Could i use linux for light gaming on old computers?

Q. I like to browse the net and also play such games as DDO and LOTRO. I have really old crappy computers, so i think a lighter os would help. They use mainly XP, but some vista, and maybe a 7, but all windows. Some of them can run the games, and there are ways of playing them on linux (wine), so i see no problem with switching, and i am at least mildly compitent with computers. Any thought to convince/deter me, or any ideas on a specific os (ubuntu, mint...)

A. Yes, but it won't improve performance. Unless the game uses and openGL renderer, expect 1/3-1/2 FPS's under WINE.

There is out there a thing called Tiny XP which is XP minus everything you don't need for most games. Illegal if you just download the .iso and install it, but legal if you use your CD, rip it, modify it with special tools, burn it, and install with your own windows key. Something like that or just a fresh install would give you performance as good as your going to get for windows games.

How to install msn instant messenger onto ubuntu?
Q. I just recently got ubuntu and i am having problems installing and downloading files, Does anyone have any clue how to download MSN messenger on ubuntu? When i try the regular way it says i dont have the right stuff to do it, i have hear about doing it using linux wine. but i dont know how to do that, helP!!!!

A. Hey there!

The problem is, Windows Live Messenger doesn't work proporly in Wine yet, So you have two options.

1) Use Pidgin, It's MSN and it comes with Ubuntu! To get to it go to Applications, Internet, Pidgin Instant Messenger and follow the instructions

2) You can get aMSN, It's more MSN Like and supports Webcam. You can install it by Clicking Applications, Accessories, Terminal and copying and pasting the following in:

gksu apt-get install amsn

Then pressing enter. When you are back at the command line (After all the text has finished flashing up), Close your terminal and go to Applications, Internet, aMSN.

Hope I helped! Ubuntu 4eva!

Are Ohava Linux laptops as good as they describe them?

Q. I am planning to by a Linux Laptop, In my search I ao this company site Ohava but I could not get any review about their devices. Cane anybody help me?

A. From what I can tell they are a newer company, without a lot of a track record, but on the plus side the designs are straightforward (I would describe them as a mid 90's ironic throwback) and allow easy access to the internals for upgrades and modifications. Also looks like decent price points for the hardware involved.

How do you share the internet through a Linux laptop?
Q. Im trying to share the internet through a wireless connection on my linux laptop, through to my xbox 360 (via ethernet cable)

A. Bridging, for example, links the two network adapters so that Ethernet frames flow freely between them, just as if they were connected on a simple hub. All of the traffic heard on one interface is passed through to the other.

You can set up a bridge so that the computer itself does not participate in the network at all, essentially transforming the computer into an overpriced Ethernet repeater. But more likely you will want to access the Internet as well as bridge traffic between the ports. That isn't complicated, either.

Bridging requires the bridge-utils package, a standard component of every modern Linux distribution that provides the command-line utility brctl.

To create a bridge between your network adapters, begin by taking both adapters offline with the ifdown command. In our example eth0/eth1 setup, run sudo ifdown eth0 and sudo ifdown eth1 from the command line.

Next, create the bridge with sudo brctl addbr bridge0. The addbr command creates a new "virtual" network adapter named bridge0. You then connect your real network adapters to the bridge with addif: sudo brctl addif bridge0 eth0 adds the first adapter, and sudo brctl addif bridge0 eth1 adds the second.

Once configured, you activate the bridge0 virtual adapter just as you would a normal, physical Ethernet card. You can assign it a static IP address with a command like sudo ifconfig bridge0 192.168.1.100 netmask 255.255.255.0, or tell it to retrieve its configuration via DHCP with sudo dhclient bridge0.

You can then attach as many computers, hub, switches, and other devices as you want through the machine's Ethernet port, and they will all be able to see and communicate with each other. On the downside, if you have a lot of traffic, your computer will spend some extra energy passing all of those Ethernet frames back and forth across the two adapters.

Which is the smallest Linux distro which can read ntfs partitions?

Q. I need to recover some files from my windows installation using a linux live cd. I have some imp documents in c: which i need to copy into a pen drive. Which will be the most suitable linux for this purpose?

A. You could use Puppy linux.
You could also use a Windows "live cd" such as Bart's PE.

Can I install the grub bootloader onto my laptop from ubuntu live cd without an installation of linux?
Q. Can I install the GRUB Bootloader from an Ubuntu Linux Live CD without already having Linux installed or having to install Linux?

If not, is there a way to install just the Windows Bootloader from a disk or another bootloader from a disk to my laptop?

(Its because i deleted my ubuntu install which had GRUB and now when i turn it on it just comes up with "Error 17" in grub)

A. If you don't have a linux os on your computer it may not help to install grub.
You can install the windows bootloader.
You did not say if you are using xp or vista.
The first 2 links are for xp the last link is for vista.
Good luck

Can you help with an Ubuntu Live CD monitor resolution problem?
Q. My Windows has failed me for the moment, and so I'm working off of a Ubuntu Linux Live CD. It's great and all, but for some reason I can't get the system to run at any resolution higher than 800x600 at 61Hz (mine is a standard monitor designed for 1280x1024). Any ideas why? Better still, any ideas of how I can fix it?

A. Every Ubuntu LiveCD I've ran has allowed my to change the screen resolution. The only possible problem I can think of is if there's a compatibility issue between Ubuntu and that monitor model. If you have one handy, try a different monitor.

Any good linux distro for an old Pentium III Computer?

Q. I have an old Pentium III computer with 128mb of RAM in it. What would be a good linux to put in it. I hate DSL and Puppy and I love a lot of ready to use programs. (Ubuntu Alternative maybe like CrunchBang Linux?)

A. I thoroughly recommend taking a look at Linux Mint 6 Felicia Fluxbox Community Edition http://www.linuxmint.com/rel_felicia_fluxbox_whatsnew.php

System Requirements

x86 processor
128 MB of system memory (RAM)
2 GB of disk space for installation
VGA graphics card capable of 800x600 resolution
CD-ROM drive

Download http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=35

LUg.

On crunchbang Linux everything is incredibly small and I can't see a thing. Is there any fix?
Q. I'm unable to do anything with my crunchbang. Please help.

A. Most solutions require that you are able to see a menu item or open a terminal and type a command since you cannot see ANYTHING the only solution is to reinstall it and be aware of any options for font size and video formats when you do.
Good luck

is it possible to update crunchbang linux whilst running it from usb?
Q. i run my crunchbang from usb (to avoid the bothersome choice everytime i turn on my computer) is there any way for the updates to stick whilst running it from the usb?

A. No. I'm guessing that your distribution is running from an image on the USB. You'd have to update a real installation and create a new Live USB image.

And is the choice more bothersome than not being able to keep your distribution up to date?

Whats are some differences between a laptop and a tablet?

Q. I know that a tablet is touch screen when you swivel it over, but are there any other differences? I want to know because the price difference is a lot.

A. The biggest differences between a laptop and tablet systems is that usually laptops have better speed CPU's and larger Hard drives. Now some tablet system run Window based software and others don't and you can even get a laptop with Linux.

I believe that Laptops are better designed then tablets in terms of handling you dropping them plus the usage. Because tablets for the most part touch and tap controlled you will see damage to the screen area much faster then a laptop. I think you have more flexibility with laptops as well since you add accessories much easier and software which some tablets won't run well you can use them for more things where tablets are designed more for kind of reading.

If you want to rotate your screen just buy a monitor that will allow that option which some laptops have on them.

That's some of the reason I like, hope that helps you out.

How do i use a kindle fire as a computer tablet?
Q. AI have a kindle fire 2. I am in drawing and stuff, but i really need a tablet. SO i asked one of my friends if a kindle fire can be used for a computer tablet. she said yes. I can't find anywhere with that kind of information. I need help.

A. A kindle fire uses type of linux like an android operating system. You can buy applications from Amazon and they run just like apps on a tablet. Just look for them on the kindle store.

What are some cheap graphics tablets for drawing on a computer?
Q. I want reliability and cost -$50. I'm inexperienced with digital art so if you could also share what problems may arise please inform me. I use Mac and Linux, not Windows.

A. There are very few for $50 unless you find something on eBay or get one that is used and very small size. This one is around $53: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823166106&cm_re=graphic_tablet-_-23-166-106-_-Product

How would you go about this linux task?

Q. 1. I must grep through executable scripts, but they don't end in .doc or .exe tag

2. the grep signature will be "rcp" other remote commands so I can change them secure commands like "scp"

Is there any way I could do this in Linux and using Perl?

A. find . -type f -perm /u+x -exec grep -l -w rcp {} \;

Find regular files starting at the current directory which are executable by the owner. When found grep on whole words of "rcp", but display only the file names.

If you really want to replace "rcp" with "scp" in all cases (not recommended because that is too sweeping), then add a sed loop. Something like this:

find . -type f -perm /u+x -exec grep -l -w rcp {} \; | while read NAME; do cat $NAME | sed -e 's/rcp /scp /g' > .tmp.$$ ; mv .tmp.$$ $NAME; done

Be SURE to test that thoroughly before trying that last bit.

How do I turn my Ubuntu/Linux PC into a server for my Windows 7 PC?
Q. Is this a good idea? Will my Windows PC get extra protection since I will be going on the Internet using the Ubuntu as a server, as an intermediary? How difficult is it to do this?

A. This question is pretty poorly designed. There is no "Server for windows" in Linux. You can do several things with linux and connect/use them from windows though. You can make linux a firewall and router, connect it to your cable/dsl modem so you can have multiple computers use your internet connection at one time. You can run web, ftp, and other servers for files and web pages. You can also run Samba which allows you to access and store files on the linux hard driver over the network. linux also makes a GREAT extension to your windows environment using things like xdmcp, rdp, ssh, scp. if you do not know what any of these terms are, google is your buddy. You can also set up a web proxy using linux and this could definitely be used to increase your web browsing security in windows by blocking malicious web sites. Pretty much anything you want to do with Linux is limited by you and your willingness to learn.

Nothing is simple click and go in linux. You have to be willing to experiemnt, read, and learn.

How do you transfer files from the command line in Red Hat Linux?
Q. I'm trying to transfer files from a Fedora Core to the host server, which is a Red Hat v 8. How do I do it from the command line?

A. Well there are several ways to do this. They depend on what servers are running on the host machine. If you can ssh to the host server, then the best way is "scp <filename> <host machine>:<filename>". If this is not setup you can try ftp or one of the disk sharing protocols like Samba or NFS.

Is there any Virtual Machine for mac that supports 3D acceleration?

Q. I want to have Visual Effects enabled on my Linux Virtual Machine (Ubuntu).

Good answer gets 5 stars!

A. No. There currently aren't any virtualiziers on the market which can emulate OpenGL. VMWare Fusion is able to emulate Direct3d for windows virtual machines, but it doesn't have support for the OpenGL renderer needed by compositing window managers in Linux.

How do I change the command line prompt to show just the login id.?
Q. This is on a linux virtual machine?

A. The easiest way to do it for all users is to edit the file /etc/profile.

There should be some lines in that file for setting PS1, which is the primary shell prompt. You can edit or add lines like this:

PS1='\u@\h:\$ '
export PS1

This will make the default prompt this, with a space after the dollar sign:

user@hostname $

How do I create user accounts using a script that reads a list of names from a file?
Q. It creates user accounts for each name. This is on a linux virtual machine.

A. You'll have to write a shell script that reads the names and information from the file one line at a time, then pipes it to a tool like adduser, which will then add the user information to the appropriate system files. This has to be done as root or with admin privileges.
