What is the difference between GNU and GUI?

Q. I have no clue what GNU is but I know gui is Graphic User Interface. GUI is in like mac windows while GNU is in linux/ubuntu, basically any unix system.

A. GNU is the name of software or software collections release by the Free Software Foundation. Originally a recursive acromyn (hackers are quite fond of recursive acronyms) that means GNU is Not Unix.

GNU's GUI is GNOME (GNu Object Model Enviroment), other GUI's for linux are KDE, or XFCE and are not GNU.

GNU really underlies the core system, the compiler, utilities, and many of the tools.

How to get into cgi and movie production with CGI?
Q. I currently study IT at college, and pretty much set to go to UNI in 2 years.
I'm wondering what i can study at UNI to get myself into cgi and what other things I could also study.
I want to do a foundation diploma in graphics before i go to UNI so im just wondering if that will help too.
I really need some pointers on where to go and what im expected to do before uni etc.

Any help is wonderful

Cheers.

A. Definitely graphics will help but most of the people I know who are in animation and movies actually have more of a fine arts background. They don't even often have degrees in it but at least they've been through a two year foundation program at one or another school. The one exception is purely IT: he got his job because he knows Linux (and UNIX which he often prefers). He handles networking and troubleshooting render farms. Not the creative stuff. Really, to work in Movie production you will find you are competing with LOT of top-ranked people and you will need to know whatever you know thoroughly. Most CGI that gets done these days uses the Renderman Graphic description standards.

Could anybody tell me what's the big difference between linux and windows?
Q. Our office has purchased windows programs with license. Our administrator, however, insist to use linux?

A. Carl P's answer is very good, however there is something which a lot of people don't talk about. Windows evolved from MS-DOS (which itself was a port of CP-M) and conceptually still owes an AWFUL lot to it, even though microcomputers have changed so radically there probably isn't that much code yet.

In fact, we almost never use the term microcomputer for desktops any more. They aren't microcomputers. Microcomputers had a far simpler chip architecture than other computers and Windows had to accommodate this.

MS-Dos evolved on and for independent computers which did not connect with each other by default. These computers were often very simple, and didn't have the resources for forking and other basic things which UNIX used. The first GCC compiler for MS-Dos/Windows came about when D. J. Delorie heard Richard Stallman (who wrote GCC) give a speech where he discussed why he didn't think DOS would ever get a port. Delorie certainly had the right to, but Stallman didn't think it was possible till djgpp proved him wrong.

UNIX, since it was so widely used for networking (the Internet pretty much developed on it and it evolved with it) was and is a modular operating system with programs which work together regardless of what architecture they are compiled for.

As microprocessors started to get sophisticated enough to do things like fork(), Linus Torvalds wrote a kernel of an operating system which would run UNIX programs on the 386 and up microprocessors. Programs like X-Windows, which is what drives Ubuntu desktops and which you will see older versions of on films from Nasa and Carnegie-Mellon as far back as 1987.

There are a lot of profound differences which can be summarized as: Windows is an OS based on MS-DOS which is intended for consumers. Not users, consumers. That's why the hardware demands are so heavy and why Vista was expected to spur hardware sales then didn't. All their design choices are based on that fact and they are so willing to limit your choices that it doesn't provide a very good development environment. It's no wonder your administrator would prefer Linux.

A typical example of what I'm talking about. There was a recent email from Microsoft to the Blender Open Source project -- a three-dimensional animation project which began life as in-house software for an Amsterdam animation house. I don't know what inspired this, other than their efforts to encourage people to develop specifically for windows, but they were trying to get them to do that and talked up two features -- OOXML which has absolutely nothing to do with animation -- and DirectX which is so Windows-specific it makes it hard for programs which render with it to run on MacOS or Solaris or other operating systems.

And that is precisely important. To use two Linux-specific examples, a recent film sponsered by the Blender Foundation (and available for free at http://www.bigbuckbunny.org ) made to show off what the program can do was rendered on a network of Ubuntu boxes. A small, eccentric but neat Linux distro called dyne:bolic (for media activists) has specific documentation for Blender, but instead of talking about animation it discusses setting up networks to render the animations which somebody does.

Ubuntu markets itself as an OS for consumers. What it really is is the UNIX Development Desktop with a Linux kernel and a bunch of scripts and hacks which make it reasonably useful for consumers and the Computer-illiterate. Compare it to a Sun Solaris desktop and you will see what I mean.

Microsoft is a consumer oriented desktop. As such it is focusing more and more on OSes for computers with the latest hardware and unlimited broadband internet connections (since the nineties many of its programs have attempted to access the net with or without the User's permission). That's the bottom line -- there are downsides to Microsoft's approach the company does not discuss at all. And it has made Ubuntu very attractive to a lot of people.

But as an engineer your administrator probably prefers Linux because of the control it gives him over his own machine. Windows Machines, through required patches and validations, are controlled by Redmond. The motto of the free software movement is "free as in freedom, not as in beer."

which is the best virtual machine software which runs over vista and fully supports linux?

Q. I am planning to install Linux over my Vista using a virtual machine....does anyone know which virtual machine should i use?
Thanks for you reply guys!!! Can you tell me which VMware should i use coz i saw many versions ...Wubi is good but i want to install Ubuntu in virtual machine environment just to try ....if i like it i will actually install in my hard drive.

A. I recommend VirtualBox http://www.virtualbox.org/ I have used it to test countless Linux distros.

Alternatively you can run off a LiveCD. You download an ISO of the distro. and create a bootable disc using Nero Burning ROM or similar software.

Once you have done that you can Linux LIVE without touching your Hard Drive and performance would be improved to that of a Virtual installation.

I recommend Linux Mint 4.0 (Daryna) http://www.linuxmint.com/rel_daryna.php which is superior to raw Ubuntu and easy to install and use http://www.howtoforge.com/desktop-installation-guide-linux-mint-4.0-daryna This is an installation guide but it also gives a detailed summary of the contents of Linux Mint and may come in useful should you decide to install it on VirtualBox.

Is it possible to run a real computer, (on an external drive, or another partition) inside a virtual machine?
Q. I am somewhat experienced with computers and used virtual machines on a range of OS's (host and virtual).
I am currently dual-booting Linux(Debian-based) and Windows(vista).

My question really is: Can i use my windows inside a virtual machine on my Linux, or my Linux inside a virtual machine on my Windows?

Any reply is appreciated!

A. If you're experienced with virtual machines and have done it before... why are you asking?

Anyway, go to http://www.vmware.com/ and download the free one. You can also (if this is what you're asking) connect to an already existing hard drive, partition, etc., and boot the OS that way. Works A LOT better with the already-existing Linux hard drive than vice-versa.

It is Linux, Windows, etc., compatible as both a host and a guest OS.

How do I run Linux on a Virtual Machine in Windows XP SP3?
Q. I can't use VMware's VMplayer, because I use VMACE for work and they conflict.

What virtual machine should I use?

And also, which distro if Linux should I start with? I'm not experienced at all.

A. You can try Virtual Box and Ubuntu

Backup to a home network via Internet?

Q. Which NAS allows me to backup my laptop to my home hard drive via the internet?
For example, I travel to Europe and want to backup to my NAS which is at home in Asia. Is it possible to backup this way? If so which company is recommended?
Netgear, WD, Synology, QNAP, ...?

Thanks

A. Well it isn't so much a specific NAS tool as it is the ability for your ISP to allow incoming traffic of this kind. You might want to use something like FreeNAS or TurnKey Linux and then set up a VPN on your home network. When you are away, simply access your VPN and you will have access to your NAS just as if you never left your home network, plus VPN typically adds some privacy too.

Autodesk student software help?
Q. Is there a version of Autodesk Smoke that's for Windows in the Student download center? I saw the one for mac but can't seem to find any other versions.

A. Autodesk Smoke is originally sold on SGI hardware, it was later ported as a turnkey solution on Linux and Mac OS X.

compare - linux, microsft, apple?
Q. essay.
Need good point about MS, apple, + linux
bad points abour: Ms (I know there are millions) , apple +linux

A. MS pros:. Preinstalled. lots of software. good support for most new hardware.
MS Cons: expensive, buggy, prone to worms/viruses/trojans/spyware ..etc, poor support of older hardware, very processor intensive, limited customizing capability, requires continual tweaking.

Linux pros: Stable, secure from most malware, tons of free software (often included), works with most PC hardware, including non intel and older intel processors, can runs some Dos and Windows software

Linux cons: Confusing to new users, must be installed, requires know-how to configure some hardware. cutting-edge hardware may not be supported. Popular commercial software such as games may not be readily available.

Apple pros: Excellent Turnkey system. Excellent stability. fairly low incidence of malware. Simple user interface.
Apple Cons: Somewhat pricey, poor backward compatibility between OS versions.

The focus of the Apple macintosh line has been to bring a computer to the masses as an appliance. So the user can work on their documents without haveing to fiddle with the configuration constantly.

Windows is positioned by MS corp to maintain a strong-arm monopolistic position on the computer software industry as a means of maximizing the value of it's stock.

Linux is the core of a concerted grass-roots approach (Open Source Initiative) that uses an ultra-democratic, ultra-competitive approach to produce software to compete against anti-competitive monopolies and their attempts to subvert everthing for profit legal or otherwise.

What are the benefits of a Linux operating system?

Q. I've used Windows and and Mac operating systems, but never Linux. Are there any benefits to having a Linux operating system? Are there any disadvantages? Are they more likely to contract a virus?

A. A more informed user primary benefit.

Quicker more efficient system with less overhead and shit loads of free software. other beni

It won't make you a sandwich disadvantange.

Much less likely to get a virus, and if it does odds are it won't affect your machine but if you do get one you install Linux with a seperate home partition.

so when you have to format you just format your root partition.

Just for the record a Java/Flash/pdf buffer overflow attack can do just as much damage as a virus or more and is cross platform.

Typically these types of crap is put in pron and stuff people like to steal ie P2P over vuze or utorrent and stuff like that.

Most Linux users still Dual boot, just like allot of mac users boot camp.

Best place to start with Linux is to get Ubuntu and run the live Cd and see if you like it, you can also test your drivers running the live cd.

If you use Ubuntu you will probably need Ubuntu restricted extras from synaptic and a bunch of other stuff

You might run into problems with wireless drivers

What Linux operating system is best for a home audio and video recording system?
Q. Me and my friends are starting a band from scratch. We are building a computer from scratch and using a Linux Operating system to power it, but which distribution is the best for audio and video recording for a band?

A. Don't know about the "for a band" spec, but check out

64 Studio and

an Ubuntu clone that is for audio / video - it may be called mediabuntu or studiobuntu or something similar - do a google search on it

How to capture C and CPP files in the linux operating system?
Q. I am new to linux and have been trying to figure this out forever for a homework assignment! I am supposed to use appropriate linux commands to capture all "C or CPP" files in the linux operating system and make a list of the files. I am using Xubuntu. I am a beginner and could use any advice! Thanks!

A. What does it mean to capture a file??

If you mean to find the files and list the results, use the 'find' command to search for *.c and *.cpp files in the whole system. You will get the result on the screen, and you can redirect the output to a file.

To find *.c files:
find / -name *.c

To find *.cpp files:
find / -name *.cpp

Explanation: the "/" means to start the search at the top of the file system, meaning that the search will include all the system. The "-name" means to search by name, and "*.c" is the file pattern you want to find.

To redirect the output, use "> output_file" for example:
find / -name *.cpp > output_file

Hope it helps. See the manual page 'man find' to learn more.

What is the most basic linux operating system?

Q. What linux distro is the most basic?

I am looking for an operating system that includes:

-command line
-no splash screen when booted
-nothing else.

A. There's no one answer to this question. There are many small Linux distributions. Take your pick.

There's one called Tiny Linux which is pretty small (~7mb).
http://tinylinux.sourceforge.net/
SmallLinux may fit your bill.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/smalllinux/
MuLinux is a minimal distro. It fits on a floppy (1.44mb). Desktop is optional.
http://mulinux.dotsrc.org/
Here's a few lists of other distros that may be what you want. Most of them fit on a floppy disk.
http://www.linuxlinks.com/Distributions/Floppy/
http://computerstuff.jdarx.info/content/floppycd-linux-distributions

If you really want something smaller than that you can make your own distro. But I can't tell you how to do that.

Generally, what are the most commonly used programming languages?
Q. I know my way around Python and Visual Basic. That's about it. I also know some about the Linux command line, especially in Ubuntu context.

Can anyone help me to determine, what are the next several languages I should concern myself with studying?

A. It really shouldn't matter what languages you learn. What's really important is that you learn the patterns and data structures that span all languages. Once you do this, you'll pick up any language in about a couple weeks with no problem. As far as resume building is concerned, I would feel completely confident in landing a development job anywhere with C/C++ skills and a web job with PHP/SQL skills. Generally, C++ is so versatile because you don't have to rely on the underlying runtime frameworks (JRE for java, and .NET for VB/C#) that many companies try to avoid.

Saying that, Java is also a good one to dabble in if you haven't already, though I would not steer too clear of learning how do deal with memory in C/C++.

It's good you know Python, though you'll definitely need a more powerful language if your going to be serious about a career in software.

Get to know how to build makefiles and construct classes and such in C++ on ubuntu. Get to know how to do everything with a command prompt and vi. Once you understand all of this, you become much more powerful as a developer in general.

What is the best linux distribution for learning to use many?
Q. First, a bit about my background.. I currently work as a Network Engineer, mainly with Cisco routers/switches and VPN devices. I am throughly familiar with Windows, both as a workstation and server, and have one more test to go to complete my MCSE. However, I have no real experience with Linux, and feel like this is both a hole in my personal knowledge and in my resume. :) I can do basic user stuff both from a command line and in Xwindows, but have no real command of it.

That said, I intend to rectify this. I want to start using Linux as my primary operating system on my personal PC, as I feel this is a great first step to really force myself to learn it. I need to know what distribution would be best for me to use. My concern is some of them seem to have alot of propriatary tools that are not found in other linux distros, I want to find one to learn on that will best allow me to be comfortable on any linux distro I run into in the future. Thanks much for your advice!

A. Linux truly is a wonderful operating system! If I'm using a PC, I greatly prefer using it to Windows. It's much more stable, secure, etc. But you already knew that. =]

Personally, I would suggest you start out with OpenSuSE. It's easy to use, yet it is very powerful. Its installer is also pretty easy. I recommend that because a lot of businesses that run Linux on their client systems use SuSE (the only difference between that and OpenSuSE is that SuSE contains closed-source programs; therefore, you have to pay for that distro).

I hope this helps! Good luck!

How do I block websites on my computer?

Q. I use Google Chrome. On a linux machine, though I doubt that's relevant.

This ear I am taking 8 different senior highschool courses, and I have a habit of aimlessly looking for funny things on the internet. I need to block my favorite websites until I'm in good habits. Like putting a padlock on the fridge when you know your weakness.

A. First of all âhostsâ is the name of the file not the folder. Please refer to the screenshot above.

Ok, letâs start from the first step. When you typed
notepad %windir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts in the run command, were you not able to see the file named âhostsâ getting opened in notepad?

If not, then copy the hosts file from other computer to your targeted computer at the location %windir%\system32\drivers\etc

How do you get the task bar/start menu to stay when on google chrome?
Q. My taskbar is on auto-hide. Whenever on my desktop, it shows when i move the mouse to the bottom. But when i'm in google chrome, it won't show when i move to the bottom and it's really frustrating because i'm constantly switching between programs. How do I fix it w/o changing my taskbar to lock? I like it at auto-hide.

A. Are you using Microsoft Windows or Linux either a MAC? If you working on Windows this might be an issue with the system. Not with a Google Chrome whatsoever.

What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages to the computer buyer when using one of the free?
Q. operating systems such as google chrome and linux rather than windows?

A. i don't know about linux
but google chrome was designed to be fast
A great OS for something like net books that are only really good for watching videos and social networking
so it woulnd;t be able to do much in the way of gaming or high demand software

that was the last time i herd about google chrome a while ago it might be different now

How do I create a custom error page or action for firefox/iceweasel on an embedded linux device?

Is software I write for one Linux distribution compatible for all Linux distributions?
Q. I'm thinking about writing some stuff for an easy to get distro like Ubuntu, then trying it on an embedded Linux platform with an ARM processor.

Will I have issues porting it over?

I'm not a computer newb entirely, but I am a Linux newb for the most part.

A. Probably... Everything in linux is built from packets (As you probably know by now) - you want to make sure you know which packets you need... My APGUI project needs GTK, Python, Pygtk and APG before it will run...

If your app is entirely self-contained... Gratz, you are one of the only 5 people who write apps that way :)

How can I get an introduction as to how Linux is used in Embedded Applications?
Q. I wish to have a dive (not swim very deep though) into Embedded Linux.
Are there any good resources on the internet that you would like to recommend?
Please note that I know the C language inside out and have also done micro-controllers programming even though it was without any RTOS.

I hooked up a printer to it, and set it to share all printers, yet when I go onto my Windows computers, neither it, nor the printer attached to it, show up. What are the pros and cons of Ubuntu Linux versus Windows 7?
Q. Hello! I was wondering what are the positive attributes along with the negative of Ubuntu Linux, compared to the positive and negative attributes of Windows 7? If you could answer this question, I would highly appreciate it.

A. Overall a Linux based platform can perform most of the tasks equally as well as a proprietary platform using OSS. However Linux does have its limitations particularly in gaming. My advice is to set up a Dual Boot of Windows and Linux.

There are better distros. than Ubuntu available. I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint Debian Edition Its easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

Using command line only, how to I retrieve the exact number of frames in a given video in Linux?

Q. Using command line only, how to I retrieve the exact number of frames in a given video in Linux?

ffmpeg will return the duration in minutes and the framerate but duration*framerate does not give an exact number of frames.

I need to know the exact number of frames.

A. mplayer -identify -fps 1 VIDEOFILE

Then look at
ID_VIDEO_FPS=1.000
ID_VIDEO_ASPECT=0.0000
ID_AUDIO_FORMAT=80
ID_AUDIO_BITRATE=224000
ID_AUDIO_RATE=0
ID_AUDIO_NCH=0
ID_LENGTH=41819.00

Notice how the length, in seconds, is now the exact number of frames. (41819 frames)

If you need it to be interactive-less:
mplayer -msglevel all=0 -identify -fps 1 -vo null -frames 0 VIDEOFILE | grep ID_LENGTH

Or, for a program:
mplayer -identify -fps 1 -vo null -frames 0 -msglevel all=-1 VIDEO > moviedata

then to get the frame info:

grep ID_LENGTH moviedata

should do.

Thanks for that, now I know how to do it too!

A. LSF is not for beginners.
Read and follow the directions VERY carefully. Even a slight mistake will result in failure.
1. Read the manual
2. If you have a problem you can get specific help on the IRC or mailing list for LSF. Post exactly what you have done and the errors you get.

Q. So, I unzipped the files I downloaded from Ubuntu. Then I burned them on a blank DVD. Now, I'm trying to run it on my other computer, and it doesn't work. When I put the disk into my laptop, it asks me if I want to run the wubi install. I'm trying to install it right on my hard drive.

A. Oh boy here we go(this is gonna be long, but I love to send people away from Windows and into Linux).
OK SO, when your pc boots up hit ESC as soon as you see the computer manufacturers logo(Dell, HP, Compaq, Acer, whatever it is). Then depending on your computer you will want to look around for the "Boot Sequence" Once you find it, put your "Internal CD/DVD-ROM" device on the top. then, insert the dvd then reboot, you should automatically boot to the Ubuntu DVD.
Good luck

How to: Schedule my PC to shutdown at a certain time?

Q. Hey!
I just wanted to know how I could make like some sort of task where I could make my PC shutdown/hibernate at a certain hour. However I want it to do this only on certain days of the week. I hope you guys could help me and I'm even willing to install a program to make this possible!

Thanks in advance!

A. Use the "scheduled tasks" item in yoru control panel (Windows - assumed)
Basically, at the command line you would have
> at ( time)
+
> shutdown / (flags /t = time in seconds, mandatory.. other flags, see /?)

so to FORCE a shutdown and a RESTART (just for demo) in 90 seconds
one time, I would do - > shutdown /f /r /t 90

To schedule it for later on, ( /yes - force close if needed)
> AT 2200 /yes /every:Mon,Tue,Wed "shutdown /f /r /t 90"
... or something similar.. I haven't used this in a while, so it may need a tweak with spaces or flags.

It is probably easier - you just check the boxes(for days), fill in the time, and give the command in using the TASK SCHEDULER.

If you are using Mac or Linux (Mac since OSX is BSD Linux underneath).. the similar command would be setting a CRON job ( CRON is closest to AT)

In linux how do I set a time for my computer to shut down?
Q. Is there a way I can leave my computer on to download something but have it set so that it stops the download and shuts down at a certain time?
I'm using dream linux.

A. you can use the command "shutdown -P time". With this command, the computer will shutdown after the given time in minutes. For ex: "Shutdown -P 30" will turn off the computer after 30 minutes

Other possibilities are to use "at" or "cron",
"at" will automatically perform a given command at the given time only once (remember that: only once).
"cron" will repetitively perform the given command at every given time (for ex: every hour, every day or every month, etc...
For explication of "at" and "cron": you can see this page: http://www.linux.org/lessons/interm/c622.html

In your situation, Using "shutdown" is the best because your task isn't repetitive and "shutdown" is much more easier to use than "at" or "cron".

Can I delete a file I want to delete using Puppy Linux LIVE CD ?
Q. I've got vista installed and 3 files that are virus like and are hidden. I can see them when i boot my pc from live cd puppy linux When i double clicked those files and chose delete>quite they were gone. However when I tried to shutdown my pc it asked if i want to save it, i chose i dont because i used live cd , when i run vista again I saw those files i deleted are there again !

Any help?

A. Yes, you can, you need to clean the Trash before to reboot your machine. You can to delete files using the Terminal (or Console) too, with command line, enter in the windows vista installed disk with the Terminal and tip the full path to files you want to delete. But atention, take care with this, it is not possible to recover the files once deleted.

The comand line is:

rm -rf /path to virus file

If you have a doubt, send me a private message, ok?

How to write a UNIX shell utility to find a matching filename in the current directory?

Q. How do I do this?

Write a utility that acts as a front end to find, this utility takes the name of a file as its single parameter and displays the full pathname of every matching filename, searching downwards from the current directory.

It's supposed to be done in C-shell in UNIX. But I really have no idea how to do this. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

A. I think Unix (officially trademarked as UNIX, sometimes also written as Unix with small caps) is a computer operating system originally developed in 1969 by a group of AT&T employees at Bell Labs, including Ken Thompson, Dennis Ritchie, Brian Kernighan, Douglas McIlroy, and Joe Ossanna.

How to transfer folder from Mac to unix server?
Q. I am running OSX and using Terminal to ssh connect to a remote unix server. I need to transfer a folder containing files from my Mac to my account on the unix server. Should I sftp or stay in ssh? What commands do I use to transfer the folder? Any help would be appreciated.

A. You can use either sftp or scp.

sftp is an interactive session, similar to the following:

you@OSX $ sftp user@unix_server

sftp> cd <target_dir>

sftp> put <directory_to_be_copied_to_unix>

sftp> exit

Alternatively, you can use scp to copy the files from OSX to Unix server

you@OSX $ scp -rp <directory_to_be_copied> user@unix_server:/<destination_folder>

How do i send a file from unix to windows server using ftp or windoes ?
Q. How do i send a file from unix to windows server using ftp or windows ?

A. You provided very little information.

If you can FTP then I assume both computers have an internet connection.

Simply upload to the FTP site with Unix and download with Windows.

Did you know that Internet Explorer has a built-in FTP client?

It works just like an Explorer window. Just copy and paste or drag and drop.

If you don't have a good FTP location, you can transfer large files with YouSendIt.com.

OK?

are there any games that are easy to download and install to my linux netbook?

Q. i'm having a great deal of trouble trying to install any games to my asus linux netbook 900. i don't have windows and find it impossibly difficult and complicated to understand the installation procedure.

are there any sites that allow games to be downloaded/installed and played offline by simply opening and/or extracting the files. without having to also downloads endless programs or updates in order to just play the game?

please avoid using techno-speak when answering.

thank you

A. If you go to your main menu and look for an entry that says Add and Remove programs, you should use that to install games, or any other software that you want. It will automatically download what is needed, install it, and put an entry in you menu.
Good luck

How do i install things on linux?
Q. Sorry if this is confusing :l
Basically i have just bought a new acer aspire one linux netbook, i want to install ubuntu so i can install wine. I do not have a disc drive on my netbook so i would need to use a memory stick to transfer the files. But when i download absolutely anything Xarchiver opens the download and i have no idea what to do when it has opened. How do i install it?
Thanks,
(:

A. Well the Aspire One ships with a custom version of Linpus Lite Linux.
Here is a good review
http://www.linuxhaxor.net/2008/09/15/linpus-linux-lite-review/
The fact is that Linux is Linux and adding wine or any other program works basically the same regardless of the version.
You can visit the Linpus website http://www.linpus.com/
You can also check the manuals http://www.linpus.com/help.php
Changing to Ubuntu is ok, but I simply don't see the advantage.

Linux is not difficult, just different than what you may be used to using.
You should be able to directly download and install most items from the notebook itself off any web connection.
Here is step by step how to install wine or just about any other app!

xp / linux dual boot, why does windows change the clock to the wrong time?

Q. I have an Asus eee 900a running tiny xp on the ssd and crunchbang linux on the SD card. Sometimes when I boot into windows it changes the clock making it incorrect. I change it but it eventually changes itself back again. Why is it doing this?

A. The convention under windows is that the computer's real-time clock maintains local time. Under UNIX and Linux, the convention is that the real-time clock maintains Greenwich Mean Time. So when you switch back and forth, it's common that your clock is off by your offset from GMT under one of the OSes. The way you can avoid this problem is to tell your Linux system that you want the RTC to maintain local time rather than GMT, just like the Windows convention.

In your distro of Linux, you would edit /etc/rc.conf, and set

HARDWARECLOCK" = "localtime"

rather than

HARDWARECLOCK" = "UTC"

Your Linux system is probably using NTP to sync the time, so even though it is a few hours off right after you boot, it gets the correct time a little while later. However, it is always off when you boot.

Any good linux distro for an old Pentium III Computer?
Q. I have an old Pentium III computer with 128mb of RAM in it. What would be a good linux to put in it. I hate DSL and Puppy and I love a lot of ready to use programs. (Ubuntu Alternative maybe like CrunchBang Linux?)

A. I thoroughly recommend taking a look at Linux Mint 6 Felicia Fluxbox Community Edition http://www.linuxmint.com/rel_felicia_fluxbox_whatsnew.php

System Requirements

x86 processor
128 MB of system memory (RAM)
2 GB of disk space for installation

On crunchbang Linux everything is incredibly small and I can't see a thing. Is there any fix?
Q. I'm unable to do anything with my crunchbang. Please help.

A. Most solutions require that you are able to see a menu item or open a terminal and type a command since you cannot see ANYTHING the only solution is to reinstall it and be aware of any options for font size and video formats when you do.
Good luck

What flavor of Linux is best for setting up a file-server?
Q. My family is scattered throughout the country.

I'd like to set up a Linux file-server that all of us around the country can tap into with SSH and share files. What flavor works best for this ? Ubuntu ? Kubuntu ? CentOS ?
Edit:

Thanks guys. Someone recommended CentOS to me...I just wasn't sure why. Seems like anything out there will run Samba just fine. You guys rule.

A. I'd use CentOS, but if all you're doing is a file share behind a firewall, they'll all run Samba fine.

What are the differences between UNIX and Linux, and what about all those choices within Linux?

Q. What are the operational differences between Linux and UNIX? Why would a programmer choose one over the other? What about software selection and ease of programming (with already basic knowledge of programming, and wanting to dive in to open source)?

In terms of Linux, what makes things like Red Hat cost money and things like Ubuntu not? Is pay-for OS based on Linux better quality than freely distributed OS? What is the best choice for Linux-or-Unix OS for a budding programmer?

A. What is Linux
http://www.linux.org/info/

What is UNIX
http://www.unix.org/what_is_unix.html

Why Linux is Better
http://www.whylinuxisbetter.net/

Linux is open source therefore in most cases free of charge with the exception of enterprise releases such as SUSE Linux and Red Hat
http://www.novell.com/linux/
http://www.redhat.com/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_source_software

What is Ubuntu

Ubuntu is a community developed operating system that is perfect for laptops, desktops and servers. Whether you use it at home, at school or at work Ubuntu contains all the applications you'll ever need, from word processing and email applications, to web server software and programming tools.

Ubuntu is and always will be free of charge. You do not pay any licensing fees. You can download, use and share Ubuntu with your friends, family, school or business for absolutely nothing.

We issue a new desktop and server release every six months. That means you'll always have the latest and greatest applications that the open source world has to offer.

Ubuntu is designed with security in mind. You get free security updates for at least 18 months on the desktop and server. With the Long Term Support (LTS) version you get three years support on the desktop, and five years on the server. There is no extra fee for the LTS version, we make our very best work available to everyone on the same free terms. Upgrades to new versions of Ubuntu are and always will be free of charge.

Here are some options for installing or trying out Linux

Option One (Full installation)

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 8 Main Edition which is built upon Ubuntu 9.10 Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

Linux Mint 8 Helena User Guide
http://www.scribd.com/doc/23787138/Linux-Mint-8-Helena-User-Guide

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 8 then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD for installation

Linux Mint 8 can also be run direct from the LiveCD from Booting up without touching your Hard Drive

Option Two (Install Linux inside Windows)

Installing Ubuntu as a dual-boot with Windows without partitioning
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/wubi

You keep Windows as it is, Wubi only adds an extra option to boot into Ubuntu. Wubi does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application.

Wubi keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application.

Boot in to windows insert the Ubuntu 9.10 LiveCD and you will offered the option of installing inside windows which is where the Wubi installer comes in, you will be asked how many gigabytes you wish to allocate to Ubuntu (I recommend 8gb) then you set a password for your installation then click install and thats it.

Once Ubuntu is fully installed upon starting your PC you will be given a choice of which operating system you want to use Windows or Ubuntu

Ubuntu 9.10 Download

Linux Mint 7 has a similar feature called mint4win and the directions given above for Wubi can be followed (XP and Vista only)

Ubuntu 9.10 and Linux Mint 7 can also be run straight from the LiveCD without touching your Hard drive

At present I do not recommend Ubuntu 10.04/Linux Mint 9 owing to multiple stability issues

Option Three (LiveCD)

Here the possibilities are endless as you can try out as many different Linux distros. until you find the one thats right for you DISTROWATCH.COM gives full listings (second lists the major distributions)

How different is a Linux network compared to a Unix network?
Q. How different is a Linux network compared to a Unix network? I understand a Unix network has mainframes, etc.

What are the things a Unix network has but a Linux network does not have and can never have?

A. Uhm... nooo.... Unix networking has about zero to do with mainframes.

Actually, Unix networking and Linux networking are pretty darned close with little or no exceptions.

Where are you getting your information from? Where ever it is, its bad information. Don't go there any more.

Whats the difference between Linux and windows hosting? Do i need Linux on my system to linux host?
Q. Whats are the advantages and the disadvantages of Linux hosting? why is it cheaper ? If I make a website in Dreamweaver and Flash CS5, can I Linux host?
Do I need to be wary about something?

A. All websites today currently run on either a Windows web server or a Linux-based server. The vast majority of websites run on a Linux-based platform as Linux has a strong reputation for security and web server performance. With standard (static) HTML-based websites, the web hosting platform doesn't make much difference. When it does make a difference, however, is when the website uses a dynamic scripting technology such as ASP (A Microsoft based technology), or PHP / PERL (Linux based technologies). A Windows-based hosting solution will run a Microsoft Windows server with IIS (Internet Information Server), and is necessary to run an ASP / ASP.NET scripted website. A Linux-based platform is typically used for PHP, Perl, and most other types of websites. Basically, unless your website uses ASP (pages ending in the .asp extention), Windows hosting is not necessary.

As an experienced webmaster I recommend BH web hosting which Iâm sure it would work for you and fulfill all your requirements. They have a really great offer for hosting & I have used them for over 3 yrs now, and have never had a single problem with them.

You can reach reviews about this web hosting provider and its latest DISCOUNT COUPONS at:
