What are the cons and prons of the following types of computer?

A. Mac - overpriced, inferior hardware, you're locked into Apple hardware, anything other than running files takes knowledge of the Unix shell. There are no advantages.

Unix - you need a knowledge of Unix. No friendly wizards to do it for you. Same as a Mac. (Not surprising, since Mac OSX is FreeBSD, a Unix offshoot.)

Windows - easier to run for 99.99% of computer users. Disadvantage - ease of writing viruses for i, so the average computer user, not knowing how to not download viruses, downloads more of them.

A. UNIX is on servers, man. Remember Jurassic park? They used UNIX. UNIX is mainly used when you want computing time to go toward something more important than a user interface, like accessing data, like on servers.

How to install a proxy server on a Linux server and use it from my Windows computer?

Q. My Linux server is in the USA. I'm in Canada. I want to use my Linux server as a proxy to be "detected" as coming from the USA when I surf the web. Thank you for your help!
It would be nice to have a step-by-step how-to.

A. A very easy and non-permanent way to do this can be done using ssh. You could use cron to automate this so that it is always on, or on at certain times.

How do I remotely execute Command Line commands from my laptop to a Linux Server?
Q. I am trying to download and install Icast 2 on a remote Linux server. I have rights to the server and can also FTP or access CPanel remotely, but want to remotely execute commands on the Linux Server to install and configure the Icecast and other software. THANKS!!!

A. I assume you are coming from a Windows Machine ? This Linux server most likely has SSH running opposed to Telnet so you need to setup a session using putty. You can also send files over ssh using a free app such as winSCP. Another option is to setup a vncsession on the server , and connect with a remote desktop session.

A. a "linux server" is nothing more than an IBM compatible PC with Linux running as it's operating system.
Linux nowadays has drivers for most common hardware on the market, so as long as you stick with industry standard components (ASUS or INTEL motherboards, 3-com or d-link Ethernet, ATI or Matrox video, Creative labs sound card....you get the idea) You'll be fine. I just suggest you purchase the systems from a store that will pre-load the linux onto the units to your specifications so that if there are any issues, they can be solved before the unit is shipped.

A. Download the Linux installer CD or DVD image file. Next, burn the image to a disc - this is not the same thing as just copying it onto a disc. If you have Windows Vista or 7 then right click the file and choose 'open with Windows disc image burner' from the menu. With Windows 8 choose 'burn image to disc' from the menu. Next, boot the laptop from the CD or DVD and then follow the instructions that it presents you with. If you're unfamiliar with Linux you should probably use Ubuntu as it's the easiest to use.

This method also provides an easy way to remove it again.

Any good linux distro for an old Pentium III Computer?

Q. I have an old Pentium III computer with 128mb of RAM in it. What would be a good linux to put in it. I hate DSL and Puppy and I love a lot of ready to use programs. (Ubuntu Alternative maybe like CrunchBang Linux?)

A. Most solutions require that you are able to see a menu item or open a terminal and type a command since you cannot see ANYTHING the only solution is to reinstall it and be aware of any options for font size and video formats when you do.

Q. i run my crunchbang from usb (to avoid the bothersome choice everytime i turn on my computer) is there any way for the updates to stick whilst running it from the usb?

A. No. I'm guessing that your distribution is running from an image on the USB. You'd have to update a real installation and create a new Live USB image.

And is the choice more bothersome than not being able to keep your distribution up to date?

but google chrome was designed to be fast
A great OS for something like net books that are only really good for watching videos and social networking

Q. My friend told me to switch over to Google Chrome, which i did. I am a Internet Explorer user and I upgraded Internet Explorer to version 9 and it seems like its the same as Google Chrome. What would be the benefits of the two?
Well internet explorer 9 too shows most visited web sites and is insanely fast lol. I guess one point would be security since internet explorer is a widely used browser.

A. Firefox 4 is even faster than IE and Chrome, over 9 million downloads in two days and it's available for Windows XP, which IE 9 isn't.

Chrome and IE isn't nearly as customizable as Firefox, Firefox has tens of thousands of add-ons, persona, themes etc.

Another great thing is it's available for Windows, OS X and Linux, one can auto-sync so all versions of Firefox are the same across different hardware. :)

Also with Firefox you don't have to worry if Microsoft, Apple or Google is spying on you, the code is open for people to see. (and improve on)

And Firefox with add-on's runs extremely fast on single core computers with 2.3 GHz and a mere 512K of RAM under Linux, so the "memory" issues is because of Windows bloat, PC vendor installed junk and anti-malware, not Firefox.

I use Windows in VM all the time, it always needs more memory than anything else I run. Nearly 2GB, that's with the eye candy turned way down. Just about all new Windows PC's today need their RAM bumped up right from the gate, especially after updating.

How secure is Google Chrome compared to say Mozilla Firefox?

Can you use the same code and commands that you use to set up Red Hat Fedora server to set up Ubuntu server?

Q. I have Ubuntu 7.04 server running on an older comp. i have and im trying to teach myself how to get a web server running. I've got a lot of info off of the web, but i also came across the Red Hat Fedora and Enterprise Linux Bible 4 . I wanted to know if i could use that to work on my Ubuntu 7.04 server?

A. RedHat uses RPM for packaging. Ubuntu uses deb. The package managers and their commands are different. No doubt there are differences in config files (names, locations, etc.)

A. You seem to know the name RedHat but not enough about it to not ask this question. To the person who said that RedHat no longer exists and then turned around and said it is RedHat Enterprise, doesn't that sound a little silly? To answer the question you asked, YES AND NO. No you cannot get RedHat for free, it went commercial quite awhile ago. However they continued on with the home-user version renaming it Fedora to distinguish it from the commercial version. And what exactly do you mean "...free of any charge as it is an open source software??" Where did you get the idea that open-source is synonymous with free? I bet you've heard about the free software movement and think all open-source software is free. The GPL ( http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html ) states that a program with this license is copy-lefted. This means it is free to redistribute and change the software as you see fit, even to sell it (yes, sell someone else's program for your own profit as long as you leave the license intact and allow the people that buy or receive the software from you to do the exact same thing. I hope that this clarifies things a little for you. I didn't mean to sound so harsh, it was not my intention.

What is the maximum amount of memory Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 supports?
Q. I've searched the red hat website and all I could find is that RHEL 5 supports up to 2 CPUs. I'm trying to find out what is the maximum amount of memory RHEL 5 can support. Please list any websites where I can get more information about linux hardware.

A. RHEL 5 supports unlimited memory! If you are running it as a desktop with Multi OS then its only 4Gigs. Cool ain't it.
