is there a way to download linux without a disk drive?
Q. I got this new laptop (ultra portable) without a disk drive. I remember hearing ti was possible to get linux running with a flash drive but, what I want to know is if it's possible to download linux with it (dual boot). If not is there any other way? I'm using an Ubuntu like distro.

A. You have at least 2 options: use unetbootin (see link below) and use an usb drive. or use wubi to download ubuntu to your computer and install from there.

Any advice on starting a webhosting and computer consulting business?

Q. I have a friend of mine who has offered to set me up with a linux-based VPS, and was thinking of starting a webhosting business with this? In addition I was thinking about doing some consulting like setting up servers for small businesses, setting up home wireless networks, and PC repair? Any advice?

A. I have been self-employed as a systems engineer for over 3 years and the best advice I ever got was don't undervalue your services. It is much easier to give discounts than it will be to raise your rate in the future. Bill for every minute you work and then add lines to your invoice like "New customer discount" or give them a discount if the hit a certain number of hours each month/quarter/year. Be confident in your skills and what they are really worth. Don't give it away. Let them know why you are giving them a discount. The second best advice I got was "A value that is not recognized is no value at all." In other words, if your clients don't know that you are doing something special for them they will come to expect it. List everything you do on your invoice. The final advice is to form a LLC or a business entity that will separate your work from your personal life. If for some reason a client wants to take legal action they will have to take it towards your "company" not you. They cannot go after your personal possessions. Self-employment is awesome! I will never go back to working for the "man". I wish you the best of luck.

How to install a GUI on a Centos Linux VPS?
Q. I have a 4GB VPS I am having trouble setting up a gui and vnc, all the guides that i am finding are outdated and my commands come back as No group available for gnome and kde. The server is running centos 6. My question is, is there any easy way to set it up. I am very limited to what i know about Linux, i also already have YUM installed
