How to cut and paste something in Linux, using the terminal?

Q. How do I go about cutting something in one directory and placing it into another directory in the terminal?
What are the "commands" (not sure if that's what they're called) and what are their arguments? I would appreciate anyone with helpful information's assistance.

Thank-you.

A. 1) If you are talking about copying text from the terminal, you can copy with ctrl+shift+C, and paste with shift+insert (might be 'ins' on the keyboard).

2) I'm assuming that you are actually talking about moving, or copying files in your computer. Here are some basic commands;
ls - lists files in the current dictory

[john@Aaarch ~]$ ls
43375-coolarch.png 64roms Desktop
[john@Aaarch ~]$

cd - change dictory

[john@Aaarch ~]$ cd ./Desktop/
[john@Aaarch Desktop]$

cd ./ will let you change to a subdictory within the dictory you are already in. cd / will change to a dictory from the beginning of the filesystem. cd /home/john/Desktop is would be the same as cd ./Desktop, if I are already located in /home/john. To move to /home/john, my home dictory, I could also use cd ~/.
so, I could also do cd ~/Desktop, because "Desktop" is a subdictory within /home/john. If you login as another user, you will have a different home dictory, and to change to john's dictory, you will have to use cd /home/john. Home dictories are usually located in the /home dictory.

Another feature is to move up to the parent dictory with cd.
[john@Aaarch Desktop]$ cd ../
[john@Aaarch ~]$ ls
43375-coolarch.png 64roms Desktop
[john@Aaarch ~]$
Simply type cd ../

To switch to another user, you would use su. Don't worry, this will only effect the terminal use issue su on, and you can always switch back.
To switch to the root user (administrative user), you can simply type in su. You will be prompted for the password. Be very carefull when working with the root user. You can damage your system. Only use the root user when needed.

If you get lost, you can use pwd to find your location.
[john@Aaarch Desktop]$ pwd
/home/john/Desktop
[john@Aaarch Desktop]$

To copy and remove files you would use these to commands:
cp - copy
rm - remove
There is as a command to just move files (cut and paste), but I don't use it too often.
mv - move
Too copy and remove dictories, you can use the -r arguement.
cp -r
rm -r

[john@Aaarch ~]$ cp ./43375-coolarch.png ./Desktop/
[john@Aaarch ~]$ cd ./Desktop/
[john@Aaarch Desktop]$ ls
43375-coolarch.png
[john@Aaarch Desktop]$

Keep in mind that Desktop is a dictory. Dictories are usually a different color, if your terminal supports that. To get even more information of files, you can use ls -l instead.

Another useful command is man. man will let you view the manual pages of a command, if there is any availabe. Most distros come with the manual pages installed, and can be very help if learning new commands.

These are just some of the basics, but you will be using these commands as long as you use the terminal. I suggest you read some linux guides and documentation. I'll list a few that I know of, but remember that google is your friend, and also try posting on some forums as well.

What is the Fastest way to teach myself EVERYTHING about computers?
Q. Without taking classes, or minimal classes, considering I have basic computer skills. How can I learn programming, web design, hacking, and other basic IT skills? What books should I read? Best answer gets the points.

A. You could study the rest of your life and you still would never know EVERYTHING about computers. I'll recommend a few books though.

Install Linux on your computer (you want to know EVERYTHING, right? That must include Linux) and get comfortable with it. I recommend Ubuntu because it's easy for beginners. Here's a link to a free ebook that will you help you get acquainted with it:
http://www.ubuntupocketguide.com/index_main.html

If you want more advanced Linux skills, I recommend Linux Command Line and Shell Scripting Bible by Richard Blum. It's pretty detailed and by the end of it you'll be good with the command line and bash scripting.

If you want to learn web design, you should learn HTML - no book recommendation here because you can just google for an HTML tutorial. It's not a programming language, it's not hard, and if you find a long book on HTML it's surely a waste of time.

You'll also want to learn Javascript, probably, for web design. I recommend Object-Oriented Javascript by Stoyan Stefanov. It's a pretty concise book and might be hard to follow if you haven't had any previous programming.

If you want to learn PHP for web development, I really can't recommend anything. I read a fabulous PHP book a few years ago, but it was on PHP 4, and PHP 5 is standard now, so I'm not going to recommend a PHP 4 book. I think PHP may be losing favor to Python though.

Everyone seems to love Python nowadays. Try Learning Python by Mark Lutz. It's 1200 pages long and rather detailed, and the author seems to assume you've had some math, but you need to learn math anyway if you're going to learn EVERYTHING about computers.

That'll keep you busy for a while. After that, you might see how impossible it really is to try to learn everything. You can learn a lot though, and sometimes it's more important to be able to find the information you need than to have things memorized.

How tech savy do you have to be to have a Linux-only computer?
Q. I don't know Unix codes, but I do know a little (Vbasic, Java, C+) programming. How long does it take to learn the proper Unix/Linux codes to properly operate and customize a Linux system?

A. Basic use of Linux is just point and click like Windows and Mac.
There are some differences in the way you do something, in Linux you download most programs through the built-in application manager. For instance in Ubuntu Linux you use Add/Remove program under the Applications menu. It would be good to learn the names of programs that do the tasks that you want to do. This site will help with that. http://linuxappfinder.com/all

Just like Windows and Mac, if you want to do advanced system functions it requires learning to use the command console.
It is much easier to learn than a programing language.
You can do much with learning a few commands and config file locations

Are these Linux distros useable as virtual hosts?

Q. Are there pre-built packages for, or guides to build, programs like Virtualbox on Damn Small Linux, Puppy Linux, or Tiny Core Linux? Or is there any low resource OS's that I haven't listed that would be better suited for the task of being a virtual host? I am wanting to try it out on my current pc before I build one specifically for virtualization.

Also, is it possible to stream a virtual OS from a server so that all the processing is done there and not on the client PC? ( kind of how certain rental companies stream a game to your computer, allowing you to play it, even if your computer doesn't meet the requirements.)

A. I presume you have a decent server so it can run big apps, so try Puppy, it's up to date and capable, unlike those others which might be missing things. Or try Bodhi, which is Ubuntu with a E17 desktop. Fast, and you've got all the Ubuntu repositories.

In Linux, how do I set a program to automatically start on boot-up?
Q. I'm running Tiny Core v3.4. I'd like for my Google Chrome to start up automatically on boot-up. I'd like the easiest, and most efficient way possible?

plz&thx

A. I have not used tiny core but some linux distros have a menu item that will let you automatically startup a program when you boot the computer. Some distros also have an option to restart any apps that are open when you shut down your system. If you select that option and leave chrome open when you shut down it will automatically startup on reboot.
Another possibility: in the link below scroll down to point 4. It explains how to startup some items.Add the name used to start chrome (chrome-browser probably) to the file.

How do I remove/uninstall wBar on Tiny Core?
Q. Basically, I've made my own linux distro based around Tiny Core but I can't figure out how to get rid of the wBar (the thing in the photo below that's blue)

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee140/dreadeddoom/ScreenShot.jpg?t=1359230189

This photo is what my desktop looks like at the minute (with the Enlightenment) I need to get rid of the bar with the blue background...

Thanks,

Daniel.

how do i burn an iso of yellow dog linux onto a dvd?

Q. I downloaded yellow dog linux iso from a torrent and it is a compressed .rar file. Inside this there is a folder called Yellowdog it contains 3.41 gb of the overall 3.71gb. to burn this do i just drag this folder onto my disk drive when i have a dvd inside?

A. no you need a ISO burning capable software such as nero or image burner

Can I burn more than one ISO (bootable operating system) on a DVD and still boot all of them?
Q. I don't happen to have a CD-ROM right now and I have DVD-ROMs instead and planning to burn more than one Linux ISO on it. Will it work and still boot all of them? I'm guessing I might need to use an ISO modifier to change the the kernel path for every ISO.

A. you can burn CD's(700mb disk) in a DVD burner

Is it possible to have both Linux AND OS X Leopard installed on my Powerbook G4?
Q. I am looking at installing Linux on my Powerbook G4, but I don't know if I should.

Say once I install Linux...will I be able to use Leopard any more? Can I pick which OS I want to run when I boot up my computer?

If so any help will be appreciated because I am downloading the Linux ISO right now.

What are the different features from WINDOWS and LINUX when connecting a MP3 Player?.?

Q. I need the different features and display settings when opening LINUX.

If u can screen shot?

A. I recommend trying LinuxMINT or ZorinOS. These Linux distributions have all of the multimedia codecs pre-installed. When connecting an mp3 player in Linux, it will immediately recognise your device and allow you to transfer your files, much the same as you would transfer files to a flash disk. If you are new to Linux, I have several informative videos on Youtube. You can download the distro, burn it to disk and run it without installing to your hard drive. Check out linuxspatry.blogspot.com I hope this helps!

How to capture C and CPP files in the linux operating system?
Q. I am new to linux and have been trying to figure this out forever for a homework assignment! I am supposed to use appropriate linux commands to capture all "C or CPP" files in the linux operating system and make a list of the files. I am using Xubuntu. I am a beginner and could use any advice! Thanks!

A. What does it mean to capture a file??

If you mean to find the files and list the results, use the 'find' command to search for *.c and *.cpp files in the whole system. You will get the result on the screen, and you can redirect the output to a file.

To find *.c files:
find / -name *.c

To find *.cpp files:
find / -name *.cpp

Explanation: the "/" means to start the search at the top of the file system, meaning that the search will include all the system. The "-name" means to search by name, and "*.c" is the file pattern you want to find.

To redirect the output, use "> output_file" for example:
find / -name *.cpp > output_file

Hope it helps. See the manual page 'man find' to learn more.

What other color of death screens for a computer are there?
Q. I knew of blue and have just recently found out about the red screen. I'm not computer savvy so I don't know a whole lot about them.

Are there any other colors of death for a computer screen?

A. The Blue Screen of Death (also called BSOD, BAD for Blue And Dead, stop error, or bluescreen) is a common name for a screen displayed by the Microsoft Windows operating system when a system error occurs. At times a Red Screen of Death (RSoD) may appear, as seen on the Windows 2008 server and a few beta builds of Windows, such as Memphis or Longhorn. It defines very critical hardware errors or boot errors.
The Black Screen of Death is usually one of four things: a failure mode of Microsoft Windows 3.x, the screen displayed by the OS/2 operating system in the event of either a system error from which it cannot recover or a "hard" error in a program running in "full screen" mode (the former being a serious system failure but the latter being a less serious application failure), the Nintendo Wii's non-recoverable brick screen, or the Linux Black Screen of Death. Later versions of the Xbox 360s E74 error are also considered a Black Screen of Death.
The Red Screen of Death is used in some game consoles and in early beta versions of Windows Vista. It also appears in recent versions of Lotus Notes, but does not appear full-screen. Such screens are bright red boxes with black borders.
The Purple Screen of Death is used by VMware ESX Server, a server virtualization product by VMware, Inc. It is displayed in the event of a fatal kernel error. The screen provides error codes that can be used for debugging purposes.
The White Screen of Death may represent different types of failure on several different operating systems and BIOSes, including Apple iPhones and iPods.[1]
A kernel panic is used primarily by Unix and Unix-like operating systems: the Unix equivalent of Microsoft's Blue Screen of Death. It is used to describe a fatal error from which the operating system cannot recover.
A Sad Mac is an iconic symbol used by older-generation Apple Macintosh computers, starting with the original 128K Macintosh, to indicate a severe hardware or software problem that prevented startup from occurring successfully. A similar symbol exists for the iPod.
The Bomb icon is a symbol that was displayed when a "classic" Macintosh operating system (pre-Mac OS X) program had an application crash.
The Row of Bombs screen is used on TOS-based systems to indicate a critical system error.
Guru Meditation is the name of the error that occurred on early versions of the Amiga home computers when they crashed.
The Sad Tab occurs when a web page crashes in Google Chrome. The page looks similar to the Sad Mac found in Macintosh computers.

How do I install applications on Backtrack 2 Linux Distribution?

Q. Hi,

I just installed the Backtrack 2 Linux distribution and I am very newbiew at everything with Linux. So say i wanted to install the Pidgin instant message source. The file name is pidgin-2.2.2.tar.bz2. What exactly would i type in to unpack that file and then install it? And I am also interested in installing Wine. Could someone walk me through that as well?

A. http://forums.remote-exploit.org/showthread.php?t=7180
Try reading here. This distribution is based on slackware Linux and it CAN be difficult for beginners. If I were to recommend a distr for a "newbie" it'd be PCLinuxOS or Freespire. they're TRULY "newbie-friendly" distros.
Hope you have MANY years of fun and learning Linux!

Is installing backtrack effect bios of my system?
Q. someone told me if i install backtrack linux, then i won't be able to install window 7 later i.e it change my all bios settings and i won't recover it later
Is it right or not please tell me soon.

A. It is wrong in that it does not touch your BIOS settings or do anything specifically to disable installing Windows 7. It is somewhat more difficult, but still possible, to install Windows 7 afterward. However, if you have both, you should install Windows 7 first for the easiest dual-boot setup.

Second function key doesnt work on Backtrack 5 R2 Linux?
Q. I am using a sony vaio laptop, Y series VPCYB35AG. To adjust the brightens and volume. However this doesnt work on Backtrack linux 5 R2. So i think it is a driver that is missing. If so, where can i find one?

Also how does Kmix work, how do i play music with it?
If not what is the problem then?

A. 1. The controls for backlights vary . For most systems, you can try adding

Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1"

to the Device section of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file (create it if it doesn't exist).

2. KMix only controls the volume. It doesn't play music. Install / use a media player such as Amarok or Rhythmbox.

What is a good book for learning UNIX and Linux?

Q. I'm a windows person, but have played with Ubuntu before, but I don't know much of anything about it. I would like to learn to program bash/shell code. My end goal is to build my own custom Linux distro, if not through Linux From Scratch at least customize a solid system. Much appreciation!!!!

A. Here is a very basic and complete book on linux.
Good luck

What is the best or easiest Linux to start using LFS on?
Q. I'm starting for the first time to use Linux from Scratch, but it says I have to use it on a 32-bit Linux. Which Linux would be easy to start on?

Any other help about starting to use LFS would help. What is Linux from Script??????????????????

A. Slackware would be a good choice, it includes most (all?) of the tools you'll need to start building your system.

What is the best way to build Linux for Scratch?
Q. I tried to make it my own distro right on my 8 gb hard drive but i ran into sooo sooo many errors like make and configure errors. I wanted to see how someone with experience started off. With a linux-swap partition? I just want everything to run smoothly. Please give me any tips or anything that would help

A. LSF is not for beginners.
Read and follow the directions VERY carefully. Even a slight mistake will result in failure.
1. Read the manual
2. If you have a problem you can get specific help on the IRC or mailing list for LSF. Post exactly what you have done and the errors you get.
Good luck

How do i use Xarchiver to download files?

Q. I have a linux laptop and i want to download Lubi so i can download further programmes e.g Ubuntu, WIne, Shockwave. When i have downloaded the file for Lubi the Xarchiver thing comes up and it is just a load of files. I dont know how to install the software.
thanks (:

A. You shouldn't have downloaded the Lubi app from the source site.

You should just select Lubi in the Ubuntu Package Manager, instead.

Here's the Step by Step:

TIP: Repeat for all other applications you listed.

How do I clone my Operating System for use on another machine?
Q. I have 2 laptops. One runs Windows 7. The other runs linux.

I also have a 2TB USB hard drive.

Both laptops are legally owned. So is Windows 7 (from the one laptop).

How do I "clone" Windows 7 and put it on the linux laptop?

A. You wouldn't. The first thing that would happen would be the windows genuine warning. Secondly, the hardware isn't the same which would only compound your problems.

Can i use my linux laptop as a router to hook my XBOX 360 to XBOX live?
Q. I have a linux laptop connected to the internet through a wireless router i have 3.0 mb/s broadband and i want to know if i can hook an ethernet cable from the ethernet port on my laptop to my XBOX 360 to get on XBOX live Can i do this

A. Probably not, but not because Linux won't do it.

The real problem is that most laptops with both wifi and a hardwired ethernet port will only allow one to work at a time.

As soon as you connect the ethernet cable, the wifi shuts off.

You might be able to do it by using a USB to ethernet adapter to get an ethernet port that will stay live.

A much better and much more useful approach is to find a version 1 through 4 Linksys WRT54G router and install the tomato firmware on it.

If you keep your eyes open, you can frequently find these routers for five to fifteen dollars.

This approach also gives you three extra ethernet ports at the location of the modified router.

How can I remove Linux from my computer and restore the partition space to windows?

Q. I have both Linux Mint 11 and windows 7 on my computer and I no longer want it on my computer so... ya, pretty much says it all in the title.

A. (NOTE: A page titled "How to uninstall Fedora" was added to the project wiki after this blog was published, as noted in the comment section below in a post titled "Contribution is easy.")

Try "remove Fedora."

Nothing.

Go to Ubuntu's official documentation site and search for "uninstall Ubuntu."

You won't find anything in the "official" documentation but in the "community" section you find two entries that state "Wubi allows you to install and uninstall Ubuntu...."

In an installed Ubuntu distribution, clicking on Help and searching for uninstalling or removing Ubuntu finds nothing. A link ârepeat the search online at the Ubuntu help pagesâ brings up a 404 â page not found.

If you look hard enough on the real community support pages you'll find a post from July 2007 titled "HowTo: Remove Ubuntu (& Restore Windows)" .

Have a cow
The post starts out: "Okay, I know some people are going to have a cow because I'm posting this."

(No kidding. Just take a look at the excoriating flames that are sure to appear in the comments section of this blog.)

OpenSUSE does better. A search there finds the page titled SDB:How to Uninstall Linux from December 2006. The page includes more than 1,300 words to describe various processes.

Go to Google and search "install Linux" and you get about 1,450,000 hits. Try "uninstall Linux" and you get about 16,800. "Remove Linux" gets you about 53,300.

Why is it so hard to find instructions to remove Linux and then so hard to actually do it?

Why can't you just easily find the uninstall procedure in a help file, and click a button and follow the instructions?

Windows makes it easy
Opening the Windows XP Help and Support Center and searching for "uninstall Windows" brings up, first thing, "Uninstall Windows XP" and a 5-step process from the Control Center.

Did you know that in a dual-boot install Linux will partition your hard disk and if you remove the partitions without restoring the Master Boot Record on your boot-up disk, your computer won't start?

Did you know you'll likely need separate applications such as fixmbr or fdisk or partitioning software to get your system back the way it was, hopefully having not lost any data? Or you may need to change a BIOS setting to boot to a Windows CD and use its "Recovery Console?" These all depend on your version of Linux. Again, openSUSE seems to do the best job in automating the process, with the "YaST2 Control Center."

Oh, and if that dual installation included Windows, and partitions were resized, "Microsoft does not support Windows installed on partitions manipulated in this manner."

So it's just you and that Linux documentation. Good luck.

Now, I don't have any great love for Windows and I like Linux. I really do. I'm going to use it and learn a lot more about it.

But if you're a newbie like me, you'd best be warned. Searching various Linux forums finds a lot of users who have had problems uninstalling the OS and have lost data in the process.

Go back to Windoze? You're stupid
And while there are some helpful Linux aficionados who try to help these people out -- and others searching for uninstall help -- there are too many posters who take the attitude along the lines of: "Why would you want to uninstall Linux? That's crazy. You must be stupid to want to go back to Windoze."

If you want to try Linux out while keeping Windows, it's a real good idea to try it from a "live" Linux CD/DVD instead of installing it on a hard disk. Iâve tried several. The response is slower, of course, but you get an idea of how it works and donât risk losing anything. For Ubuntu the Wubi installer accomplishes the same thing by treating Ubuntu as a Windows application.

Do your homework
If you do install Linux on a disk, make sure you do a full system backup. And make sure you have a bootable "rescue" or "system" CD. And really do your homework. Read up on disk partitioning and logical volumes and extended partitions and mounts; and GRUB and LILO bootloaders; and NTFS, FAT 32 and ext3 file systems; and gparted and maybe the commercial app Partition Magic -- which supposedly merges/resizes partitions without destroying data -- and so on.

Then read it all again. And be careful our there.

How different is a Linux network compared to a Unix network?
Q. How different is a Linux network compared to a Unix network? I understand a Unix network has mainframes, etc.

What are the things a Unix network has but a Linux network does not have and can never have?

A. Uhm... nooo.... Unix networking has about zero to do with mainframes.

Actually, Unix networking and Linux networking are pretty darned close with little or no exceptions.

Where are you getting your information from? Where ever it is, its bad information. Don't go there any more.

Whats the difference between Linux and windows hosting? Do i need Linux on my system to linux host?
Q. Whats are the advantages and the disadvantages of Linux hosting? why is it cheaper ? If I make a website in Dreamweaver and Flash CS5, can I Linux host?
Do I need to be wary about something?

A. All websites today currently run on either a Windows web server or a Linux-based server. The vast majority of websites run on a Linux-based platform as Linux has a strong reputation for security and web server performance. With standard (static) HTML-based websites, the web hosting platform doesn't make much difference. When it does make a difference, however, is when the website uses a dynamic scripting technology such as ASP (A Microsoft based technology), or PHP / PERL (Linux based technologies). A Windows-based hosting solution will run a Microsoft Windows server with IIS (Internet Information Server), and is necessary to run an ASP / ASP.NET scripted website. A Linux-based platform is typically used for PHP, Perl, and most other types of websites. Basically, unless your website uses ASP (pages ending in the .asp extention), Windows hosting is not necessary.

As an experienced webmaster I recommend BH web hosting which Iâm sure it would work for you and fulfill all your requirements. They have a really great offer for hosting & I have used them for over 3 yrs now, and have never had a single problem with them.

How do I connect Windows and Linux?

Q. I have two laptops behind the same router. Both connect to the internet just fine. One is Windows XP Media Center Edition and the other is Ubuntu 6.06. I'm used to using Windows file sharing to share files between Windows laptops. I want to do something similar now between the Windows and Linux laptop. I just care about reliability, speed, and convenience, not security. What are my options and how do I do it?

A. you need to install samba on your linux machine in order for windows to see your linux files.

on linux, you need to mount the windows share using the mount command. you'll need to use type "cifs".

if you can't figure it out, you could always just use IIS WebDAV on windows and Apache WebDAV on Linux. Same concept and it lets you access files just as you normally would but using the HTTP protocol.

What design programs.........Asus Eee PC 8G Linux Laptop?
Q. I LOVE to design, but i am moving with my sister soon and i can't take my old desktop computer that i had when i was living with my mom, so i decided to invest in the Asus Eee PC 8G Linux Laptop(just ordered it online). I was wondering what programs are compatible with this laptop? By the way, i use Photoshop CS3 Extended now. Also if you have any other tips for me about this laptop please leave them!.

A. It runs Xandros Linux. There are tons of programs available for Linux, but you won't be able to use a lot of the programs you use with Windows. Don't worry, there is tons of alternatives that are, in many cases, better

Check this out:
http://www.linuxalt.com/

Look up your favorite Windows programs, and check out the Linux alternatives.

Also, there is a program called Wine, which allows you to run many Windows programs on Linux. I don't think Photoshop CS3 runs yet, but I know Photoshop CS2 runs quite well. Photoshop might take up all the hard drive space on that thing. Check out GIMP for a photoshop alternative, it'll most likely be preinstalled on your laptop

How to develop a more "Student Friendly" course?
Q. Hello! Folks
I need some suggestions over here. I am working on development of some Linux training courses for a college in my town. I am good at the technical aspects that we are going to teach but didn't have any previous experience in course development. I want to make the course more user friendly and attractive for students. I want to keep student's interest within the course from the start to end of a module. Should we teach every topic with real life scenarios and is it possible? Well, every suggestion is welcomed.

A. I don't know about a real life scenario for every topic, but I'm sure that students would appreciate as much practical application as you can give them. As a non-tech person I always appreciate clear, well defined terms, don't assume people have that knowledge base. Discussion and interaction are always good as well. Good luck!

Where am I able to play Same GNOME for free online?

Q. My father has linux on his computer and I ended up becoming fond of the game that came with it, titled 'Same Gnome' I found out later that it is specifically called 'Swell Foop' and it is another version of Same Game, but I really liked that version in particular.

Where can I play the linux version of SameGame, called Same GNOME? Thank you!

A. It's Linux software - you can only play it on Linux. GNOME is a desktop environment.

how do i install itunes 10 on linux ubuntu?
Q. I've used wine and play on linux to download the application, but it just isn't working. Every time I click on the application to open it doesn't open up. Does anyone know what I can do to make it work.
itunes seven is working just fine, but I don't want the old version i want the newer version.

A. I love it when people respond to questions, and have no idea what there talking about.

First make sure you have an up to date copy of WINE and POL, I know the POL in the Ubuntu repos is the older version (at least last time I checked) Same goes for WINE. Make sure your running if from either the WINE menu, or from POL directly. If you just double click the EXE it will run without the switches, and may not work at all. If your doing all of this I'd suggest a complete PURGE not removal of WINE and POL. Don't use Software center, use apt-get. Software center will only remove them

#sudo apt-get purge wine
#sudo apt-get purge playonlinux
#sudo apt-get autoremove
#sudo apt-get autoclean

Make sure there's no hidden folders in your home folder (with a . in front of them) referencing WINE or POL. Alt+H will show them

Download POL from them directly, don't install from the Ubuntu repos. (Current Ver is 3.8.12)
http://www.playonlinux.com

POL Is dependent on WINE, so it will be installed automatically, so will the MS fonts. It should work fine after that.

Banshee has come a long way, not really a need to run iTunes in Linux anymore. I just installed it to see what would happen and it appeared to run fine, imported my music library and played them fine, connected to my ipod etc. You results should be the same. I still like Native software when possible.

How do i find out how much memory my graphic card has ubuntu?
Q. ok im using play on linux and when i am installing steam it asked how much memory my graphic card has and i dont know how to find out help?

A. if it's discrete you should be able to look up the model number to find out.

For integrated, you need to dig in the bios and see how much RAM was set aside for video buffers.

Is there any way to create a portable linux OS that can run on Macs and PCs?

Q. I'm just curious. I use Mac OSX (leopard) and I think it would be nice to have a portable Linux OS that will carry all of my files and settings so I could have those where ever I am (and of course so I could avoid using Windows). I was just wondering if there is any way of doing this. Size isn't much of an issue since I'm planning to get a new flashdrive for it anyway.

A. Yes, there is a few types:
Feather Linux
http://featherlinux.berlios.de/
Stress Linux
http://www.stresslinux.org/
Flash Linux
http://www.encryptec.net/flashlinux
NimbleX
http://nimblex.net/

Some PC's or macs will need you to change the bootup order in the BIOS menu when you first boot up your PC, it's easy to do, but I can't explain cos it differers from each PC/Mac.

How can you install windows 7 on a linux os computer?
Q. My brother has a linux os computer and he wants to install windows 7 using my disc. Any help?

A. Assuming his linux computer is i386 based processor computer (PC) then he must choose whether to install in natively, as dual boot, or as a guest operating system, in a virtual machine.

This of course, assuming that he owns the license for the windows 7.

Installing it natively allows you to install 2 operating systems on your PC, but allows you to only use one at any given time. Usually, upon boot, the os loader (grub or OS Loader) would ask which operating system you would like to use.

Installing in a virtual machine, on the other hand, creates a virtual computer within your Linux operating system, like VMWare or Xen. This virtual computer can then be installed the Windows7. You can use both operating system at the same time, and even communicate with the both machines as if they are physically separate computers.

Down side is that, since this is 1 machine running inside another, your guest operating system cannot get the full performance load running your host computer.

Are there any linux os that will run on an old laptop with a Linksys wireless card?
Q. I have a few Linux OS i have tried out and none of them worked with a Linksys wifi card. Can a Linksys wireless card work with Linux or is there another OS that will work with it and work on an old computer?
I am running on a very slow and old laptop Pentium 3 with original windows 98 installed on it.

A. Find what model card you have and see if it is supported, ie google ubuntu + card model. It may simply be a matter of installing the appropriate driver from the repository.

An alternative is to install ndiswrapper, if it isn't already installed, and use the .inf file from the XP drivers for the card, which you can download from the manufacturers website.

If the machine doesn't have at least 256 meg of ram then it won't be capable of web surfing.

The lightest full system to use would be puppy. Xpud is also worth a try, it is basically just a browser and a file manager. The best choice for a polished, configurable system would be lubuntu (ubuntu with the lxde desktop).

Cheers!

How to make mouse work after wrong shutdown in PUPPY linux?

Q. After failing to shutdown puppy propery when I boot my pc it comes with a warning and I have to choose IGNORE or COMMAND LINE and when I choose ignore it enters puppy and my MOUSE doesn't work.... how to fix it? I have to reinstall puppy everytime than and it's so annoying..

ps it's not me who is shutting puppy wrong, it's computer used for internet, so guests shutdown incorrectly or something...

A. I believe that Puppy is best used off the LiveCD, why don't you install a different distro?

Puppy is now based off of Ubuntu, just fyi. I personally think that Ubuntu is over rated, I prefer Linux Mint to Ubuntu due to user friendliness. If you want try the Linux Mint 9 go with Flux Box, Xfce, or LXDE for faster versions that require less system resources (In other words to run like Puppy) or even LMDE (Debian Edition). http://linuxmint.com/

You may want to give Fedora a try also which is another of my favorites: http://fedoraproject.org/

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
sudo apt-get purge nvidia*
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install nvidia-173-dev
sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Then your pc should restart and tadaa... nvidia driver working

The right, proper, safe way to turn a Linux (Slackware) machine off?
Q. I noticed it might corrupt the hard disk if I turn it off while it is running a desktop environment. I noticed I must first get out of the desktop environment, and give the command exit and make myself log off, and then it is safe to turn it off. Is that correct?

thanks!!

A. No, to properly shutdown, run the following as root:
/sbin/shutdown -h now

If you wan't to be able to shutdown as a regular user, set the suid bit:
chmod +s /sbin/shutdown

You can also edit /etc/inittab and change the default runlevel to 4, then you will be able to just shutdown from the kde menu.

How to save file to desktop using Linux commands.?
Q. I am a beginner to Linux commands. I use SSH to connect to a Linux server. What command can I use to save a text file on the server to my desktop? Example?

A. From your desktop, fire up a terminal, or use Cygwin if you're under Windows (make sure you have installed the openssh packages) :

scp <your_user_name>@<server_name>:<path to remote file> <path to local dir/file>

Enter your password, and you're done :)

Why wont my downloaded version of wordpress work?

Q. I downloaded wordpress from wordpress.org and it downloaded it as a zipped folder, I unzipped it but it is still just alot of documents and folders and files and I have no idea how to set it up. I know other people have had this problem, any advice?

A. you need a running server (apache/php/mysql). [apache is reccommended, but not required)
It might be easier to sign up for a free hosting plan, so you don't have to think about the server-part

However if you'd prefer to have wordpress on your own computer:
http://php.net/manual/en/install.php
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/1.3/windows.html
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/windows-installation.html

I took it that you're a windows user, if you have a linux distribution on you computer, you should be able to find these software packages in the repositories

How do i create a Wakepup Floppy Under Linux?
Q. im switching between my xubuntu live cd to a Puppy Linux running from a USB FD, i downloaded Wakepup which allows your old pc to boot from your USB device but its a windows Installer, its design for windows and i dont have access to it right now. So how can i create the Boot up floppy under Linux?

A. I think you will find the information you need at:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=3875

Note at the top of the thread, there is a link for the WakePup disk image for version 2.0. The link for Version 1.0 {WKPUP11C.ZIP } is lower on the page.

The directions are for Puppy1 {wakePup 1.1c} so you will have to translate them as needed if YOUR's is Puppy2.

In a nutshell, once you have the proper image it needs to be uncompressed and written {as root} to the floppy using 'dd' in Linux. For example, assuming Puppy1:

# unzip WKPUP11C.ZIP
# dd if=WKPUP11C.IMG of=/dev/fd0 bs=1440k

BTW, WakePup is a Puppy boot disk using FreeDOS, with support for USB mass storage drives (CD-ROM, hard disk and flash), legacy parallel port drives (Backpack CD-ROM and Iomega ZIP) and legacy PCMCIA drives (Addonics or similar CD-ROM).

You may also find this link helpful if you want to create a boot CD version:
http://www.puppylinux.com/cd-puppy.htm

How do I install Eclipse in Mint Linux?
Q. I'm trying to install Eclipse on my computer with Mint Linux to do some Java and Android development. Using Google Chrome, I downloaded the correct version of Eclipse. It's in my downloads folder as a .tar.gz. When I double click on it, it takes me to the archive manager and shows the folders. How do I install it?

A. The command:

tar -xvf

will untar the file. Then cd to the directory that you unzipped and type :

more README

and read that file. There may be and INSTALLATION file -- read that as well. The normal installation routine goes something like this:

./configure

followed by

./make

then

./make install

and that should do it.

Can anyone help me with installing programs on Linux?

Q. I dont have internet on the computer i have linux on, am i screwed or is there still a way?

A. Some software is distributed in "Source form". This means you download a file containing all the source code for the application you want to install, unpack it, and compile it on your system. Compiling is the process of turning the source code into an executable binary. It is a fairly straight forward process.

Typically applications you must compile from source will come as a ".tar.gz", ".tar.bz2", or ".zip" file.

You'll probably want to operate from inside your home directory. If your user is (for example) username, your home directory will be /home/username/. Downloaded your zip file containing install files to /home/username/src. If you do not have a src directory, you can create it with the following "mkdir" (make directory) command:

Code:
mkdir /home/username/src/
So, we have our source package in /home/username/src/.

Change to the /home/username/src/ directory with the "cd" (change directory) command like so:

Code:
cd /home/username/src/
Use the "ls" (list directory contents) command, to see the file is present:

Code:
ls

We now need to unzip the zipped file, this is done differently depending on the file extension.

for files ending in .tar.gz, use:

Code:
tar -zxvf <filename>
(replacing <filename> with the name of the file).

for files ending in .tar.bz2, use:

Code:
tar -jxvf <filename>
for files ending in .zip, use:

Code:
unzip <filename>
You should now have a new directory, containing all of the source files. To confirm it exists, and to get its name, use the "ls" command again.

Code:
ls
we now need to go into the new directory, so use the cd command:

Code:
cd <directory>

This is where things will differ. Some packages will have an INSTALL or README file which will contain installation instructions. use "ls" to see if the software has an install or readme file. If it does have one, you can use the "more" command to read it, like so:

Code:
more INSTALL
Generally, the final 3 stages are as follows:
- Configure the installation
- Compile the software
- Install the binaries

The pre-installation configuration is done by executing ./configure:

Code:
./configure
This will perform some requirements testing on your system, and create a "Makefile" which will explain to the "make" utility how the software should be compiled.

The next stage is to compile the software, this is done using "make". When you run "make" it will read the instructions in the Makefile and build the application binaries.

Code:
make

The final stage is to install these binaries, ie, copy them to a more permanent location. Typically only the "root" user can do this, so you will need to swich to the root user with the "su" command:

Code:
su
Once you are root, install the binaries using the "make" command, followed by "install", like so:

Code:
make install

How can I open a zip file on a Linux OS?

what kind of hourly wage could i expect with a A+ certification?

Q. I plan on taking it this summer and was wondering where could i work and what kind of pay i would receive. I plan on taking my linux certification this winter any idea what that pays?

A. Really dont expect much. A+ is the basics of basics. Depending on your area and where you apply, you will probably start a few dollars ($2-4) over minimum wage, if you have no job experience. Linux certifications are only meaningful if the place you are apply has any Linux machines in the first place. Most of the business world runs Windows, and then if at all, they run Linux for task specific jobs, which are basically set and forget.

Linux certification - Which is the best study guide?
Q. Hello,

I want to update my skills and resume with Linux Certification. I am comfortable with windows but have little experience with unix (mostly adding users). Can anyone recommend any books aimed at passing the Linux certification test. Also which version is covered on the test VS which is the most popular used in businessess.

Thanks for the help.

A. The test is fairly generic. O'Reilly publishes not all but most of the best books on the topic. RHEL Certified Engineer is actually the best certification to have but if you are going for Linux Certified Engineer then it really doesn't matter -- it's a pretty generic test. I WOULD go for the Red Hat certification if I were you, and study hard for it. They recommend taking courses and I undersstand why.

What's the best route to take for networking/repair?
Q. I'm just starting out in my trek to obtain a job in something dealing with networking and/or repair. I am thinking about certifications like the CCNA, MCSE, A+, and Linux certifications. I would prefer not to do degree work if possible. I'm not exactly looking for an extremely high-paying job: I'm fine with something on the lower strata perhaps making $15-$20/hr. Where should I go first?

A. CCNA is better than A+,

A+ is entry level stuff that basically says you know what a computer is, how it shoudl work. It's a bit of a joke, Getting CCNA will show you have the knowledge of A+

Is there any way I can speed up Tekkit on my computer?

Q. I'm running the Technic pack for minecraft on linux, but with a 32x32 texture pack and all the setting set to the lowest (Render distance, Particles, etc), I get about 8-12 FPS. I have 4 GB of RAM allocated to it, but it hasn't sped up much (If at all). Is there any way I can get a higher frame rate?

A. I have the same problem. But i know how to fix it(i'm on windows) You know how to get to the technic pack folder? Then tekkit>options(text object) The search for fps limit and change it to 2050. Then start up tekkit, and you should have a higher frame rate. It worked for me. If you didn't get any higher fps then you should search for antoher forum. Hope i helped :)

Will running a minecraft server on my computer slow it down?
Q. I have decided to run a small minecraft server on my computer. I have am using a macbook pro. I want to know if this will slow down my computer, or will it only slow down when the server is running. Also, if i deleted the server would it run fast again? At tops, I will have 10 people on at once.

A. if you are going to run a server use Linux
do not use a Windows based PC for any server --- i know you are not i just wanted to point that out
but really if it's a server you want to run you can use Linux and it will be amazing esp if its a built in program by the game
YES Minecraft runs on Linux --- if you don't know what Linux is have a look at Linux Mint MATE edition or XFCE so it will run fast but still be easy to use
and it's not hard to run either

What linux will boot off of my pen drive? ive been having some trouble?

Q. I tried to put ubuntu 10.8 on my pen drive 3 times. and it says "No OS" at boot. ive done my research and saw that i wasnt the only one with this problem

does anyone know a good linux that will boot off of a pen drive?

Im new to linux, i enjoyed Ubuntu's live CD tho, but i need a bootable pen drive

A. Whether you can boot from your USB pen drive or not depends entirely on your motherboard.

Have you set your computer to boot from it in the BIOS? Double check.

Which is the smallest Linux distro which can read ntfs partitions?
Q. I need to recover some files from my windows installation using a linux live cd. I have some imp documents in c: which i need to copy into a pen drive. Which will be the most suitable linux for this purpose?

A. You could use Puppy linux.
You could also use a Windows "live cd" such as Bart's PE.

How can I install Linux Mint 7 on a net book?

Can I install it using a pen drive/ external hard drive? Please give me a detailed informatory paragraph with the exact steps.

A. Here is a link to how to install linux mint without a cd drive. You could run mint from the usb or do what they call a frugal install.
Did you check to see if the specs for the netbook are adequate for linux mint, or any other full linux distro?
You may need to use a linux distro that is customized for the netbook. Here ar some links that discuss various distros for the netbook
Good luck

How do I convert my musical technology on my laptop into hardware?

Q. I have a linux laptop with synthesizers, loopers, etc. The laptop is a pain in the ass and 70% of the time I spend with it is troubleshooting. I was wondering if anybody has or had a setup with a looper, synthesiser, and drum machine that is all hardware. I also need to know where to find these. I am also not quite sure about something else: Would a midi keyboard work with a hardware synthesiser and looper. Much appreciation if this question is answered.

A. There are several stand-alone sequencers like the Yamaha QY series. Also, several beat boxes like Korg's Electribe series will output midi data which allows them to be used as both a source of sounds and a sequencer for other drum machines.

I too do not like using laptops live (although I have.) Too many thing to go wrong. If you do end up using a laptop, keep it simple with only a midi sequencer running (like Cakewalk, Cubase, Sonar, etc.) Once you get softsynths running, you're maximizing CPU and memeory resources and running the risk of a crash.

As far as loopers, there are several stand-alone models like the Boss LoopStation. Synthesizer workstation like the Roland Fantom or Yamaha Motif will also play loops, although those types of keyboards are very expensive.

Good Luck!

How do I swith operating systems on my laptop?
Q. My friend gave me an Ubuntu/Linux laptop but on the side of it it says Windows Vista. Does that mean It used to be Windows and if so how can I change it back. Please help, I really hate using Linux, it's a piece of trash.

A. Linux is great if you know what you are doing, and it isn't hard to figure out. If you must, though, then there are two possibilities for getting Windows back on it.

1. Ask if it is dual partitioned. If it is, then when you turn it on, when it is still in the BIOS it will give you an option briefly for which system to load. Select Windows and you will load up no problem.

2. If it not dual partitioned you will have to use a Windows OS disk. Those can be about $100+ unless your friend has one.

If you don't like Ubuntu you can try Linux Mint or some other nice operating system for free. Different versions of Linux run different and you might like another version better. You could also Google "free non linux OS" or something of the sort.

If you post your main problem with Ubuntu under additional details, I will recommend something further.
