How do I swith operating systems on my laptop?
Q. My friend gave me an Ubuntu/Linux laptop but on the side of it it says Windows Vista. Does that mean It used to be Windows and if so how can I change it back. Please help, I really hate using Linux, it's a piece of trash.

A. Linux is great if you know what you are doing, and it isn't hard to figure out. If you must, though, then there are two possibilities for getting Windows back on it.

1. Ask if it is dual partitioned. If it is, then when you turn it on, when it is still in the BIOS it will give you an option briefly for which system to load. Select Windows and you will load up no problem.

2. If it not dual partitioned you will have to use a Windows OS disk. Those can be about $100+ unless your friend has one.

If you don't like Ubuntu you can try Linux Mint or some other nice operating system for free. Different versions of Linux run different and you might like another version better. You could also Google "free non linux OS" or something of the sort.

If you post your main problem with Ubuntu under additional details, I will recommend something further.

How do I switch my Chromebook back to Linux OS?
Q. I recently bought a Acer C7 Chromebook. The only downfall I could see was that it ran on Chrome OS but I had found I could get ChrUbuntu on it and it would run as a fully functional linux laptop. I did this and it worked but since the Chrome OS still lives on in its own dedicated partition it automatically booted into the Chrome OS when I restarted the computer. I would like to know how to run it back in ChrUbuntu. I know it's still on my computer but I don't know how to boot back into it. Thanks in advance!

A. delete the chrome os & reinstall the chrubintu os

Is it possible to put Windows XP or Vista onto a Linux netbook?

Q. Is it possible? I don't really want Linux, as I'm much more familiar with windows. How much would it cost?

A. first, look at the specs. if the HHD or SSD is small, you might be able to pull it off, but consider an external SSD or a high-capacity flash drive. Also, does it have an optical drive? if not, you would need an external one and it has to have some form of BIOS. (the thingy that loads before the OS). If the netbook meets all these, it might give you the option to boot from other sources. Press it and boot from the windows installation CD. Choose the highest capacity device that you can install it on. (With a netbook, you could probably do XP, but vista NO WAY!!!) Good luck! =D

Mount network drive on Linpus Linux Netbook?
Q. Is there easy way (for a complete linux newbie) to mount network drive on linpus linux netbook? I don't even know how to enter the commands on linpus linux although I have lots of experience on WIndows systems. TIA for your help.

A. Linux can read and write to most file formats. There are several ways to do this
The below assumes you have set up network security properly and have access rights to the drive

From the command line:

use the mount command

mount -t (type) device) (dir)
where type is the type of device the drive is
device is what the device is
dir is what the root director is

hint enter man mount at the command line to see the manual pages for the mount command for a fuller explanation and for correct syntax

On a GUI

Use the GUI to navigate the network to the drive you want to access
right mouse on the drive
mount the drive

Wish I could be more help, but I'm not sure what distro you are running

Good Luck and Welcome to Linux

What is linux netbook operating system?
Q. I know that it is an operating system, but what does that even mean? I have windows vista now, and heard that linux is better, but I'm not even sure what it is supposed to be better at!

Can it go on any type of computer?

Also, what is the cost?

A. Linux is an alternate operating system similar in many ways to Unix. It was invented by Linus Torvalds. The core of the operating system is available for free. There are many companies that distribute linux with various different bundles of software. I prefer OpenSuse however Ubuntu or Kubuntu is often considered easier for the average end user.

http://www.opensuse.org
http://www.ubuntu.com/
http://www.kubuntu.org/

Why is it better?

More secure
more stable
faster
free

Did i mention it was free?

Not all hardware out there has drivers for Linux so no; it won't run <any> computer but You can run linux on more different computers than MS Vista. There are linux versions that will run with very old hardware and it can run on very modern systems so you have a lot more flexibility. I have a customer that is using 3000 old 486 machines from their surplus now because Linux is so much faster and more efficient and can work on those older systems and make a functional machine out of what would otherwise be junk and my machine here is running a quad athlon with Nvidia 9900 graphics on quad monitors and 32GB of Ram with OpenSuse 11.1. Life is good :D

How do I block websites on my computer?

Q. I use Google Chrome. On a linux machine, though I doubt that's relevant.

This ear I am taking 8 different senior highschool courses, and I have a habit of aimlessly looking for funny things on the internet. I need to block my favorite websites until I'm in good habits. Like putting a padlock on the fridge when you know your weakness.

A. First of all âhostsâ is the name of the file not the folder. Please refer to the screenshot above.

Ok, letâs start from the first step. When you typed
notepad %windir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts in the run command, were you not able to see the file named âhostsâ getting opened in notepad?

If not, then copy the hosts file from other computer to your targeted computer at the location %windir%\system32\drivers\etc

What to do after the program code is finished and ready to be distributed?
Q. As an example, I have finished writing a BASIC or Java code in a text editor such as notepad. However, the only way I could run it is by clicking 'run' in the IDE. This way, it is impossible to distribute an app to public. What happens next, and how can I be able to run it without the IDE and distribute it to everyone else? How do I also upload an HTML file so that it is publicly available (as a website)?

A. compile it (build). you want an .exe file. I didn't think it would make you a web site too. I think that's up to you to make. learn html5 or html 4.01 oif 5 is too intimidating.

open source software projects on sourceforge.net typically use a wiki now, but you can use html if you want. If this is VB and you don't own the $800+ version of Visual Studio, you can't distribute your software under an Open Source License, with the source, or disclose the source code (Express version). Read the License Agreement / EULA where it says Distribution.

the $800 version isn't so hot either, because you must license it so people run it only on windows OS's.
that means no macs or linux or whatever.

How do I run a exec file and let the batch file carry on?
Q. Or in Linux to run xemacs from the terminal, I would do:
xemacs &

This would launch xemacs and return control to the terminal. I want to do similar in XP's cmd.

Thanks in advance!
"call" doesn't work...
Found the answer. It is e.g.:
start "" notepad.exe

A. It works exactly the same way.

For instance if I put notepad.exe into a line in a batch file, notepad would open and the batch file would be halted until notepad was closed at which time the batch file would resume.

If you want to open a program and then continue the batch without exiting that program, use call.

eg. Call notepad.exe

Can you use PHP and Mysql with a Linux Live CD?

Q. If you come back to Windows will all your PHP & Mysql settings gone? Do you have to reinstall everything again if you decide to use a second time the Linux Live CD?? I don't want to install Linux permanently o0n my sustem but I would like to work with the Lice CD without losing my work & setings. Is it possible?

A. Linux LiveCD's are run within the RAM of your PC so you cannot save you settings between LIVE sessions.

One possibility is having Ubuntu installed on a USB Pendrive

How to make a live bootable usb?
Q. I want to make a bootable live usb for both linux(ubuntu) and windows 7...how to do it??please help....

A. The Linux one is easy.  Just download and run PendriveLinux with your favourite distro .iso.  Select it from the dropdown list when you run it.  http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/  If you make a Persistent file, then it will save changes you make to the installation on the USB drive.  I have a really nice Pinguy installation on a USB stick.

Windows 7 is a bit trickier, in that Windows doesn't allow you to do that sort of thing.  I doubt that it's possible.

how do you know if your PC can boot from a USB?
Q. I am looking to get a linux LIVE usb. And was wondering if my PC is new enough for it to boot from the USB.

Its a 2002 IBM Netvista desktop.(solid nice machine)

A. Insert a blank USB stick (some BIOS versions won't give the USB boot option if one isn't connected!) and restart.

On startup, keep tapping either F1, F2, F10,(Be Aware that some manufacturers also use F10 for system recovery!) Esc or Del (depending on your system) until you get to the BIOS setup screen.

Look for an option to change boot device, or similar, and see it it's listed. If it is, you're good to go âº

What is the best and easiest way to learn C++?

Q. I have absolutely NO knowledge of any computer language and I was told I should start with C++. So where is the best place to start? I thought maybe C++ for dummies, is that any good?

A. Your best bet is probably some books, C++ For Dummies would probably be a good start. Libraries usually contain books you can take out, or check for free ebooks on Google.

However, finding lessons about a subject online can sometimes be inaccurate or broken; But everyone has a better technique to learn things. It's really up to you to decide which one you want to use.

If you're running Windows, you can try Microsoft's express series, but if your PC has a small HDD, slow CPU, or under 2 gigs of ram, I don't recommend it due to how many useless programs it installs that slows down the overall performance of your PC after a while. If your on a mac or Linux you could try Eclipse Juno or CodeBlocks, depending on your taste.

For me, learning C/C++ was basically Trial and Error while looking things up and reading chapters of books. I used C#(.NET) for a while, so I learned the basics of programming. Just needed to learn how the actual program structure is assembled.

But once you get into a subject and find a problem, Google helps out quite a bit too.

What do I need to know to be a good ethical hacker, books i can read?
Q. What books do you recommend . I want to become a network security specialist one day .I know i need to understand Linux what else to I need to understand ???

A. I don't think even books are going to help you become a good anything, you're not even smart enough to know you should be asking this question in programming, and design. Don't bother asking there either, like I said, nothing is going to help a dummy like you.

business question "antique mall owner needing security camera system" which is the best to buy?
Q. Just trying to get input from someone that has an antique mall of similar business. I want to purchase a camera system that I can set up in "EACH" booth or atleast every other booth. Some can be dummies but I would like for atleast half of them to be the real deal. I ahve heard of dealers using globes and dummy cameras to deter thieves; does this work?
What system would you recommend and please don't say a 10,000 one, I cant afford that at the moment.

A. Hello

Dummy cameras are the worst possible they don't provide security and if someone is injured or claims to be injured in your store they can sue for providing a false sense of security. No professional security installer uses dummy cameras.

Here is a DVR that will work perfectly for you.

http://www.ascendentgroup.com/x4s.htm

I would recommend a Standalone DVR as they are more reliable and since they are linux based they are virus ans spy ware free.

The X4S Series DVR is an intelligent and professional CCTV management solution, integrating the latest technology and the most advanced features while maintaining a simple, intuitive, and graphical interface. The X4S Series DVR is a 24/7 turn key solution that meets demanding security needs to suit industrial and commercial applications. The X4S DVR is compatible with the X4 platform, allowing it to act as an IP server, while still remaining a standalone solution and allows you to view your cameras instantly over the internet with a PC or cell phone like the I-phone.

also here is some information on DVR and cameras you may want to read before buying a CCTV system.

Not all DVRs and security equipment are created equal, in fact there are many options that offer varying performance much like the automobile industry. In the world of DVRs you can find the equivalent of a $10,000 Kia and a $350,000 Ferrari and everything in between. Both have 4 wheels and windshield but that where the similarities end, itâs under the hood that counts. Just like any other consumer electronic in the end you get what you pay for.

I suggest you buy a PC based DVR has they have more processing power and normally have a much smaller file size and offer more features then Standalone DVR's. I know many people buy a cheap standalone DVR, only to upgrade to a PC based in 6 months especially when they are using it to manage a store remotely. Also PC based allows you to record up to 64 cameras where a standalone will have a limit of 16.

Many people have the misconception that a PC-Based DVR is simply an off-the-shelf PC with video capture (encoder) cards, display (decoder) cards and some generic OEM software. A true DVR requires years of research and development to facilitate the seamless integration of both the hardware and software. DVRs are highly complex systems that must run 24/7, processing millions of images per day. This makes consumer-level hardware inadequate for DVRs which is why Ascendent uses custom-built PCs with performance-level hardware.

My personal favorite DVR is Ascendent X4 series: Ascendentâs Tri-Fusion Hybrid Platform allows for the creation of a true hybrid surveillance system by utilizing the advantages of Analog, Megapixel, and IP technologies for unparalleled customization and expandability.

The X4 also uses the latest H.264/SVC codec offer video substantially better quality,. While its file size sizes is 30% smaller than MPEG-4, 60% smaller than MPEG-2, and exponentially smaller than MJPEG.

File size is crucial to streaming because most DVRâs on the market record at real time performance (30FPS per channel) so on a 4CH is trying to send 120, 8CH 240, and a 16CH 480 images per second which requires way too much bandwidth even for the most extreme internet connections.

The smaller the files size the more images are able to be sent, and the faster they can be processed improving both FPS and speed. File size is the heart of any DVR and goes far beyond just its streaming capabilities, as it also determines the recording storage time, how much you can back up at once, how fast it renders and searches video. The file size of a DVR impacts the performance of the DVR in just about every aspect from speed to longevity and is often the most important spec of any DVR.

If you are buying a DVR and streaming is a high priority I suggest you ask for a demo and connect to the DVR to make sure it is able to stream fast enough for your needs. Most DVRs say they have remote viewing but it is often too slow and laggy to be of any use especially if it is a standalone. Some good DVR brands that I recommend are Bosch, Pelco, Honeywell and Ascendent. These brands are what security professionals use.

I recommend Ascendent as they are less expensive because they cameras for companies like Bosch and Pelco and offer better performance but any of these 3 brands will work well.

These brand manufacturers also have a complete line of CCTV cameras and DVR for any application from residential to military and stand behind there warranties. You want to get a good bran name otherwise you will likely buy a product that work and cant be returned.

How would you go about this linux task?

Q. 1. I must grep through executable scripts, but they don't end in .doc or .exe tag

2. the grep signature will be "rcp" other remote commands so I can change them secure commands like "scp"

Is there any way I could do this in Linux and using Perl?

A. find . -type f -perm /u+x -exec grep -l -w rcp {} \;

Find regular files starting at the current directory which are executable by the owner. When found grep on whole words of "rcp", but display only the file names.

If you really want to replace "rcp" with "scp" in all cases (not recommended because that is too sweeping), then add a sed loop. Something like this:

find . -type f -perm /u+x -exec grep -l -w rcp {} \; | while read NAME; do cat $NAME | sed -e 's/rcp /scp /g' > .tmp.$$ ; mv .tmp.$$ $NAME; done

Be SURE to test that thoroughly before trying that last bit.

How do I turn my Ubuntu/Linux PC into a server for my Windows 7 PC?
Q. Is this a good idea? Will my Windows PC get extra protection since I will be going on the Internet using the Ubuntu as a server, as an intermediary? How difficult is it to do this?

A. This question is pretty poorly designed. There is no "Server for windows" in Linux. You can do several things with linux and connect/use them from windows though. You can make linux a firewall and router, connect it to your cable/dsl modem so you can have multiple computers use your internet connection at one time. You can run web, ftp, and other servers for files and web pages. You can also run Samba which allows you to access and store files on the linux hard driver over the network. linux also makes a GREAT extension to your windows environment using things like xdmcp, rdp, ssh, scp. if you do not know what any of these terms are, google is your buddy. You can also set up a web proxy using linux and this could definitely be used to increase your web browsing security in windows by blocking malicious web sites. Pretty much anything you want to do with Linux is limited by you and your willingness to learn.

Nothing is simple click and go in linux. You have to be willing to experiemnt, read, and learn.

How do you transfer files from the command line in Red Hat Linux?
Q. I'm trying to transfer files from a Fedora Core to the host server, which is a Red Hat v 8. How do I do it from the command line?

A. Well there are several ways to do this. They depend on what servers are running on the host machine. If you can ssh to the host server, then the best way is "scp <filename> <host machine>:<filename>". If this is not setup you can try ftp or one of the disk sharing protocols like Samba or NFS.

How do I establish a linux operatings system that would be similar to windows?

Q. Linux is free right. So if I have to buy a new hardrive, I won't need windows which is expensive. But how do I know which I should use. There seems to be many different linux operating system.

A. There are many flavours so you need to decide what you want to do with it (use it as a server, as a desktop etc). There are distributions who offer Live CD's. You boot up from a Live CD and are able to test that particular distribution without actually having to install it until you decide it's good for you.

Search on the net for tips about choosing a linux distribution.

Ubuntu should be good for a beginner.

How can I start Linux and what distribution do you think I should use?

How do you think I should start and what distribution do you recommend for a beginner who plans on programming and the like?Any helpful suggestions will be appreciated.

A. I thoroughly recommend two Linux distros.

Linux Mint 9 Main Edition which is based upon Ubuntu 10.04

Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) which is based upon Debian Lenny/Squeeze

Both are easy to install and use plus they come with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

HowTo install Nvidia Graphics Drivers on Debian
http://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers#Installapre-builtmodule

Alternatively install Linux Mint as a dual-boot with Windows using mint4win without partitioning mint4win works the same as Wubi as described below (not available on Linux Mint Debian)
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/wubi

You keep Windows as it is, mint4win only adds an extra option to boot into Linux Mint. mint4win does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application.

mint4win keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application.

Boot in to windows insert the Linux Mint LiveCD and you will offered the option of installing inside windows which is where the mint4win installer comes in, you will be asked how many gigabytes you wish to allocate to Linux Mint (I recommend 8gb) then you set a password for your installation then click install and thats it.

Once Linux Mint is fully installed upon starting your PC you will be given a choice of which operating system you want to use Windows or Linux Mint

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 9 or Linux Mint Debian then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD/DVD for installation

Linux Mint 9 and Linux Mint Debian can also be run direct from the LiveCD/DVD from Booting up without touching your Hard Drive

How can I remove Linux from my computer and restore the partition space to windows?
Q. I have both Linux Mint 11 and windows 7 on my computer and I no longer want it on my computer so... ya, pretty much says it all in the title.

A. (NOTE: A page titled "How to uninstall Fedora" was added to the project wiki after this blog was published, as noted in the comment section below in a post titled "Contribution is easy.")

Try "remove Fedora."

Nothing.

Go to Ubuntu's official documentation site and search for "uninstall Ubuntu."

You won't find anything in the "official" documentation but in the "community" section you find two entries that state "Wubi allows you to install and uninstall Ubuntu...."

In an installed Ubuntu distribution, clicking on Help and searching for uninstalling or removing Ubuntu finds nothing. A link ârepeat the search online at the Ubuntu help pagesâ brings up a 404 â page not found.

If you look hard enough on the real community support pages you'll find a post from July 2007 titled "HowTo: Remove Ubuntu (& Restore Windows)" .

Have a cow
The post starts out: "Okay, I know some people are going to have a cow because I'm posting this."

(No kidding. Just take a look at the excoriating flames that are sure to appear in the comments section of this blog.)

OpenSUSE does better. A search there finds the page titled SDB:How to Uninstall Linux from December 2006. The page includes more than 1,300 words to describe various processes.

Go to Google and search "install Linux" and you get about 1,450,000 hits. Try "uninstall Linux" and you get about 16,800. "Remove Linux" gets you about 53,300.

Why is it so hard to find instructions to remove Linux and then so hard to actually do it?

Why can't you just easily find the uninstall procedure in a help file, and click a button and follow the instructions?

Windows makes it easy
Opening the Windows XP Help and Support Center and searching for "uninstall Windows" brings up, first thing, "Uninstall Windows XP" and a 5-step process from the Control Center.

Did you know that in a dual-boot install Linux will partition your hard disk and if you remove the partitions without restoring the Master Boot Record on your boot-up disk, your computer won't start?

Did you know you'll likely need separate applications such as fixmbr or fdisk or partitioning software to get your system back the way it was, hopefully having not lost any data? Or you may need to change a BIOS setting to boot to a Windows CD and use its "Recovery Console?" These all depend on your version of Linux. Again, openSUSE seems to do the best job in automating the process, with the "YaST2 Control Center."

Oh, and if that dual installation included Windows, and partitions were resized, "Microsoft does not support Windows installed on partitions manipulated in this manner."

So it's just you and that Linux documentation. Good luck.

Now, I don't have any great love for Windows and I like Linux. I really do. I'm going to use it and learn a lot more about it.

But if you're a newbie like me, you'd best be warned. Searching various Linux forums finds a lot of users who have had problems uninstalling the OS and have lost data in the process.

Go back to Windoze? You're stupid
And while there are some helpful Linux aficionados who try to help these people out -- and others searching for uninstall help -- there are too many posters who take the attitude along the lines of: "Why would you want to uninstall Linux? That's crazy. You must be stupid to want to go back to Windoze."

If you want to try Linux out while keeping Windows, it's a real good idea to try it from a "live" Linux CD/DVD instead of installing it on a hard disk. Iâve tried several. The response is slower, of course, but you get an idea of how it works and donât risk losing anything. For Ubuntu the Wubi installer accomplishes the same thing by treating Ubuntu as a Windows application.

Do your homework
If you do install Linux on a disk, make sure you do a full system backup. And make sure you have a bootable "rescue" or "system" CD. And really do your homework. Read up on disk partitioning and logical volumes and extended partitions and mounts; and GRUB and LILO bootloaders; and NTFS, FAT 32 and ext3 file systems; and gparted and maybe the commercial app Partition Magic -- which supposedly merges/resizes partitions without destroying data -- and so on.

Then read it all again. And be careful our there.

How to test if ram is working on new build?

Q. Hi, I just finished building my new computer and I'm now keen to put an operating system on it. I chose Linux (because it's free) but just after the Linux screen appears freezes, it just goes to the loading screen and stays there. I'm wondering if the ram isn't working. Is it possible to test if my ram is working without an operating system? Like in the bios or something? Please Help, thanks.
No, the ram works so this question is a bit pointless now.

A. Take out all but 1 stick of ram. If that doesn't work, try another stick. If both of those sticks don't work, try ram from your old comp if it works (it should, as it worked in your old comp). Very often 1 stick of ram comes dead

How do I turn my PS3 to its normal state from the Linux Boot up?
Q. I have PS3 60 GB, and I have tried to install Linux. And when I have done, then I restarted my PS3. But when I did that, a black linux boot screen showed up instead of the the normal PS3 system. And when i am in that boot screen, it says that i have to install or just try out the Linux. How do get to the normal PS3 system from there?

A. 1. Turn the PS3 off (into standby).
2. Turn it on by holding the PS3's power button for about 5 seconds until you hear a second beep.
3. The PS3 will boot to the XMB OS and go back to default video settings.

Now that you're back in the PS3's XMB you can format the hard drive and remove linux (and its partition) from the hard drive. Back any PS3 game save files up before you do so, because they will all be deleted as well.

I have a windows operating system, I want to start a website.. Can i use a linux host on my OS? I'm sure i can

Q. Well, Planing on opening a video site. For people to upload videos..
And i was checking the host out . Linux hosting. I can use that on a MS machine correct?

A. You def can but I'm not sure if you can test a linux based website on a Windows based computer, locally... This may make it a bit hard to design ???

What should I know about Linux Hosting?
Q. If I use Linux Hosting, will I be able to use MS Publisher as a design template? If not, what design software do you recommend?

A. As a long time Linux geek, I have no love for anything made by Microsoft. Publisher is NOT a web design tool. Published is designed for making brochures, flyers, booklets, etc. The fact that you can convert a publisher file to an HTML format doesn't mean it's a web site tool. In fact, the HTML code rendered from Microsoft applications (yes, including FrontPage) is usually crap.

Their generated code contains a lot of proprietary stuff that's not standard in HTML, and it can cause problems between broswers.

here's what a Linux host usually has: Linux servers (Red Hat Linux is popular), Apache Web Server, MySQL for databases, and they usually support scripting languages like PHP and Perl. Some hosts will also provide support for Python and Ruby.

For web design, I always recommend a decent text editor that forces your to learn how to use XHTML and style sheets. once you have full control of how your content is built, you'll find yourself building much better web pages.

If you need a tool, try something called nVu. It's a free HTML editor that works on both Windows and Linux clients.

Learn to code in standard XHTML. Then, all your stuff will work for all clients, no matter what system you host on.

Whats the difference between Linux web hosting and Windows web hosting?
Q. Heya Please tell em what the difference is between linux web hosting and windows web hosting. I made my site by dreamweaver does that affect either of the 2 i should choose please tell me thanx!

A. Windows and Linux often use two different web server applications. Windows sites use the Windows IIS server, while nearly all Linux sites use Apache.

Linux sites focus on PHP, Perl and other open-source script languages for server side scripting. Windows-based sites use ,NET and ASP technologies. They might also offer support for PHP.

Linux sites offer MySQL as the database for backend content storage. Windows sites will probably offer SQL Server, though some offer the Windows versions of MySQL as well.

There shouldn't be any difference between the two if you use strict web standards in your HTML. However, you need to be aware of the fact that, since Dreamweaver is a Windows-only product, it may insert some non-standard things into your HTML. Frontpage also does this.

As long as you stick to accepted web standards and don't use any Windows-centric stuff in your site, you should have no problems with either one.

Issue CPU Running Linux Fedora 9 on VirtualBox?

Q. I have a host operating system of windows vista business 64 bit with 4g ram and an intel centrino 2 duo core a T9400. So i tried running Linux Fedora 9 x86_64 through virtual box but it says my cpu is an i686 and is not compatible. But intel centrino 2 should be 64 capable. Why isnt this working?

A. It is quite correct. The virtual CPU you were trying to run Fedora 9 on *is* an i686 and is not compatible. You were not installing Fedora on your physical CPU but on the virtual CPU that virtualbox creates.

Note that the 64-bit build of virtualbox won't help you. It still does the same thing, it just does it better on a 64-bit OS.

How do we set up internet in Linux Fedora?
Q. I have Linux Fedora 8 installed on my PC. I use ADSL Broadband connection, i.e. LAN to connect to the internet. How do we set up broadband ?

Please explain the steps in detail.
These answers don't work . . .
no more answers???

I want the detail !!!

A. Given that you imply you connect via ethernet to a router - just plug in the ethernet cable and let DHCP do it's work.

How can I install an operating system on a separate drive or partition?
Q. I am just a beginner, so please use a simple terminology.
By the way I have a Windows XP Home Edition and a Linux Fedora disk, if that matters.

A. I would suggest installing Fedora first and using Linux Partition manager. First you shard Partition X GB for Fedora and x GB i would also suggest that you create a third partition for fedora that is 256 MB for swap file space. The partition manager in Fedora is pretty self explanatory

Can i choose different alerts for different people on yahoo messenger?

Q. I saw this feature for a linux instant messenger software: you can select different alerts for different users. For example, if John goes online sound1 is played, but if Jane goes online, then sound2 is played. Is it possible to achieve the same results by using yahoo messenger (for windows)? Do you know any software (even if it runs as a separate process, it doesn't have to be integrated with yahoo messenger), or a plugin that does this?

A. if you're running v8, something you might want to check out is a new plugin (from the yahoo gallery) WackyB Spoken Status/Status Alert http://gallery.yahoo.com/apps/513/locale/en
" Status Alert gives you total control over the status alerts of your friends list.
⢠Configure individual sounds not only for each friend but also for each action (Online/Offline/Status Change/New message).
⢠Choose from a library of supplied sounds or select your own (Any sound type WAV/MP3/AVI/MPG/etc).
⢠Have the status changes of your friends read aloud to you by Peedy (MS Agent Character), Peedy will let you know when your friends come online and leave as well as message status changes.
⢠Last friends status change is shown in the main window along with their chosen image/avatar.
⢠A log is also kept so you can see if a friend has been online that you missed.
⢠Instantly mute all sounds from the main plugin window, Setup sound mute when you are busy/Idle etc.. "

How do I play a song through the entire presentation in open office impress?
Q. I'm trying to create a presentation involving a song playing through the entire impress presentation, but can not find where to set the number of slides that a song should play through... any help out there?

A. No, you can not do music across multiple slides in Impress. Supposedly version 2.3 was to have this fixed, but reading the programmers logs/comments about this issue leaves me in doubt, since other issues related will not be fixed until 2.4 - if ever. I have not been able to get 2.3 to do this - so...

There is a hack that works but is ugly. It goes something like this (except two of these lines get cut off by yahoo answers so you might have to do a google search on this.)
=====

OpenOffice.org 2 - How to put background music in presentation

Open your Impress Presentation
Tools > Macros > Organize Macros > OpenOffice.org Basic...
Under Macro from, click the name of your document to open the tree
Click Standard
Click New
Rename the new module or accept the default and click OK
In the Basic window that appears, substitute the text with your own Basic script. You can use the sample below, but substitute the actual paths on your computer.

Code:
REM ***** BASIC *****

'Impress - Play background music using an external player
'When activated from a mouse event during a slideshow,
'The external player does not show on the screen, however
'if activated from the design view, the external player pops up

Sub playBackgroundMusic

' For Linux
Shell ("/usr/bin/xmms",1,"/disks/zip.1/zip.1/m...

' For Windows
' Shell ("C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QuickTimePlayer.exe",1,"...

End Sub

Close the basic window.
In Impress design view, select the title of the first slide.
Slide show > Interaction...
Beside Action at mouse click, choose Run Macro
Click Browse...
Select the Library and the Macro name.
Click OK
Click OK
Start the slide show with Slideshow > Slideshow
Click the title you modified
Once the background music starts, you can advance the slides normally (hit the page down key or click the mouse outside of the title)

How do you Erase Ubuntu Lenix And install Windows Xp?
Q. I Have Ubuntu Linux on my computer i used to have Windows Xp, How do i remove Linux and put windows Xp Back on agian, I have the installation disc.
I cannot boot from Cd it will not let me

A. First off, let me tell you that you are going to regret installing Windows XP back on your computer unless you really need it. Ubuntu is a far superior operating system and the possibilities are almost endless.

Here is a guide my friend and I wrote for this:
I don't know your level of experience with computers, I will try to be as accurate as possible in the steps to take.

First you must take the obvious action of backing up your data and documents before you begin because everything will be erased afterwards. You can do this by either burning them onto discs or USB storage devices etc.

These are just general instructions that might seem a little inexplicit. I wont go in-depth because there's simply too many things to state.
All you have to do to begin is to pop the Windows XP Disc into your CD-ROM drive, and restart the computer with the disc still inside. Now here's where I might have a problem in helping you, normally it will say "Press any key to continue", if it says that, great then do it.
This is the part that will probably allow you to boot from the CD. ***If not, your BIOS might not have the proper boot order, which means that the computer might boot from your hard drive instead of the CD. In this case there has to be a key to press that gives you boot options, such as the F12 key in Dell BIOS's (Its usually one of the F-keys). It will come up when starting of the computer.

After choosing boot from CD-ROM in boot options, you will have to wait as the Windows disc loads and caches drivers and modules essential for the installation process, just looks like a big blue screen with words flashing at the bottom.
You will have to follow a set of questions by pressing the keys stated at the bottom of the blue screen to continue, such in the beginning when it tells you to press F8 if you agree with the license terms. Do this up until you come to a screen displaying your current hard drive configuration, stating all the partitions and what file systems each are formatted in
They will be in a rectangular box. If you computer is from a major computer manufacturer, you will have your current Windows XP partition and also a recovery partition. If you see a recovery partition, you can try to use that partition, by press another one of the F-key when your PC starts up. Otherwise, delete your current Windows XP partition by pressing the 'D' key on it. Then press 'C' on the "Unpartitioned Space". Then, type in the size of the partition and press Enter. If you don't know what size you need, just press Enter with the number that it is in there already. Then, you should return to the screen displaying all of your partitions. When you do, press Enter on the partition that you just created. Then, you will be shown a screen where you will be prompted to choose a filesystem. The main decision that you have to make here is which filesystem to use. NTFS is a newer filesystem and FAT32 is an older filesystem. The main difference between the two is that NTFS can store files that are bigger than 4GB. But, FAT32 also has an advantage: Most Linux operating systems cannot give you write access to NTFS partitions and therefore, you need to use NTFS.
So, you should select NTFS unless you use Linux, or there is another reason for selecting it. Also, be sure to choose the option that has (Quick) beside it. This will make a quicker format. If you have very important files on your hard disk, and you don't want anybody to be able to recover them, you should choose the option without (Quick) beside it. This will perform a full format.
The rest should be easy, setup will format the hard drive, then copy the contents of the CD on the hard drive. It will then restart the PC. DO NOT boot back into the CD. In other words, do not "Press any key" when the message pops up. The installation will continue with about five steps. It will ask you general questions during the installation such as time zone and country. Also, it will ask you for a serial number for Windows XP. You can find this on a sticker, which should be somewhere on the case of your PC. Look at the back or side of your tower for a colourful sticker that says Microsoft Windows XP. The serial number should be located on it. It is a series of alphanumeric characters. Or, if you purchased Windows XP separately, it should be on the box.
The rest of the setup should be very easy compared to what you have gotten through. Just follow the wizard and it will restart the computer into Windows XP. Then it will ask you a few more questions, before logging into the account that you created.

What are the benefits of using Google Chrome and what are the benefits of using Internet Explorer 9?

Q. My friend told me to switch over to Google Chrome, which i did. I am a Internet Explorer user and I upgraded Internet Explorer to version 9 and it seems like its the same as Google Chrome. What would be the benefits of the two?
Well internet explorer 9 too shows most visited web sites and is insanely fast lol. I guess one point would be security since internet explorer is a widely used browser.

A. Firefox 4 is even faster than IE and Chrome, over 9 million downloads in two days and it's available for Windows XP, which IE 9 isn't.

Chrome and IE isn't nearly as customizable as Firefox, Firefox has tens of thousands of add-ons, persona, themes etc.

Another great thing is it's available for Windows, OS X and Linux, one can auto-sync so all versions of Firefox are the same across different hardware. :)

Also with Firefox you don't have to worry if Microsoft, Apple or Google is spying on you, the code is open for people to see. (and improve on)

And Firefox with add-on's runs extremely fast on single core computers with 2.3 GHz and a mere 512K of RAM under Linux, so the "memory" issues is because of Windows bloat, PC vendor installed junk and anti-malware, not Firefox.

I use Windows in VM all the time, it always needs more memory than anything else I run. Nearly 2GB, that's with the eye candy turned way down. Just about all new Windows PC's today need their RAM bumped up right from the gate, especially after updating.

How do you get the task bar/start menu to stay when on google chrome?
Q. My taskbar is on auto-hide. Whenever on my desktop, it shows when i move the mouse to the bottom. But when i'm in google chrome, it won't show when i move to the bottom and it's really frustrating because i'm constantly switching between programs. How do I fix it w/o changing my taskbar to lock? I like it at auto-hide.

A. Are you using Microsoft Windows or Linux either a MAC? If you working on Windows this might be an issue with the system. Not with a Google Chrome whatsoever.

How can I make google chrome save more than 1 week of history?
Q. Like some option or add on that would allow chrome to save up to months of history would be awesome.

A. It actually saves the last 10 weeks and there is no way to change it.

This article applies to the Google Chrome browser on Windows, Mac, Linux, and Chromebooks.

Use the History page to view a list of websites you've ever visited in the last 10 weeks while using Google Chrome in standard mode. This page doesn't store pages from secure websites, those you've visited in incognito mode, or those you've deleted from your browsing history.

Are there any linux os that will run on an old laptop with a Linksys wireless card?

Q. I have a few Linux OS i have tried out and none of them worked with a Linksys wifi card. Can a Linksys wireless card work with Linux or is there another OS that will work with it and work on an old computer?
I am running on a very slow and old laptop Pentium 3 with original windows 98 installed on it.

A. Find what model card you have and see if it is supported, ie google ubuntu + card model. It may simply be a matter of installing the appropriate driver from the repository.

An alternative is to install ndiswrapper, if it isn't already installed, and use the .inf file from the XP drivers for the card, which you can download from the manufacturers website.

If the machine doesn't have at least 256 meg of ram then it won't be capable of web surfing.

The lightest full system to use would be puppy. Xpud is also worth a try, it is basically just a browser and a file manager. The best choice for a polished, configurable system would be lubuntu (ubuntu with the lxde desktop).

Cheers!

What Linux os is the best one to install on a computer?
Q. For people wanting to download media files on? And are all Linux os's free or atleast the good ones? Is there any point of me putting linux on my d drive so I can switch back and fourth from windows 7 to Linux?

A. Most Linux distributions aimed at home/office users are free.
There is no "best". This test will help you decide: http://www.zegeniestudios.net/ldc/
As you are probably a new linux user, I would recommend ubuntu or openSUSE. It can install and configure the GRUB loader for you, which is what you need to dual-boot windows and linux, and yes, you should definitely keep your windows installation.

BTW, All distros are able to download media files, most of them able to play them straight away (I would say all, but then there is Arch and Ubuntu Server ;)).

There's really no reason to think of which distro to choose for too much, most are quite similar. The only major differences between distros are the package managing systems and the pre-installed packages. Anotherdifference is, for example, that in Ubuntu, unlike Debian, you can not su root (=login as superuser) by default. (TTheoreticallyyou can make Debian look and behave exactly like Ubuntu with some configuration work, though.)

How do I install Windows on a Linux OS?
Q. I have the linux os and need windows to run a certain application. I've heard there's a way to have both operating systems simultaneously. How do you put windows on? I'd prefer to have both if possible.

A. This link explains how to set up a dual boot (have both linux and windows on the same computer). You will have to reinstall the linux bootloader after installing windows because the windows bootloader does not recognize linux.
Good luck

How can i make my Flash drive bootable?
Q. I have a USB 2.0 Flash drive with the Damn Small Linux ISO file on it, how can i make it so that my computer boots from my flash drive and then run linux?

A. To install it on a USB drive they have some very nice directions here:
http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/wiki/index.php/Installing_to_a_USB_Flash_Drive
http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/wiki/index.php/FAQ#How_Do_I_Install_to_a_USB_Pendrive.3F

But, you also have to turn on your computer's BIOS option for booting from USB devices, if your computers BIOS does not have this option you will not be able to boot that computer from a USB drive.

They also sell preinstalled USB drives:

How to invoke the Linux Terminal in LINUX when a process becomes unresponsive?

Q. If a process becomes unresponsive in WINDOWS then we press "alt+ctrl+del" to invoke the task manager & then terminate the process. Is there any similar way to invoke the Linux Terminal so that we can end a process by the 'kill' command when it becomes unresponsive?Any help would be gladly accepted.

A. Whether you are in an x-windows session or working at the console command line, an equivalent in Linux would be to select a new virtual terminal using the key sequence CTRL-ALT-F-Key.

For example, from the console, CRTL-ALT-F1 will open virtual tty1, if it has not been disabled by configuration. Once in the screen for the virtual terminal is displayed you can log in with appropriate permissions to use 'ps' to determine the process that you need to kill as you would normally do as indicated in your question. To return to the console use CTRL-ALT-F7.

For completeness, if you are at the command line you could begin a program by running it in the background, so you can do other things during it's execution. If a program that is running, but which is not in the background, is stuck your first step should be to try CTRL-Z, to terminate it. If that fails try a virtual terminal.

As has been suggested, you could also access the system remotely if you have other systems on the network that could be used. Doing so, requires appropriate services, such as 'sshd', be running in advance of the problem. Similarly, you should experiment with the virtual terminal feature in advance of a problem to assure that it has not been disabled and so you can see how it works.

How do I connect to my Linux computer?
Q. I want to be able to use some remote console to connect to my Linux terminal and send commands, what kind of server do I need? Is there a client for Windows?
I downloaded PuTTy but what server do I need? Midnight Commander is just a file manager, I need full access to my terminal.
Ok, I found telnetd. Thanks all !

A. if you just want to access a terminal session then configure SSH and use PuTTY to connect. If you want full control of your Linux desktop, then use VNC (comes in both Server and Client components and is cross platform - so yes, it does support Windows as a client)

In Ubuntu Linux what is the Terminal command to close a window?
Q. I have an application that opens at launch to allow me to use my Gamepad to control the mouse and arrow keys. This application also opens a window so I would like a terminal command that I can program to close the window at startup. Thank you.

A. Your question is worded a bit oddly but I think you're looking for System > Preferences > Startup Applications

=) hope that helps!

How do I install applications on Backtrack 2 Linux Distribution?
Q. Hi,

I just installed the Backtrack 2 Linux distribution and I am very newbiew at everything with Linux. So say i wanted to install the Pidgin instant message source. The file name is pidgin-2.2.2.tar.bz2. What exactly would i type in to unpack that file and then install it? And I am also interested in installing Wine. Could someone walk me through that as well?

A. http://forums.remote-exploit.org/showthread.php?t=7180
Try reading here. This distribution is based on slackware Linux and it CAN be difficult for beginners. If I were to recommend a distr for a "newbie" it'd be PCLinuxOS or Freespire. they're TRULY "newbie-friendly" distros.
Hope you have MANY years of fun and learning Linux!

Q. someone told me if i install backtrack linux, then i won't be able to install window 7 later i.e it change my all bios settings and i won't recover it later
Is it right or not please tell me soon.

A. It is wrong in that it does not touch your BIOS settings or do anything specifically to disable installing Windows 7. It is somewhat more difficult, but still possible, to install Windows 7 afterward. However, if you have both, you should install Windows 7 first for the easiest dual-boot setup.

How do I download flash to puppy linux?

Q. I have puppy linux on a computer, and I am trying to use a text messaging service through yahoo, but it says I must have flash installed to use it. When I follow the link, I am presented with 4 different filetypes to download. Which filetype do I need and what do I do with it?

Btw, I use SeaMonkey internet browser if that helps or changes anything.

A. The .tar.gz version

Here's how to install it:
Open a terminal and run:
wget http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player_10_linux.tar.gz

tar -xvzf install_flash_player_10_linux.tar.gz

cd install_flash_player_10_linux

./flashplayer-installer

Then follow the instructions it gives you. When it asks where you need to install it, respond: "/usr/lib/seamonkey"

How do I save Java on my remastered puppy linux live cd?
Q. I know how to down load Java and install on puppy linux 5.2 but how to you save it on the live cd so I don't have to download every time I restart.

A. Download the java.pet to the applications folder from the quickpet or where ever you download yours from. But don't install. After the download is complete remaster the live-cd.

Java will be waiting for you when ever you boot your live-cd. All you'll have to do is open the folder, click the pet and install. This is the only way to avoid re-downloading each time.

How does one run puppy linux in such a manner?
Q. I would like to keep a distro of puppy linux on a flash drive and I would like to keep all the downloads, applications, system files, boot sectors, etc. on the same flash drive so that it serves as a hard drive in a way.
Is there any way for me to do that?

A. Yes, it is a while since I ran puppy but when you first shut it down it should ask you where you want to create a file and if you select your flash drive thats where they will be

EDIT
I think what i did is install all the software I wanted and the did a 'full install' to a USB stick. This option is available in puppy somewhere

Puppy is very quick and great for recovering PCs and for browsing
I eventually moved to slitaz because puppy used to hang my router on shutdown and I get fed-up power-cycling the router

Hopefully some-one has done this more recently than me and has better recall - but I know it can be done pretty easily
