How do I run a web browser from linux command line?

Q. I an VERY new to linux. I have installed Fedora 5 in text mode. I have a Linux book and am trying to slowly learn linux. So from the console, or command line, how do I run a web browser. Also how do I run the X Windows System?

A. If you installed in text mode, maybe you didn't install X. You probably have a text mode browser. Try lynx or elinks. If the startx command doesn't work, try "yum install x-window-system". By the way, Fedora 5 is old. The current version of Fedora is 9.

How can I set folder permissions in linux in such a way that users can create files/folders, but not delete?
Q. I have made a folder on my linux server, which needs to function as some sort of "deposit box".

Users should be able to create files & folders, but not delete them after they have been created.
Is that possible from a linux command line?

A. You'd probably have to mess with umask and chmod.
umask [-p] [-S] [mode]
The user file-creation mask is set to mode. If mode begins with a digit, it is interpreted as an octal number; otherwise it is interpreted as a symbolic mode mask similar to that accepted by chmod(1). If mode is omitted, the current value of the mask is printed. The -S option causes the mask to be printed in symbolic form; the default output is an octal number. If the -p option is supplied, and mode is omitted, the output is in a form that may be reused as input. The return status is 0 if the mode was successfully changed or if no mode argument was supplied, and false otherwise.

Q. What wireless internet cards work right out of the box for the linux ubuntu operating system, i need to buy one but I have no clue about any of the linux command lines or anything. I also have a zyxel g router

A. I have a Dell desktop with a LinkSys WMP54GS wireless card. After installing Ubuntu the wireless card was automatically recognized.

How do I block websites on my computer?

Q. I use Google Chrome. On a linux machine, though I doubt that's relevant.

This ear I am taking 8 different senior highschool courses, and I have a habit of aimlessly looking for funny things on the internet. I need to block my favorite websites until I'm in good habits. Like putting a padlock on the fridge when you know your weakness.

A. First of all âhostsâ is the name of the file not the folder. Please refer to the screenshot above.

Ok, letâs start from the first step. When you typed
notepad %windir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts in the run command, were you not able to see the file named âhostsâ getting opened in notepad?

If not, then copy the hosts file from other computer to your targeted computer at the location %windir%\system32\drivers\etc

What to do after the program code is finished and ready to be distributed?
Q. As an example, I have finished writing a BASIC or Java code in a text editor such as notepad. However, the only way I could run it is by clicking 'run' in the IDE. This way, it is impossible to distribute an app to public. What happens next, and how can I be able to run it without the IDE and distribute it to everyone else? How do I also upload an HTML file so that it is publicly available (as a website)?

A. compile it (build). you want an .exe file. I didn't think it would make you a web site too. I think that's up to you to make. learn html5 or html 4.01 oif 5 is too intimidating.

open source software projects on sourceforge.net typically use a wiki now, but you can use html if you want. If this is VB and you don't own the $800+ version of Visual Studio, you can't distribute your software under an Open Source License, with the source, or disclose the source code (Express version). Read the License Agreement / EULA where it says Distribution.

the $800 version isn't so hot either, because you must license it so people run it only on windows OS's.
that means no macs or linux or whatever.

How do I run a exec file and let the batch file carry on?
Q. Or in Linux to run xemacs from the terminal, I would do:
xemacs &

This would launch xemacs and return control to the terminal. I want to do similar in XP's cmd.

Found the answer. It is e.g.:
start "" notepad.exe

A. It works exactly the same way.

For instance if I put notepad.exe into a line in a batch file, notepad would open and the batch file would be halted until notepad was closed at which time the batch file would resume.

If you want to open a program and then continue the batch without exiting that program, use call.

eg. Call notepad.exe

Where is the offical site to download linux?

Q. How do I know which is the best place to download Linux? How do I know that the site I download form is a offical site of Linux?

A. There is no "official" linux.

There are many different distributions or 'flavors' of linux. some are easier to learn than others. some are on CD some on 2 or more.

When I was interested in Linux I went to www.linuxiso.org

That site has downloads for 15 or 20 distributions of linux and links you to the official download site for that particular distro. I would recommend going there first.

Before you download and install any distribution make sure that all your hardware and software is compatible and download ALL the necessary drivers before you make the big switch to linux or you will be in a world of hurt trying to find these drivers after the face, especially if the driver you are looking for is for your video, keyboard, or internet.

Linux can be good to learn and has advantages over windows XP and possibly over Vista as well such as security, lack of viruses, and stability.

How do you download Linux to a Windows XP PC without downloading Windows 7?
Q. I need to download Linux so i can get a software on my PC called Rosegarden which only runs on Linux..i know of some ways to download Linux but you need to have Windows 7 which i do not but i really need Rosegarden and i cannot buy windows 7..any help? thankss :)

A. Uh? Why the heck would you need windows 7 to use Linux? It's a FREE Operating system, who ever says you need windows 7 is full of bull. Download a distro (ubuntu is likely best for a beginner) bear in mind, Linux is NOTHING like windows and you may find yourself frustrated and lost.

Q. i have a computer with no operating system on it. It's pretty useless right now so i want to put linux on it since its free. All the sites aren't helping.

A. ok, well to me it seems liek you know nothing about linux. except its free and lots of people say "go with linux its great"

it is great, but only if you know how to use it. it seems you just want a free operating system. Because you want just a new operating system to run i would recommend Linspire, it is what used to be known as "Lindows" although linspire costs something, they do have a free version called "Freespire" it is VERY easy to use it was my first linux distro ( now i am into slackware [Wolvix])

most people will says screw that! learn how to use linux, you can.... but you probably wont, you will probably get bored of it because you just dont know how to use it.

ubuntu is great, mepis is great red hat is great, their are plenty of great ones out there... but its kinda a "to each his own" typa thing if you want a free operating system that is easy to use and you dont have to learn commands just to install a program i would go with Freespire, it is a lot like windows, just faster, safer, and ..not windows.

it has all kinds of free software and windows emulators built it, it is easy to find new software with "click and run" service.

Can I get Youtube partnership through my brother in UK if it's not supported in my country?

Q. I have a channel about Linux tutorials that has millions of views and subs. Youtube partnership program is not supported in my country. So if I change my id location to UK and give my brother's address (or whatever) who lives in UK, would that work?
I mean i could give ownership of the ID to my brother and change the country in account settings to UK, but upload videos from my own country.

A. If you really trust your brother, and he is indeed trustworthy, I don't see why not. I would however make a formal arrangement so there is no confusion later. The basic terms is that he acts as a representative for you in respect to you-tube and cashes out the money in return for something like 5% or 15 pounds per moth, whichever is less.

Does anyone know of a website with Linux tutorials?
Q. I'm looking for a website with simple tutorials for Xandros Linux. I've been looking around, but the only ones I've found are for Ubuntu.

I probably will change to Ubuntu or similar soon-ish, but in the meantime, I'd just like a webpage with simple instructions for simple tasks, like customizing my computer/ installing programs.

A. Here is a link to a few xandros tutorials. There are no manu around because xandros offers a fee for support service and tries to steer people to that. Many of the xandros tutorials here are for the eee pc which is a specialized "frugal" install to fit the eee pc. As you can see there are also tutorial for ubuntu on the right and many other distros.
Ubuntu has many more tutorials available.

Q. I know there are a lot of different distributions, but is there a good beginners tutorial that teaches the basics of installing, configuring, and using Linux? Also a site that maybe goes into advanced topics after you have mastered the basics. Thanks for the help!

A. I am biased here but if you are going to install Linux I would suggest Suse 10 or Suse 10.1, it is very easy to install, you can accept the defaults without any problems, just follow the onscreen instructions, just boot from CD 1.

What Norton Antivirus product should I buy for protecting 6 server machines running windows 2003?

Q. I'd rather run Linux but.. some government people, probably don't know much about computers at all, are forcing us to use Windows.

They want Norton protecting all of them, despite only two of the machines being externally visible.

A. There is a corporate version of Norton Antivirus that has a much smaller memory/cpu usage footprint than the normal retail versions. Its just Symantec Antivirus 11.0. However, they now call it Symantec Endpoint Protection. I'd go with that to keep it simple.

How to remove linux from desktop computer using xp cd?
Q. I am using linux in my computer and do not like it and i want to remove it but i have no idea and i only have xp cd tell the full step.

A. HI There,

I had the same experience using LInux and decided to switch back to XP. Many of the applications I used simply did not work with LInux. Also configuring the printer, scanner (and wireless adapter) were difficult or even impossible. Not Linux's fault but the manufacturers did not include drivers for LInux.

It is not difficult to install XP and it only takes about 40 minutes or so for the installation. After installing there will be about 80 updates from Microsoft which will take longer than the install. If you have the original XP then you will want to update to SP-2 and then update to SP-3 since SP-3 is the only version still supported.

Before installing I like to write down the 25 digit key code on the tag located on the CD ( use big letters and numbers to make it easy to read later ).

Also write down all the settings needed to connect to the internet. Once XP is installed they will no longer be available.

Another thing to do is decide upon which antivirus app you want to install and have the CD or file ready on a flash drive ready for when you connect to the internet. At the very least have the URL written down so you can install ASAP. It only takes a few minutes for an unprotected system to be infected by a virus. The first thing to do after connectingto the interent is to install your antivirus and make sure the firewall is enabled.

Now you are ready to install XP.

To install all you need to do is insert your XP CD/DVD into the optical drive and boot from it then follow the instructions.

You will be asked for your time zone , keyboard configuration, password for admin account and at some time you need to enter the 25 digit COA that you have written down.

You do not need to enter a password (just press <Enter> with the dialog box blank or if you want a password; go ahead and enter it (write it down and save in a safe place). I don't use a password but if you do make sure to remember it .

To boot from the optical drive restart your computer and watch the monitor. It will show the memory and hardware check and at the bottom of the screen it will tell you which key to press to change the boot order. Probably <F12>, <F8>, <Esc> or <Delete>.

As soon as that message appears; press the key and it should boot from the CD/DVD.
If you are not quick enough; shut down and try again.

Once the computer has booted from the CD/DVD drive just follow the instructions for a full installation.
This will format the hard drive and install XP to the entire C-Drive. Formatting will erase Linux and set up the drive for Windows XP.

After the installation has finished you will need to reboot and you will be running Windows XP.
First go into security settings and enable the firewall.
Second setup your internet and connect to the internet. Immediately install your antivirus and let it update. Your antivirus may want to do a full system scan as part of the installation. That's OK.

After the antivirus is running Windows will want to update. If it does not ask then go to the Microsoft website and find updates and install them.

Note: if you XP CD/DVD is not a genuine copy for your system the installation will fail at some point or it will not update.

What is the best free antivirus for a Macbook Pro with Mac OS X?
Q. I just bought a Macbook Pro and I run Frostwire and I don't have antivirus to protect my Mac. I am new to Apple so I hardly know anything about this yet, so any help with be great, Thanks.

A. clamav is a good antivirus program that has long existed for linux and since the macos is now based on bsd which is a very very similar os to linux, there is a version of clamav for mac too. Im not a mac user so beyond knowing about it, i don't know much about any others.

edit - Actually, there is a very good reason to have virus protection on a mac. Even though most viruses can't run on macs, it doesn't mean they can't be there and transferred to a pc and infect that pc. He says he is downloading stuff using a p2p network and that tends to be one of the most common ways viruses are spread so it is only prudent to have an antivirus program that can scan the downloaded files and clean them up if needed.

How do I run Steam games on Linux?

Q. I got Steam to work on Linux using Wine. All my games worked just fine for a while, but all of the sudden none of them will run (except Portal for some reason). When i try to open them it says, "Preparing to launch," then does nothing. Does anyone know what the problem is, or how to fix it?

A. You could use a program like WINE (Windows Emulator) to get it going. Or you can try a virtual machine but sometimes that wont load drivers and you still wont be able to play. The best option will be a dual boot of windows and linux. The reason being, that for the sake of stability, for the drivers to work, and for you to get a good performance it is just easier to play on Windows (since all PC games are generally designed for Windows environments).

How can i play COD MW2 on Linux Ubuntu?
Q. So i bought MW2 and installed steam on linux and then installed the game... after it finished, i launch the game and it opens but with a dark screen and the words seem to be corrupted , like they do not appear and i cant do anything with it... how can i play MW2 on my computer, although i have Wine and the game opens through it already,,, what should i do?

A. Try using PlayOnLinux. It will configure Wine automatically for COD MW2.

How can i Install steam on ubuntu os and make it work?
Q. I am hoping someone will be able to give instructions that are easily understood, any time i go to a web page with instructions to install steam on ubuntu i find terms that i dont really understand and cant figure out how to install it.

How do I download stuff on a Linux computer?

Q. My brother just made the Dell computer a Linux and I have no idea how to download anything. I keep trying to download Skype but it won't download correctly when I press Save. It keeps opening a new link on Google Chrome and its about blank. How do I download stuff on a Linux computer? I think its a Ubuntu! Please help I'm clueless and just guessing what kind of Linux it is because my brother did it.

Computer requirements for college? Is a linux computer a bad idea?
Q. I will need a computer for college, and I heard that some schools limit what OS's or types of computer their students can bring. For example, only windows, or only computers with Microsoft Word. Do any of you go to college and know whether this is true? And if you do have a linux computer at college (which I want) have there been any problems?

A. I had a couple issues using a linux distro in college. Most I was able to resolve; however, 1 issue a did run into was that some of the online resources that the college required me to access were only compatible with Internet Exploder... cough.. hack, I mean Internet Explorer. Granted this was entirely the resource's flaw and had nothing to do with linux, but there wasnt much i could do about it. If anything, u may just want to do a multi-boot setup. You should be able to get a discounted or *free copy of windows from the school, so multi-booting shouldnt be to big of an issue

Is it worth buying a Linux computer - or are they not very good?
Q. I am planning on buying a linux computer but I have never owned one before, I was wondering if anyone knew anything about them - can you use word programs and computer games like The Sims?
