How do i connect to redhat linux server by using vncviewer even user is logged out?

Q. I successfully connect to the redhat linux server by using 3rd parties vncviewer. But when the user (root) user is logged out, i am unable to establish the connection again! Why, can anyone helps on this? Because i've tried to search on the web, cant find the solution... thanks a lot....
But when the user is logged out, it cant be connected, how?

A. To start the server on the linux box, as the user type:
$ vncserver
It will come back with something like "started server on localhost:1" (I can't remember the exact syntax - the bit you are interested in is the :1)
To connect to this from another computer (running windoze, linux or any other client) you must use the :1 bit too, ie connect to:
machinename:1
Because linux is a true multiuser environment you are able to launch multiple desktops, :1, :2, :3 etc. These go over ports 5901, 5902, 5903 etc. Windoze (not being multiuser) does not allow you to start a new desktop for a VNC session and only allows you the one which goes over port 5900 and is machinename:0

How can I have both Microsoft Windows XP Professional and RedHat Linux on my computer?
Q. I have Microsoft Windows Xp professinal on my computer and I want to install RedHat Linux. I don't want to miss Windows or any other of my informations. The problem is that GRUB( Linux's default boot loader) can't can't understand that I have Windows Xp on my computer. So if I install Linux on my computer I'll miss Windows. If you know a way, please tell me.

A. yeah it can be done its called dual booting heres how

http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-9-Manual/install-guide/ch-x86-dualboot.html

Change default boot to windows 7 instead of redhat Linux?
Q. I partitioned a small portion of my laptops hard drive to install redhat Linux, and when I start up my computer it is defaulting to Linux. How do I change this to windows 7?

A. You need to edit the GRUB configuration file. How to do this depends on whether you're using GRUB or GRUB2. If you actually installed RedHat Linux, which was discontinued in 2003, then you'd definitely be using GRUB. I think the recent versions of RedHat Enterprise Linux also still use GRUB. The link below should provide the information you need.

That said, why RedHat? RedHat Linux was discontinued in 2003, and there's little reason to purchase RHEL unless you're a business and need the support services. Fedora is essentially the same as RHEL, is sponsored by RedHat, and is free.

What Linux operating system can you use to install Windows-based software right away with no software used?

Q. For example, Ubuntu needs a program called Wine to install Windows-based software. So is there another Linux OS that can install them right away? And if so, whats the lowest Linux OS memory usage?

A. Linux is Linux, Windows is Windows, the code base are different so theres no such thing, if there were, one would think no one would buy Windows anymore wont you ?

Is there a free app to monitor your system activities on Windows 7?
Q. I would like to monitor my network activities, memory usage, and other processes.
Something like the activity monitor that Mac OS X and Linux have? Please and thank you :)

A. I'm not sure if this is what you mean but there is a task manager.
Press Ctrl>Alt>Delete then select start task manager
:)

How to measure the performance of an Linux C application?
Q. I have written a C code, which uses fread, fwrite,. I want to measure the performance like No_Of_Blocks read and written by the application. disk usage, memory usage etc. Is there any tool to measure the performance of an application in linux?

A. lets see:
You can measure CPU performance using /proc/cpu. You can measure ethernet performance by using /sbin/ifconfig <eth_port>. You can use df to track data written to a filesystem/mountpoint. Take a before and after snapshot using the tool of choice and determine the metric you wish to measure.

What is the corresponding free command on an AIX machine?

Q. I'm programming on a machine running IBM AIX version 6.1. I'm trying to profile the memory usage so I'm looking for a command similar to the free command on Linux distributions. Help

A. svmon and vmstat

How do you show the processes that are running in linux under a command line?
Q. And, how do you show how much memory and cpu each is using?

A. Check out the manpage for ps. The most common syntax is "ps auxww" which will show PID, CPU usage, Memory usage, process name, etc for each process that is running on your system. "top" shows real time information and ranks processes by their CPU/RAM usage.

What slows down computers besides memory usage?
Q. I just deleted a whole lot from my laptop, and I ran a 'defragmentation' on the hard-drive, but it's still going really slow. Any ideas?
More detail: It's slow to open programs or new windows. There's a delay between when I click an icon and when the window opens.

A. Are you familiar with the Task manager? (Ctrl+Alt+Delete) The task manager will show you which processes are using you processor power and how much virtual memory.

What version of Windozes? Have you tried using a registry cleaner? Do you have a reliable anti-virus?

When I used to use Windozes, I had to wipe it about every 6 months and start over. It just seemed to get unstable after prolonged use. I now use Ubuntu Linux.

scp files from my school computer to my home computer?

Q. I just purchased an iMac for my home office and I want to copy files from my Linux machine at school to my iMac at home. My iMac is on a wireless router. I open up a terminal and use ssh, but I'm having issues copying files over. I tried scp filename username@home_ip_address:~ but it doesn't work. Any suggestions?

A. on your imac:
scp your_school_account@ \
your_school_machine:/home/juan/filename .
(two lines because Yahoo Answers didn't display it right)

or Charlie Kelly's method:
sftp your_school_account@your_school_machine
get filename

another option is to use a GUI if you prefer:
download Cyberduck, a free FTP client for Macs

How would you go about this linux task?
Q. 1. I must grep through executable scripts, but they don't end in .doc or .exe tag

2. the grep signature will be "rcp" other remote commands so I can change them secure commands like "scp"

Is there any way I could do this in Linux and using Perl?

A. find . -type f -perm /u+x -exec grep -l -w rcp {} \;

Find regular files starting at the current directory which are executable by the owner. When found grep on whole words of "rcp", but display only the file names.

If you really want to replace "rcp" with "scp" in all cases (not recommended because that is too sweeping), then add a sed loop. Something like this:

find . -type f -perm /u+x -exec grep -l -w rcp {} \; | while read NAME; do cat $NAME | sed -e 's/rcp /scp /g' > .tmp.$$ ; mv .tmp.$$ $NAME; done

Be SURE to test that thoroughly before trying that last bit.

How do I turn my Ubuntu/Linux PC into a server for my Windows 7 PC?
Q. Is this a good idea? Will my Windows PC get extra protection since I will be going on the Internet using the Ubuntu as a server, as an intermediary? How difficult is it to do this?

A. This question is pretty poorly designed. There is no "Server for windows" in Linux. You can do several things with linux and connect/use them from windows though. You can make linux a firewall and router, connect it to your cable/dsl modem so you can have multiple computers use your internet connection at one time. You can run web, ftp, and other servers for files and web pages. You can also run Samba which allows you to access and store files on the linux hard driver over the network. linux also makes a GREAT extension to your windows environment using things like xdmcp, rdp, ssh, scp. if you do not know what any of these terms are, google is your buddy. You can also set up a web proxy using linux and this could definitely be used to increase your web browsing security in windows by blocking malicious web sites. Pretty much anything you want to do with Linux is limited by you and your willingness to learn.

Nothing is simple click and go in linux. You have to be willing to experiemnt, read, and learn.

What are the requirements to use Linux From Scratch?

Q. Do I need a linux os to run it?
Is there any third party software I need?
Is LFS a programming language?

What can I do to get the code if I were to base it off of Ubuntu?

A. To get started, all you need is a lot of free time. Go to linuxfromscratch.org and start reading the book and follow the instructions. The prerequisites are listed in there. It will also point to the downloads you need. LFS is not a programming language, it is just the book which lists how to install Linux entirely from sources.

Is there a way to hook up an old hard drive to my laptop?
Q. I'm going to start on a Linux from Scratch and I need to hook up an old 40 GB HDD that was in an old computer that I had a long time ago. I was wondering if there was anyway that I could hook it up through USB to my laptop. There's a whole lot of writing on the disk, so if you need any of it to figure it out, then I will add extended details.

A. Get a USB adapter or a HD caddy.

Where to start for becoming a linux master?
Q. I have ubuntu 8.10 installed on my macbook and I am familiar with the gui as well as other desktop environments. But, I have no clue how to program, what a source code is, or how to build my own linux distro from scratch. I do know how to install several operating systems, how to partition a hard drive, and how to install hardware. I'd like to be a programmer someday and I want to know where to start. Thanks!
I don't like kde at all.

A. Check this out:
http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/

It guides you through building a distro from scratch.

Source code is basically the "recipe" to a program. A compiler converts source code to binary.

KDE wasn't my preferred desktop environment at first either, but as I started using it and discovered how much more configurable it is and found some of it's unique features (that the other DE's don't have), it became my favorite desktop environment.

But if you want to learn more about Linux, try using a distro that doesn't try to emulate Windows. Using slackware has taught me a lot.

why is the UK version of yahoo home page defaulting to mobile in Linux versions of chrome?

Q. I'm using Ubuntu both i386 and 64bit and the latest version of chrome downloaded from Google its happening on several machines I'm using. Is there some kind of global account setting that would do this?

A. Does it happen when you are logged out or only when logged in?

Have you tried clearing your cache?

If it happens only when you login, it is an account setting.

If it goes away after clearing your cache, you may have visited a link to the mobile site and a cookie got set for it.

If it is happening when you are logged out and you have cleared your cache, it is probably related to your user agent.

You could use the following command to change your user agent to that of an IE9 browser:

google-chrome --user-agent="Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; MSIE 9.0; Windows NT 6.1; Trident/5.0)"

If this fixes it, which it should, you would want to check your current user-agent and see if there is anything weird about it. Changing your user agent should only be a temporary solution, it can cause problems long term.

How to make a terminal executable file?
Q. If I wanted to run a command on either Mac or Linux by the click of a button (opening a file), what would I do? I'm looking for a Mac/Linux version of a .bat file.

A. Linux has shell scripts which are typically written in SH files. Since Macintosh and Linux are both based on Unix, I suppose Macintosh probably has exactly the same thing.

How do I run a web browser from linux command line?
Q. I an VERY new to linux. I have installed Fedora 5 in text mode. I have a Linux book and am trying to slowly learn linux. So from the console, or command line, how do I run a web browser. Also how do I run the X Windows System?

A. If you installed in text mode, maybe you didn't install X. You probably have a text mode browser. Try lynx or elinks. If the startx command doesn't work, try "yum install x-window-system". By the way, Fedora 5 is old. The current version of Fedora is 9.

How can I install and replace the new Ubuntu Linux?
Q. Hello everyone !
I have Ubuntu Linux version 9.04 installed in one partition of my laptop. There's a newer better version that has just been released (10.04) And I want to install it, but at the same time replace the old one completely with the new installation.
What is the best way to do this ? The way that it's less error-prone, or the easiest way.

Note. I have Windows installed as well and I use GRUB for dual booting.

A. Ubuntu 10.04 at present is unstable

For the time being I would suggest staying with Ubuntu 9.04 or perhaps an upgrade to Ubuntu 9.10 both of which are fine releases

Looking For a Good Free Linux version for kids, that can run without a hard drive?
Q. My niece other uncle(on her father side) gave her old computer, it doesn't run. But thats not the reason I ask, I have a smaller old internet computer, that I feel will be better for her(as I am her mother's bother, and it has a less energy drain then the old Dell has). My niece is only five years old, and all she needs it for is playing games, and doing pre-school work or something.

The linux version should run from a CD, so it must be a small installation, it also should be kid friendly.
ubuntu I would like, as it is nice, and it has the look and feel of windows, but its to large for a cd, maybe several cds, or a Live DVD, but not a cd. The computer had a linux based cd, but it got loss down the line, and it was old, so anything that will run on a CD, that easy to install first off, because i tried to use Damn Small, but I didn't understand the installation process
Thank you basilb101, for clearifing, I thought Mr. Micro was misspelling ubuntu

A. I like the suggestion of Edubuntu but it is a big download/install and liveCD will slow the computer down, i would suggest an install of edubuntu or puppy linux (under 150MB), maybe you could splash out on a IDE compact flash card?
Puppy linux is never truly installed it just moves files from the disk/flash drive to the ram it needs 128MB (i think!) or else a hdd for virtual memory
EDIT; ubuntu/kubuntu/edubuntu/xubuntu are all availabl on a single dvd which would be alot faster than a 700MB download but i don't think edubuntu is available on CD

What is the difference between Windows and Linux Servers?

Q. In not too technical terms - what is the difference between thse two? If I were to use .net nuke , is there a perference over which server I should use?

A. Wow! This is a question that pops up all over the web, and one that I had myself as a web services person. You can read a lot about the differences - as well as the advantages of one over the other. In the sources area, I've listed several such discussions and articles, including the last item which is a lengthy discussion in a Wikipedia article on the subject. In terms of finding something non-technical, I would recommend the first site.

The article from AskWebHosting.com states the following about using .net: "If you intend to create your site using ASP, FrontPage, the .NET environment, Windows Streaming Media, Access, MSSQL, or any of the other Microsoft proprietary technologies then you probably need to use a Windows host. There is limited support for a number of these technologies in Linux, but they can be expensive and are usually lacking in features."

But you're talking about using DotNetNuke, which is an open source answer to .NET. As such, it may not matter at all, from that standpoint, which option you choose.

I hope that these sources are helpful!

What is the common place to mount a network drive in linux.?
Q. I have a Ubuntu server that I hope to use to share files to my roommates using Samba. I know I can mount the drive anywhere and then share it but is there a common place that it shold be mounted?

A. With Ubuntu most drives (other than the obvious /, /boot, /home, etc.) are mounted under /media, but it really doesn't matter.

Playstation 3 as a Media Center Extender, how can it read my networked external hard drive?
Q. I use my PS3 as a media extender. However it only reads the pictures, music and movies in my documents in Vista Home Premium. I have a Network attached storage unit with Gigs of music, movies and pictures. How can I get my PS3 to read those files without having them stored locally on my computer. Or even if there is a unit that can do that. Thank you in advanced.

A. There are a couple of things you can do:
* Set up a UPnP (universal plug and play) server on your computer that will be detected by your PS3 (this is what I do)
* Move all those files to a USB Drive then plug that into your PS3 (this will remove the files from your computer but not take up all the space on your PS3, plus you can get cheap USB drives with lots of space (300GB+) now days)
* Look into getting a file server for both your PS3 and Computer. A small Linux box would work best for this and they have models on ThinkGeek.com

Any advice on starting a webhosting and computer consulting business?

Q. I have a friend of mine who has offered to set me up with a linux-based VPS, and was thinking of starting a webhosting business with this? In addition I was thinking about doing some consulting like setting up servers for small businesses, setting up home wireless networks, and PC repair? Any advice?

A. I have been self-employed as a systems engineer for over 3 years and the best advice I ever got was don't undervalue your services. It is much easier to give discounts than it will be to raise your rate in the future. Bill for every minute you work and then add lines to your invoice like "New customer discount" or give them a discount if the hit a certain number of hours each month/quarter/year. Be confident in your skills and what they are really worth. Don't give it away. Let them know why you are giving them a discount. The second best advice I got was "A value that is not recognized is no value at all." In other words, if your clients don't know that you are doing something special for them they will come to expect it. List everything you do on your invoice. The final advice is to form a LLC or a business entity that will separate your work from your personal life. If for some reason a client wants to take legal action they will have to take it towards your "company" not you. They cannot go after your personal possessions. Self-employment is awesome! I will never go back to working for the "man". I wish you the best of luck.
I hope this helps.

How to use linux centos terminal basicly?
Q. i have free vps by Host1Free and centos installed. Ok i want to niow how to upload, delete, rename, move, copy, list files using putty when o connect remotelt. To say this simply: i want terminal commands to manage files.

How to have linux VPS keep running java server?
Q. I have the server an all working.
Minecraft server actually.
But I noticed the server will stop when I close my putty the server will server aswell.
How do I get it to constantly run? Even if my computer is off or not

A. one way would be to use nohup. just start your program with something like:
nohup ./yourprogram
that will keep the program alive, even when you log out. but this will not work with programs that take input from the console.
another way is to use a screen session (if screen is installed). with the command "screen" you start a shell session in which you can then start programs. if you press ctrl+a, ctrl+d (in that order), the session gets detached and will continue after you log out. after logging in, you can resume the session with "screen -r sessionname".
for more informations, try "man screen" or "man nohup".

How to find my Linux System Information?

Q. I know how to find it on Windows. But how do I find my system information on Linux Operating system. Thanks.

A. Open the command prompt, it might be known as Terminal. The following commands will allow you to find your system information.

df Shows disk free space.
duShows disk usage.
freeDisplay used and free memory on the system.
ipcrmProvide information on ipc facilities.
ipcsSame as ipcrm.
lsdevDisplay information about installed hardware via files in the /proc directory.
lsofList open files.
lspciList PCI devices .
pnpdumpLists ISA plug and play devices resource information.
procinfoDisplay system status gathered from proc.
pstreeDisplay a tree of processes.
runlevelFind the current and previous system runlevel.
straceTrace ssytem calls and signals for a binary program.
sttyChange and print terminal line settings.
tloadPrints a graphic representation of the system load average.
ttyPrint the filename of the terminal connected to standard input.
unamePrint system information, Prints Linux.

Knowing what distribution you use would be helpful. If you need more help I'd recommend looking at the website of the distribution you use.

Should install Linux and get rid of Windows Vista?
Q. Ok So I have a laptop and have Installed Windows Home Premium; I am wondering what is Linux? I do not know yet but I am wondering if I should install Linux and un-install Windows Vista? Please, someone Help, Should I? Which one is Better?

A. Linux Ubuntu +++++++++++

I am so glad to get rid of the intrusiveness of Windows Vista. Linux belongs to the user. not the other way around. No agreements to sign, no automatic updates that pull the rug out from under your feet, so you are forced to buy new computers. No need for expensive protection systems. It is like having a brand new computer. After having most of my memory wasted with access systems, and then finding out that they not only did not work, but just took up space, and then being denied access to get rid of them.......

You can load Ubuntu through your Windows system and try it out for free, as a separate operating system on the same computer. If you are not impressed. Just delete it. Try doing that with Window. Windows is in charge of your usage with it's system. You are in charge of your system with Ubuntu, Lenox.

If you get the disc, which is absolutely free, including postage, you can erase windows and all of it's quirks from your computer, and have ten times as much memory available with the same number of programs.

What Norton Antivirus product should I buy for protecting 6 server machines running windows 2003?
Q. I'd rather run Linux but.. some government people, probably don't know much about computers at all, are forcing us to use Windows.

They want Norton protecting all of them, despite only two of the machines being externally visible.

A. There is a corporate version of Norton Antivirus that has a much smaller memory/cpu usage footprint than the normal retail versions. Its just Symantec Antivirus 11.0. However, they now call it Symantec Endpoint Protection. I'd go with that to keep it simple.

How do I install programs on linux? Thanks

A. http://monkeyblog.org/ubuntu/installing/

Check tha above link to install program in ubuntu.

Program in linux are avaliable in many format like
1>source format (i.e. programming lanaguage), you have to complie to install it. Not for newbie like you. itis compress format like tar, .gz etc. This i think you are clicking, which open new windows to show extracted files etc.

2> .deb, .rpm format, it is format for debian or redhat linux which can installed by their package manager

3>the most easy and best method for beginner is to use ubuntu package manager, search for program , let it download and then install.

System â Administration â Synaptic Package Manager

What is the most popular form of the linux operating system today?
Q. I knew about RedHat but not sure whether that is still in service?

A. 1 Ubuntu
2 Fedora
3 openSUSE
4 Mint
5 Debian
6 Mandriva
7 PCLinuxOS
8 Puppy
9 Sabayon
10 Arch

This is the list from http://www.distrowatch.com which states the most downloaded distros out there. Granted these are just desktop distros and I expect that both Debian and RHEL (Red Hat) make up the majority of the Linux servers out there.

How can I change the size of my Ubuntu Linux screen to fit my laptop monitor?

Q. My Ubuntu screen is too small and I don't know how to change the screen size to fit the monitor.

A. System -> Administration -> Monitor

how can i copy text from windows and paste in in linux 'screen' shell?
Q. I want to run my matlab code in linux 'screen' program. and im not sure how to do that. I initiate screen, and then write matlab -nodisplay. so the matlab starts. however, im not sure how can i run my code in it. shal i just copy paste my code in the shell? how?

A. Save your code as a .m file (for example your_code.m)

Copy the .m file into the Linux directory you are launching Matlab from
OR
lanch Matlab and cd into the directory where you put the .m file

Run your code by typing the name of the .m file into Matlab command window. So if your code is called 'your_code.m', ou'd type 'your_code' into Matlab and it will run.

The .m file can be a function with a return value, or it can be a script with just a list of commands.

How to Change The Puppy Linux Screen Size?
Q. I don't mean it make fullscreen or something. At the set-up screen I picked the wrong xxxx*xxxx pixels formatting, and I don't know how to change it.

A. Try:
Menu
...Setup
......Xorg Video wizard

Or Xvesa Video Wizard if you are using Xvesa - but don't worry if you don't know whether you are using Xorg or Xvesa, just try either and it will tell you if that is the wrong one.
.... but you are probably using Xorg unless it's a very old computer, so you will most likely see the 'Resolution changer' option in the Xorg Video Wizard and that should do what you want.
(or you can run the full wizard to set up all the Xorg or Xvesa settings)
I hope that makes sense! Good luck.
If you have problems, ask on the Puppy Linux forums and someone will help you.

What is the difference in the Linux downloads for Python and which should I get?

Q. I am currently running Ubuntu 10.10(Maverick Meerkat) and do not know which Python download is appropriate. Please help.

A. Ubuntu 10.10 uses python 2.6.6

Why is my bandwidth limited so much in windows?
Q. I have been switching between linux and windows for a while now while I learn a little bit more about linux to where I can make a perminant switch.

When using Linux my download speeds would get up to the 900KBPS speed they are supposed to but in windows it is limited to a very sad 100KBPS for no good reason.

Is there a way to fix this problem?

This is with a fresh windows install (about an hour ago) so its not bugged.

A. Are you using a download manager of some sort?

I'm not sure how Linux works but some download managers (IDM) are really good. They are able to download the file in parts which means that you're downloading at probably 5 or 6 times the normal speed.

Downloading through a browser just downloads the file as a whole and this takes a lot longer.

how do i install itunes 10 on linux ubuntu?
Q. I've used wine and play on linux to download the application, but it just isn't working. Every time I click on the application to open it doesn't open up. Does anyone know what I can do to make it work.
itunes seven is working just fine, but I don't want the old version i want the newer version.

A. I love it when people respond to questions, and have no idea what there talking about.

First make sure you have an up to date copy of WINE and POL, I know the POL in the Ubuntu repos is the older version (at least last time I checked) Same goes for WINE. Make sure your running if from either the WINE menu, or from POL directly. If you just double click the EXE it will run without the switches, and may not work at all. If your doing all of this I'd suggest a complete PURGE not removal of WINE and POL. Don't use Software center, use apt-get. Software center will only remove them

#sudo apt-get purge wine
#sudo apt-get purge playonlinux
#sudo apt-get autoremove
#sudo apt-get autoclean

Make sure there's no hidden folders in your home folder (with a . in front of them) referencing WINE or POL. Alt+H will show them

Download POL from them directly, don't install from the Ubuntu repos. (Current Ver is 3.8.12)
http://www.playonlinux.com

POL Is dependent on WINE, so it will be installed automatically, so will the MS fonts. It should work fine after that.

Banshee has come a long way, not really a need to run iTunes in Linux anymore. I just installed it to see what would happen and it appeared to run fine, imported my music library and played them fine, connected to my ipod etc. You results should be the same. I still like Native software when possible.

Vector linux faster than windows 2000 or 95?

Q. Just how fast is vector? Will it run quickly on a computer with 450 megahertz 120 mb of ram and a 10 gig hdd. It is currently running 2000 and takes 10 minutes to fully load. And will I have problems installing? Is dial up internet possible with vector linux. Thanks for any answers!

A. i THINK vector will run on that but i'm not guaranteeing it. IF it runs, you will need a large swap partition (minimum 1G) and i'm not sure if dial up is possible anymore. it's getting harder and harder to find linux distros with dialup anymore and vector ain't one of the mainstream ones so odds are no. (but with linux, where there's a will, there's a way... with lots of help from google)

Can I set up my system as a dual-boot with Vector Linux and Windows 98?
Q. I have a computer running Win 98, and would like to run Vector Linux. Can I set it up as a dual-boot system safely?

A. Yes but you will need a boot loader like boot magic. You can download freeware and shareware at tucows.com. You can also try to use the same process that Redhat linux suggests. here is their link http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-7.1-Manual/custom-guide/dualboot.html

How to install Vector Linux ?
Q. I downloaded vector Linux from the website. After opening it with WinRar I could not find the installer. i have made a separate partition. How do I install the OS ?

A. Is it an .iso? If so you have to burn it to a disk CD or DVD! Burn as an image! Then boot from that!

How can I get an introduction as to how Linux is used in Embedded Applications?

Q. I wish to have a dive (not swim very deep though) into Embedded Linux.
Are there any good resources on the internet that you would like to recommend?
Please note that I know the C language inside out and have also done micro-controllers programming even though it was without any RTOS.

A. See the guide here: http://www.scratchbox.org/documentation/general/tutorials/introduction.html

Where is the best source to have a custom hardware device designed and built?
Q. I am looking for a resource or a tech shop to custom design and build a hardware device to my specifications with embedded Linux. Where is the best place to find a firm who designs custom hardware devices?

A. You can TRY this place. I don't know if they'll do you any good or not but it's a start:

http://www.directron.com/contact.html

I just called them, myself, to see if they offered the services you describe, but they're in Texas and it's 8:45 pm there right now!...and they're closed.

I hope this helps. Good luck!

How do I install python libraries?
Q. I have an embedded Linux device that is running an embedded version of python for it. The scripts I'm trying to run work great on my computer but wont run on the embedded Linux device. I looked into the matter further and found that two modules I am using, threading and signal, are not included in the embedded version of python. They are (I think) part of the standard python library. How can I get these modules and install them separately. I don't think I can put the standard python onto my embedded Linux device.

A. The module threading is a module located in the Lib directory (standard installation). You could try to place this file in corresponding location on your device. Signal is a built-in module. I suspect its platform-dependent and maybe not (yet?) implemented for your device. If your platform is windows CE for example, signal is not implement in the win CE version of python

How do I boot Backtrack with VMware?

Q. I've downloaded Backtrack Linux, and I've set it up with VMware. When I go to boot it, I've tried it in text mode and safe mode, but I just get the message:
This kernel requires an x86-64 CPU, but only detected an i686 CPU. Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU.
How can I fix this, or get it to boot?

A. The problem is that you have selected to download it as 64-bit. That's too much for the CPU to handle, so you must download 32-bit, when you're on the Backtrack website. I selected, Gnome, 32-bit, ISO, Direct- as my options. And then when I was setting it up, I used Linux OS, then, Other Linux 2.6.x kernel. This fixed everything.

PS, This is actually Flame Sword on another account. I figured out how to fix it, and I wanted to put the correct answer up here for other people to refer to. Thank you!

How to type password in BackTrack 4 Linux LOGIN?
Q. I burned Backtrack 4 Linux [Final Release] to a DVD and than i type "login" than enter "root" than I try to enter "toor" but here's the thing, NO KEY REGISTERS INTO IT [as in can't type anything in] I tried this on 2 different computers but same issue, what do i do?

A. you could also boot into linux at a 'lower level' (text only login) which should resolve also.

ctrl + alt then try numbers 1 - 7 until you get lower level. After logging in successfully, run 'startx'

How to actively switch between two OS's in a dualboot partition setup?
Q. I'm dualbooting backtrack and Linux mint KDE 9. Is there a way to switch between the two partitions without having to completely reboot and go through the GRUB menu?

A. Unless you have some sort of virtual machine software you have to reboot so the operating system can have control of the hardware.

How to put 2moons onto linux ubuntu?

Q. I have a question, i tried to install 2moons onto linux with wine, everything worked untill the end, nothing installed. Is there some other software or a way i have to run it through terminal to make it work?

A. if at all there was any possibility through wine, crossover would have done it. But looks like it doesn't work with crossover (http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?forum=1;app_id=3562;mhl=28643;msg=28625)

So u can try running it in a windows inside Virtualbox. But directX may not work that great.

Can Windows viruses run in a Linux OS through Wine?
Q. I have Linux Mint 7 Gloria, and I tested a malicious script (fork bomb) to see if it would adversely effect the computer, and it did crash. Could other malicious scrips meant to harm Windows harm Linux in Wine? If so, should I consider installing virus protection in Wine?

A. The way Wine works, it create a software version of Windows within Linux. A Windows virus might be able to run without that environment (assuming the files it attacks are being simulated in Wine). However as soon as you stop Wine, you would kill the virus. When you reload Wine the virus would not longer be working. (Assuming you are not running Wine as Root).

How do you boot to linux on windows?
Q. Is there a program that allows you to create a virtual desktop, to access the ext3 linux OS? I know there's vmware to do the opposite on linux, and wine.

A. To use Linux within Windows I would recommend installing VirtualBox http://www.virtualbox.org/ it creates a virtual machine within your PC. Its a great piece of software being versatile and easy to use. I work with it all the time for testing various Linux distros.

LUg.

How do i run installed programs on linux debian and how to install a gui without internet?

Q. Am new to linux and i dont have any gui installed. I would like 2 know which website 2 go 2, 2 download the gui and how do i install it after downloading. And how do i run installed programs such as python?

A. I'm a Linux n00b too, and I've gotten help at the majorgeeks.com forums.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/

> Linux support forum @ majorgeeks: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=50

Whats the difference between Linux and Windows?
Q. Whats the difference between Linux and Windows?
Would you highly reccomend Linux?
What are some of the features?

A. 1: Full access vs. no accessHaving access to the source code is probably the single most significant difference between Linux and Windows. The fact that Linux belongs to the GNU Public License ensures that users (of all sorts) can access (and alter) the code to the very kernel that serves as the foundation of the Linux operating system. You want to peer at the Windows code? Good luck. Unless you are a member of a very select (and elite, to many) group, you will never lay eyes on code making up the Windows operating system.

#2: Licensing freedom vs. licensing restrictionsAlong with access comes the difference between the licenses. Iâm sure that every IT professional could go on and on about licensing of PC software. But letâs just look at the key aspect of the licenses (without getting into legalese). With a Linux GPL-licensed operating system, you are free to modify that software and use and even republish or sell it (so long as you make the code available). Also, with the GPL, you can download a single copy of a Linux distribution (or application) and install it on as many machines as you like. With the Microsoft license, you can do none of the above. You are bound to the number of licenses you purchase, so if you purchase 10 licenses, you can legally install that operating system (or application) on only 10 machines.

#3: Online peer support vs. paid help-desk supportThis is one issue where most companies turn their backs on Linux. But itâs really not necessary. With Linux, you have the support of a huge community via forums, online search, and plenty of dedicated Web sites. And of course, if you feel the need, you can purchase support contracts from some of the bigger Linux companies (Red Hat and Novell for instance).

However, when you use the peer support inherent in Linux, you do fall prey to time.
On the other side of the coin is support for Windows.

#4: Full vs. partial hardware supportOne issue that is slowly becoming nonexistent is hardware support. Years ago, if you wanted to install Linux on a machine you had to make sure you hand-picked each piece of hardware or your installation would not work 100 percent. I can remember, back in 1997-ish, trying to figure out why I couldnât get Caldera Linux or Red Hat Linux to see my modem. After much looking around, I found I was the proud owner of a Winmodem. So I had to go out and purchase a US Robotics external modem because that was the one modem I knew would work. This is not so much the case now. You can grab a PC (or laptop) and most likely get one or more Linux distributions to install and work nearly 100 percent. But there are still some exceptions. For instance, hibernate/suspend remains a problem with many laptops, although it has come a long way.

With Windows, you know that most every piece of hardware will work with the operating system. Of course, there are times (and I have experienced this over and over) when you will wind up spending much of the day searching for the correct drivers for that piece of hardware you no longer have the install disk for. But you can go out and buy that 10-cent Ethernet card and know itâll work on your machine (so long as you have, or can find, the drivers). You also can rest assured that when you purchase that insanely powerful graphics card, you will probably be able to take full advantage of its power.

#5: Command line vs. no command lineNo matter how far the Linux operating system has come and how amazing the desktop environment becomes, the command line will always be an invaluable tool for administration purposes. Nothing will ever replace my favorite text-based editor, ssh, and any given command-line tool. I canât imagine administering a Linux machine without the command line. But for the end user â not so much. You could use a Linux machine for years and never touch the command line. Same with Windows. You can still use the command line with Windows, but not nearly to the extent as with Linux. And Microsoft tends to obfuscate the command prompt from users. Without going to Run and entering cmd (or command, or whichever it is these days), the user wonât even know the command-line tool exists. And if a user does get the Windows command line up and running, how useful is it really?

#6: Centralized vs. noncentralized application installationThe heading for this point might have thrown you for a loop. But letâs think about this for a second. With Linux you have (with nearly every distribution) a centralized location where you can search for, add, or remove software. Iâm talking about package management systems, such as Synaptic. With Synaptic, you can open up one tool, search for an application (or group of applications), and install that application without having to do any Web searching (or purchasing).

Windows has nothing like this. With Windows, you must know where to find the software you want to install, download the software (or put the CD into your machine), and run setup.exe o

How do i run installed programs on linux debian and how to install a gui without internet?
Q. Am new to linux and i dont have any gui installed. I would like 2 know which website 2 go 2, 2 download the gui and how do i install it after downloading. And how do i run installed programs such as python?

A. The two biggest players in the game are Gnome and KDE. You need to decide what gui you are going to use and download that to a flash drive, DVD, or ect. Next use command gzip to unpack it. Use website http://ss64.com/bash/ for Linux commands and http://www.gzip.org/ for info on gzip which is what the packer probably is. After getting the GUI on ur pc, run command Startx, if no luck use
/etc/init.d/gdm start for gnome desktop and /etc/init.d/kdm start for the kde desktop. Still nothing? Hang in there. Ask a hacker.

What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages to a computer buyer when using one of the?

Q. free operating systems such as google chrome or linux rather than using windows?

A. Windows - people are more accostmed to using windows, it is the business preferred OS.
Linux - Ubuntu - less then user friendly to configure and setup, but stable.
Chrome - new, never used it myself, can't make any suggestions on it....

How do I block websites on my computer?
Q. I use Google Chrome. On a linux machine, though I doubt that's relevant.

This ear I am taking 8 different senior highschool courses, and I have a habit of aimlessly looking for funny things on the internet. I need to block my favorite websites until I'm in good habits. Like putting a padlock on the fridge when you know your weakness.

A. First of all âhostsâ is the name of the file not the folder. Please refer to the screenshot above.

Ok, letâs start from the first step. When you typed
notepad %windir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts in the run command, were you not able to see the file named âhostsâ getting opened in notepad?

If not, then copy the hosts file from other computer to your targeted computer at the location %windir%\system32\drivers\etc

How do you get the task bar/start menu to stay when on google chrome?
Q. My taskbar is on auto-hide. Whenever on my desktop, it shows when i move the mouse to the bottom. But when i'm in google chrome, it won't show when i move to the bottom and it's really frustrating because i'm constantly switching between programs. How do I fix it w/o changing my taskbar to lock? I like it at auto-hide.

A. Are you using Microsoft Windows or Linux either a MAC? If you working on Windows this might be an issue with the system. Not with a Google Chrome whatsoever.
